Where to Play in Beijing, China

It'll be rough to find courts. I've been to Beijing multiple, multiple times. Last year, I spent two weeks in the city, and have spent at least two months (cumulative). To tell you the truth, people in China don't give a crap about tennis. It's a ridiculously crowded city, and there's just no space for courts.

I can safely say that it will be almost impossible for you to find a free, public court that's playable. With luck, you will find public courts that you will be able to reserve for a fee, though I'm not sure how much you'll have to pay. I've never really heard of indoor courts.

You will also encounter many problems. Can you speak Chinese? If not, there will be problems with paying for the courts. Not to be racist, but Chinese tennis players generally do not have very good etiquette.

Something you can try to do is to find a local university or college to play at. That, in my opinion, was the best way to play tennis. The courts were in great shape, maintained by the college, the people that played there generally consisted of many teaching pros and college players, and it was part of this whole recreational center that the college had. It was secluded from the busy city, and had some breathing space. To tell you the truth, it was a really enjoyable experience.

Stores won't be that hard to find, but they will be overpriced and won't have a very wide selection.

Oh yeah, I've seen the rural parts of China. Having parents that grew up and went to school in China in farming towns, I've seen the poor areas of China. I can reassure you, Beijing is nothing like that. The buildings there are just as safe as in any other city. China's rural parts, like Sichuan, has the engineering of a 3rd world country. Beijing is totally different.

When exactly are you going to be in Beijing? Im supposed to be there the first week of July if that is the case Ill post in this thread and let you know, maybe we could meet and play some tennis. If you find a tennis court of course.

In another note, 3rd world country have good engineering, the problem is that there are some places that do not pay atention to it and there isnt somebody to inforce the required safety measurements.

Prodigy, Great idea! I don't know exactly where my apartment will be yet but ill be willing to travel 30 minutes just to play tennis. Price won't be an issue unless its ridiculously expensive. Things in China are cheaper right? Hopefully it wont be more than 10 dollars an hour, I can live with that. Do you have any idea how much it costs? On average? And also to buy string and string labor.

Jmverdungo, sounds great! Ill be there first week of July also. Ill post and tell you where ill be living as soon as i get hte info.

Tennis in China is actually more expensive than America. They have courts in 5 stars hotels and high-end apartments. Public courts maybe two or three in the entire city, about $10 hr at night. Good luck. Mostly 2hbh by the way.

Ah as long as its not too expensive I'll play. 10 bucks a night is a good deal. I hope I'll be able to find decent competition though. Maybe I'll look at the college team. Anyone else played in china before

Watching as the stringer strings your racket will ensure that he/she doesn't screw around and take any shortcuts that would compromise quality.
