Where would a Holger Rune victory rank in terms of historic upsets?

Huge. First timer in main draw defeats man on quest for ultimate GOAT status.

I think the effect is a little dulled because Rune is a touted prospect. A huge upset to be certain but not as big as if it was a washout or an unknown.

Biggest upset in sports history. Yeah sure call that an exaggeration but unless Novak has a serious nagging injury there is zero chance this should be a possibility of happening.

The Doohan-Becker upset is my #1 pick as of now and it's high up there in sports overall, considering Becker would make 4 consecutive finals after that. But 1987 saw Becker struggle with some mental lapses like choking a 2-0 lead to Gilbert at the USO and RR exit at the WTF, as well Doohan had his best performance on Australian grass earlier in the year. So all of that puts Rune as a weaker underdog as well with Novak far stronger mentally than 19 year old Becker.

Söderling-Nadal, Istomin-Djokovic both up there as well.

It would depend. Does Novak look injured and just out of match practice? If the kid just got lucky it doesn’t mean much. I mean obviously he would have to be somewhat for him to lose like that.

If the win was actually against a B or even C version of Nole (I’m not sure Novak has his A game nowadays anyway) that would make it much more historic to me. But that would be one in a million for the kid to summon that level from almost nowhere.

I probably have as good or better chance of winning the lottery. And I don’t buy lottery tickets :P

Sure, he's touted, but just like Fed beating Sampras was a big deal or Safin beating Sampras, it would also be a big deal if Rune beat Djokovic. But I don't think it's going to happen.

It would be the biggest upset in tennis history.
It would be beyond that. It would be the biggest UPSET EVER!
Every since HomoSapiens inhabited this planet, there would NEVER have been an upset of this magnitude.
The earth will tremble, the Sun will shine brightly and the multiverse will cease to exist.

TLDR: It ain't happening, bro.

No. Common now. Soderling upset is big but given his form even before and certainly after he's nowhere near Doohan type upsets. The Istomin victory is a case of declined void which was extremely evident for Novak in 2017 his worst season by a country mile since entering Top 10. It would be like ranking the Stakhovsky and Dustin Brown upsets in the same manner.

At the beginning of 2017 there was no real evidence Djokovic has declined massively - sure he had a subpar 2nd half of 2016 but he was still #2, defending champ, and the overwhelming favorite to win the title.

I was wondering why OP didn't wait til after the match to start this thread. Obvious answer: he knew after the match he would have to change the subject tittle.

We would only be able to judge the upset 10 years from now. If the dude goes on to win 25 slams, no it won't be an upset. If the dude becomes the next Auger Aliassime and can't even win a 250 title, then yes it will be a huge upset.

The greatest upset of all time!!!!! (: Please let it happen!!!!!!!! (I dreamed that it did a week ago!)

I just made a thread. There's no ulterior motive. Try not to hurt your brain with those powerful theories.

Dude I get it, still not Doohan-Becker. Novak would lose early at 2018 AO as well.

THIS.

Did Djoker donate a game to that kid out of pity?
Tuned in at 3-0 and the kid could not move at all. Match was 100% headed for a bagel.
Somehow it ended up 6-1. Can't figure out how he lost a game.

he gave him the game at Love

Rune will likely win Slams. He is not a fluke. Junior World Champion.
I am not doubting Rune potential, I was talking about special scenario where Rune wins is open after beating Novak in first round, something like what if series done by Marvel
