Where would you rank Djokovics 2023 season among the best seasons in his career?

Hyde

Semi-Pro
- He won 3 slams and reached the final in another one, which he lost in 5 sets
- He has the chance to win the ATP finals tommorrow
- He participated in 4 Masters this season, winning 2 of them
- He participated in 11 tournaments this season, winning 7 of them (he can go 8 of 12 if he wins tomorrow)
- He has a 91% match-winning percentage this season

3rd best after 15th and 11th! The only less than 3-slams season, that can even remotely compete is 2016, where he won 4 masters to 2 of this season (But that's naturally what happens, when dominating player participates in more of them, so i dunno how much of that is an advantage really, when we are comparing with season, when he plays less than half of them...) and not a single one slam season can or should ever be in any contention with 3-slam seasons under any circumstance!...And 2021 one loses out by virtue of Novak choking in the semis to Zverev in ATP Finals and losing important matches in Olympics and USO final! On top of that it is also weaker due to Novak winning 1 less masters title and one less title in general compared to 2023! Istated my reasons! 2023 is his 3rd best season period! But all of that will be polemics anyway if Novak manages to win the title tomorrow, because then it will be out of any questions! (90+ win percentage maintained, unless he loses his singles rubbers in Davis cups, which i don't think he will...on top of that 7 titles, 6 of which are big ones...it will be plain obvious!)

I agree. And I feel he is more "watchable" than ever. 2011 and 2015 was more of a fighter, but this time it's a tennis "player" in the literal sense of the word. He mixes his game more than ever (like S&V against Medvedev, extremely aggressive shotmaking when he needs to, and still also having his basic skills).

However, I still think he's somewhat angry at himself for not just running away with the Wimbledon title and possible CYGS after he seemingly had everything under control in that final. It was one of the very few really bad matches he had in a long while (bad serving, too many errors), and now in retrospective it was more his loss than Alcaraz' win. Anyway, maybe another try next year (plus the Olympics).

2015 is just so obscene a Calendar Slam would by no means automatically supersede it.

I also think with 2011 you have too many quality wins that year and his only flubs were losing to Federer at the French and being too tired/injured at the WTF (I mean losing to Tipsarevic?) however if he ends the year at what 92% win rate you might have to argue it above 2011 or level.

At least worse than 2011 and 2015 even for achievements but it's 3rd if YEC is won based on achievements.

Level of play is subjective but again I would say at least worse than 2011 and 2015.

More like "at most" ...i would like to hear arguments from you in favour of any other season other than those two, so come on entertain me i dare you! LOL Those potential arguments will especially sound silly if Novak beats Sinner tomorrow! LOL

He is 36, so this year could be the biggest one, if he can win Finals, then it is this year:

he got to 40 M1000
400 weeks
24 GS
he has turned around h2h against both Carlos and Rune
what else?

Some will say he is playing the best tennis of his life.
His serve at A0 2023 and tonight was best ever I have seen?

Comparing is difficult, but taking his age into account = greatest year ever depending on tomorrow?

Result-wise:

1. 2015 (Grand slams - 3 titles, 1 final; Masters 1000 - 6 titles, 2 finals; WTF - title);
2. 2011 (Grand slams - 3 titles, 1 SF; Masters 1000 - 5 titles, 1 final);
3. 2023 (Grand slams - 3 titles, 1 final; Masters 1000 - 2 titles; WTF - title/final);
4. 2021 (Grand slams - 3 titles, 1 final; Masters 1000 - 1 title, 1 final).

Performance-wise (subjective):

1. 2011;
2. 2023;
3. 2015;
4. 2021.

It's very difficult to say which one of these four 3 slam years is the best and the worst, as he was very successful and played great tennis each year. 2011 was just epic and it has to be the best, he was destroying everyone, especially Nadal in finals and on clay. In 2015 he dominated the whole tour for the whole year. 2021 was the closest as it can get to CYGS and had he win US Open just because of that it would be his greatest season, while this year it feels he plays like he's tennis-born again, in the best years, while he is actually 36 years old. Also competition in 2023 feels stronger than the one in 2015 and especially in 2021. Again, 2011 in one of the most dominant tennis season ever produced by a player, while the 2015 is probably the most successful one.

If we are going solely by achievements, then yes, I can see how 2023 could be ranked as his third best (after 2011/15). However, back in 2012/13/14 and arguably even 2008, he could have had equally as good, if not better seasons, had it not been for the fierce competition from Nadal, Federer, Murray, Wawa. Seems like he’s now having a walk in the park compared to those years.

Result wise

1 2015
2 2011
3 2021
4 2023

Performance wise

1 2011
2 2015
3 2021
4 2023

In what exact way 2021 is a better season results wise than 2023?! LOL Please enlighten me, cuz i don't see any reasons for 2021 to be...more masters won, more titles overall won, final of the ATP finals reached in 2023...i fail to see where 2021 wins anything over 2023? So what the heck?!...which "results" are you even talking about? additionally he also skipped several big tournaments (especially masters) in 2021, just like he did in 2023, so??...additionally he had 55-7 record by the end of 2021, which is not that different from his current 54-6 record, which in worst case now can convert into 54-7, which percentage wise will only make 2021 better season by hair, because of one extra match win, which Novak will likely fix anyway during his campaign in Davis Cup (wins from which count towards player's singles statistics...), so if it's not titles in general, masters titles, grand slam titles, finals reached in elite events and not even W/L percentage rate, what else then, which statistically makes 2021 better? LOL

Being well into his 37th year should count for something towards greatness? IMO, he is a more complete player now, than in 11 and probably 15. What he lacks now, to some extent, is speed and stamina, which naturally comes with age.

2021 a little more atp points (even if Nole wins YEC tomorrow), beat Rafa at RG and won RG.

This is just a situational stat, depending on circumstance, how can can something like this beat better percentage (potentially), more titles (already a fact), more masters titles and thus elite titles in a season and being finalist of ATP finals as opposed to semi-finalist??...so because of more ATP points it is suddenly better than his 2021?! What in the actual heck man?!...And Alcaraz this year was 1st level difficulty player at RG anyway this year, it wouldn't be Nadal even if he did play (In previous seasons maybe he would have, but this year the circumstances made Alcaraz 1st favourite to win RG title...), just because his 2nd name isn't Nadal doesn't mean the win for Novak was any less big than against Nadal back in 2021 semis! Novak beat the best player tournament had to offer this year in the semis fair and square! Yes, crumps helped a little, just as Nadal's "injury" back in 2021 i'm sure :sneaky: Look, none of these additional points i made make my argument more compelling than Novak winning more titles, more masters and reaching more finals at elite events, end of story!...

Everything close enough, and ATP points is the only thing deciding ranking tbh.
Then beating Fed/Rafa at their pet surface and won slam there is the biggest.
But I am cool with other Nole fans rank 2023 higher than 2021.

Winning the season with additional elite level title is tie-breaker much bigger and much more important than any other you can possibly think of, when Novak's grand slam results match that other season pound for pound (same number of matches won, same 3 slam wins out of 4 and the final in 4th situation...same everything, except for 2 masters vs. 1, 6 titles vs. 5, ATP finals runner-up (potentially winner) vs. semi-finalist...) it's the only things that truly matter...

Dare I say without the help of the British crowd, he would be holding all four slams right now. He steamrolled Alcaraz in the first of Wimbledon and then the crowd / chair umpire inserted themselves into the match at the end of the second. The time violation at a critical point...and the resulting crowd fury clearly got Novak's focus blurry. Instead of going up two sets to love...he didnt regain his focus until he was down two sets to one. Kudos to Carlos for taking advantage...but 2023 was a great year for my boy. As good as any I can remember....at the ripe old age of 36.

Doubt that, USO will be a draw from hell to ruin it.

Now on THAT we can agree! And i'd rather have an extra USO title, than extra Wimbledon title if i had to choose only one between the two and i would also choose early Wimbledon heartbreak, than suffer another USO heartbreak, that might as well turn Djokovic into laughing stock were it to happen that way (Every Novak hater would be talking non-stop now how he failed to capture CYGS on the last leg of it not once, but twice now! But now instead it's just a regular failure at the Wimbledon...)...at least by losing his CYGS a little earlier he dropped an unnecessary pressure of his back, in Novak's own words - "Monkey off his back"...

If he wins tomorrow third, if he loses fourth.

It's already his 3rd best lose or win today...what could potentially be his 3rd best if not 2023?? LOL He has won 6 titles overall, which is one more than in 2021 and an extra masters title in particular, which is one more than in 2021, he reached YEC final this time around, instead of losing in the semis like he did in 2021, he has now the record of 54-6 (90%) compared to 55-7 of 2021 (89%) and even if he loses today and it drops, Novak will play Davis Cup and will likely win at least one more singles match to make it dead even with 2021 season at 55-7 matches record and if Serbia advances beyond QF he can wi neven more singles matches to make the record for 2023 better than 2021 anyway...if that's not 2021, which is in your eyes 3rd best, which one it is then? LOL 2016??...two slam season, where he mentally and physically collapsed after winning RG??...give me a break!...

Definitely the best of his post 2018 comeback era, beating 2021 because of the extra big titles won and the overall dominance bar that stretch of losses on clay. 2015 and 2011 obviously are ahead of this, so I would probably put this as his 3rd greatest season ever.

I'd say it's the best of his renaissance era (2018 to now).

The second half of 2018 was better than any equivalent period in 2023 but we have to remember that he was garbage the first half of the year so it's tough to put that over.

The competition was more impressive in 2021 but Djokovic had a few wobbles in his big victories, and of course the ATP Finals snuck away from him then (though could Zverev have beaten this Djokovic? Probably not but I can't say for sure).

I wouldn't put it over his 2011-2016 years though.

This percentage doesn't account for any of the Turin matches, though...it dropped to 89.8% as soon as Djoko lost to Sinner, but now Novak gained it back by winning all 3 remaining matches, so now it's slightly over 90%, more specifically 90.1% almost rounded up to 90.2%...

This year definitively beats 2021.

59-6 with 90.7%
3 Slams
WTF
1 Slam Final
2 Masters
3 of 6 losses were non-factor (RR and low tier)

Banned from 2 Masters he had a high win percentage isn't fair so overall I really don't see 21 being argued here.
