Which athletes are overrated in your opinions?

clout

Hall of Fame
I'll name a few for starters:

Kobe Bryant - I honestly have no idea why this dude is in the GOAT debate. He's won just 1 MVP in 20 seasons and placed in the top 2 only one other time besides the time he won. He wasn't even the best player on his team for half his career and his efficiency numbers and advanced stats are among the lowest compared to other players who are also mentioned among the top 10-15 all time. People say he's clutch but the stats show otherwise as Kobe's numbers actually dip during the finals and elimination games. “Best player since Jordan” when in reality he was never the undisputed best player in the world for even one season of his career. The fact that some ppl say he's the 1b to Jordan or is better than LeBron is laughable.

Bryce Harper - The media seems to view him like he's the second coming of Babe Ruth and he's always gotten more coverage than other players who are clearly better at baseball. He strikes out like every other AB, his averages/slashes are very mediocre and Philly played themselves giving Bryce this albatross contract for what 13 years (!!!!).

Phil Mickelson - It blows my mind that some ppl consider him Tiger's "rival." In tennis terms, Murray would probably have a much better claim of being part of the big four than Mickelson does at being Woods' rival imo. Dude's been the "best-man" his whole career, yet I’ve seen him ranked as a top 10 golfer of all time which is completely ludicrous and bottom line, if we're going peak for peak, they're at least 4-5 golfers right now that I'd choose over Phil.

Vince Carter - Sure he had awesome dunks in his hey-day but his career as a whole isn't nearly as glamourous as a lot of ppl think it is and overall, he's underachieved given his potential when he first broke through into the league.

The entire nextgen - we all know the story here ;)

Remember "overrated" doesn't mean "bad." Discuss (y)

I don't know about overrated. But you know who was underrated? Larry Bird. Even though people recognize him as an all time great, I still think he is underrated. The guy probably had a bigger killer instinct than Kobe.

Kobe and Harper were the first two to come to my mind when I saw the thread title lol.

Derek Jeter - below average defensive shortstop, gifted gold gloves that should’ve been Vizquel’s, and undeservingly propped up as one of the GOATs only because he was a Yankee for life. Arod and Chipper were both better players and don’t anywhere near the love Jeter gets. His best single season WAR is 7.4, he never had a dominant year just very consistent. He deserves to be in the hall of fame (3000 hits, 48th career WAR, great postseason player, clutch) but he’s not the second coming of Babe Ruth

Anderson Silva - weak era champ. Tell me how his resume is better than Fedor’s, Jones’, Cormier’s, GSP’s, and Mighty Mouse’s? Stop calling him the GOAT. His best wins are beating up a math teacher twice.

Russell Westbrook - low iq statpadder. Took the media and everyone else 3 years to figure that out. His triple doubles are a joke and he should give his fraud mvp back so Harden can rightfully have it.

Aaron Rodgers - McCarthy’s archaic offense and Thompson’s awful front office moves didn’t help but Rodgers hasn’t gotten any criticism for the Packer’s failures over the past decade. 2014 twice he had the ball inside the 10 against Seattle, both times he failed to score and had to settle for field goals. Scoring one td would have won them the game. Last year was an embarrassment. I’ve never seen a so called all time great give up on a season so early in the year. He takes way too many sacks to statpad his meaningless completion % and refuses to take risks so he can have a great td/int ration. He’s a crybaby, sensitive jerk that can’t take a joke (i.e. other nfc north qbs do the beer chug “well I guess they finally found something that they can beat me at”) and a loser with no heart.

Giannis the dear. He is a beast, but with such a mediocre shoot, he cannot be considered the mvp of the NBA. Oh, I forgot, the regural NBA season is a circus, no defence at all, just run and dunk pal!

criticizing one player for a football team's failings is absurd, might as well say Barry Sanders was a garbage running back because his team never went anywhere. The Packers have surrounded Aaron with some pretty mediocre teams over the years.

Pretty boy Ronaldo [7], while @Ronaldo El fenómeno [9] is the real thing.

Yea Jeter and Westbrook are also massively overrated. Some ppl say Jeter should be a unanimous hall of famed which is beyond laughable considering he wasn’t even the best SS on his team from 2004 onwards. The Westbrook > Curry crowd is also delusional

You know, I was kind of overrated as an athlete. I'd like to say myself.

The late Bill Buckner is quite underrated as a baseball player. The majority of the public only know him for being the guy that had the ball roll under his legs which cost the Red Sox the '86 WS but in reality the dude was a VERY good player and it's a shame one play defined his whole career.

NFL players in general! Only play 16 minutes a game and some make $2 million a game, not including playoff salaries, endorsements and other income. Yes they get hurt and career is short but still lots of money for the time in the game playing. Most of the time in the game is spend on officiating the game, time outs, half time, etc...
