Where Is The Marketa Vondrousova Hype?

Usually when someone wins their first slam, they get hyped as the next big thing in tennis. Why is there no such hype for Marketa Vondrousova? She has been to an RG Final (at 19 years old), she won a silver medal in the Olympics on a hardcourt, and she won Wimbledon. She reached #1 in the world as a junior and won a main tour tournament at 17 years old. Marketa has been riddled with injuries throughout her career, but she has shown us she can do big things when she's healthy.

From an entertainment standpoint, I love watching her play. She has all the shots in the arsenal and plays with the kind of variety you don't see with someone like Sabalenka. Her drop shots and drop/lob combos are really fun to watch. I also enjoy seeing her defend. She chases down balls that I don't think she can get to and gets it back to other side with enough to make her opponent take it seriously. She's certainly not a boring player to watch.

But there is just no buzz for her, at all. She just won Wimbledon and ESPN is willing to talk about every player except her. Can we get the Vondrousova hype train going the same way the Rybakina hype train took off when she won Wimbledon?

I literally had no idea who she was when I saw her the last few days jn the tournament.

When you said she won Wimbledon I was like “nahhhhhh… as a Junior??”

And then I checked.

Holy Crap - the sister just won Wimbledon.

No one talks about her.

She’s not even ranked at the Open?

1) She's not from Western Europe / USA / Australia

2) She's not that good looking

3) Lots of 1 slam wonders in women's tennis recently who went on to not achieve much afterwards, so now when there's a new slam winner, people are more cautious. Totally different situation in the men's game, where if someone new finally breaks through all hell is raised, and for good reason.

4) Let's be real, not that many people care about women's tennis, way less than men's at least, therefore less noise

She's seeded 9th for the US Open but she was unseeded when she won Wimbledon, I believe.

Just like you said, people don't treat her like the Wimbledon champion. Who would even know? They don't talk about her.

To answer OP's question of where is the hype:

This forum hates women's tennis and a lot of it's users hate women and only care about their looks (take a look at this very thread).

It's not a comment on Vondrousova, just about how little this forum values women.

But Ons and Coco and Iga get hype.

They are not what would usually be considered beautiful either.

But we hear tons about them.
lol thats an understatement. also she wore nike at wimbledon now j lindeberg. obviously she must not be valuable enough to them either…..its funny how anyone says shes not good looking when you rattle off 3 top 10’s easily who are not considered classically beautiful. thats not the reason.
theres no hype bc every brand is preoccupied making their current players
marketable, and maybe the tattoos turned the brands off, or media? If they wanted to market her they could - i highly doubt iga is remarkably more interesting or Ons off the court…or any of them. but their brands (or their own personal brands) have been thrust upon us to create storylines.
iga - has a mental coach, is super serious and well trained, likes to read
ons - minister of happiness, plays slice and dice style
coco - the future, aggressive style, confident, etc etc shes done like 500 media pieces alone at the us open we all know her story…
espn/tc doesnt interview her often so we have no clue what shes like. to the point above, id love to know more about muchova. but they are busy asking pegula what its like to play doubles with coco for the 100th time.
i liken vondu to petra kivitova. i dont know alot abt her either yet im watching her for a decade. there’s no edge and nothing to create hype on. iga is as bland as they are but shes a repeat slam champion and no 1 - they almost have to hype her up. caro garcia? was awesome last yr…..zero mainstream media hype. no edginess, nothing to pander to the mainstream with.

this is just an example from a guy who follows mens tennis, and barely womens.

Well, more noise when Sabalenka is playing. Much more noise.

Vondy, can I call her that?, plays great, she hits the ball really hard a lot. The problem is she can have a day where she is missing a lot. And there can be long periods where she is missing a lot.

Same thing with Penko, Keys, Garcia... a lot of players.

Iga wins a lot because she controls her hard hitting more than others. Same thing with Ash Barty. And lately Sabalenka.

Wow! This is too much hate to digest in one only post.
I am so glad that I only hate pickleball.
And actually, it doesn't make any difference whether it's men's or women's pickleball.

Most guys on here love women actually...

I have been a bit disappointed in her post-U.S. open performance because she hasn't really been a contender in any of the tournaments she has played. She had a golden opportunity at Stuttgart, but lost to Kostyuk in the semis.

However, I'm encouraged by her overall GS results over the past year.

W: Titlist
USO: QF
AO: 1R
RG: QF (at least)

The only players who have made the QFs of 3 of the last 4 majors are Sabalenka, Gauff, and Vondrousova. Elite company! She also ranks 5th in the Live WTA rankings.

Way to go Marketa!!!
