Where tennis string is made?

There is a guy that strings rackets in our town in a second hand sports store. He uses only Klipper strings and claims that all string is generally the same (all multis, all polys, all synthetics, etc.) because it is made in one of only two string factories in the world. He says that all other expensive strings are just a marketing ploy. :-?

This sounded utterly ridiculous to me. Anybody have input on the subject? Maybe where each string company manufactures their product? Thanks!

Well we know...........

Well we know that Babolat makes strings...................
we know that Tecnifibre makes strings...................
we know that Gamma makes strings...................
and I believe there is a string manufacturer in Germany and in China, so that is five to begin with, and there's probably more.

Additionally, we know that the basic materials are the same with the varoius types of string, however the composition and manufacturing processes vary a great deal.

Cheers, TennezSport

Even if it's fabricated in the same factory (which it isn't) it would still have different compositions.

Most racquets come from the same factories, but you've never heard someone saying they're all the same, right?

Gamma's strings are rebranded Toa among others. (See http://www.toalson.co.jp/ENGLISH/index.html ) Gamma does NOT produce their own strings. There are multiple string factories in Taiwan, Japan, China and Germany. Very few string brands have their own manufacturing facilities including Tecnifiber. While several brand of string may come from the same factory, many have specs unique to their individual brand.

A guy I used to know was an importer of two tennis string brands. He also said that most brands were made in one or two factories and had different pigmentation and a different label slapped on them. It simply makes no economic sense to have 30 companies doing their own manufacturing of such a specialized (i.e. relatively low total revenue) product.

I'm sure technifibre has their own factory. I really don't think X-One Biphase is just a pigmented copy... Anther example is Wilson NXT/Max, that couldn't possibly be a pigmented copy of any other string. Prince Lightning is significantly different from other strings as well. The list can go on and on...

"I'm sure technifibre has their own factory." Yes they do and you can take a virtual tour - TW has a video posted on this site. And yes Tecnifibre does make Wilson's high end multifilament string.

Prince Lightning is made by TOA, Prince is a marketing company just like Gamma and outsources all string manufacturing.

As far as I know the two biggest OEM manufacturers of string are Taolson and Gosen. Started in the mid fifties GOSEN-Toalson split in the late sixties into two seperate companies Gosen and Toalson. If you're interested there's a detailed history of the company at the Gosen main website.
