This is a poorly phrased question by the NY Times, considering that we recently completed an apparently well-supported Sunshine Double. The U.S. Open also continues to thrive. So they obviously haven't "all" gone away. More precise questions would be, "Can today's United States support any local and regional tennis tournaments? Is tennis purely an occasional mega-spectacle here, with no grassroots interest or financial foundation? Are smaller events, especially on the women's tour, unsustainable?"
