I've narrowed down my choices, and i'd like to know everyone's opinion on these strings. which of these strings is your favorite? i'm looking for lots of spin and very little tension loss mainly. i'm switching from babolat pro hurricane tour 16, which i liked, but i want a string that will help me out a little more with spin and control

signum pro poly-plasma 17
topspin cyber flash 17
kirschbaum super smash 17
luxilon big banger ace 18

Personally, I like BB ALU Power, my brother likes his Pro Hurricane Tour 17 while my friend loves his Pro Hurricane Tour 16's... he's been going through a lot of polys lately and that seems to be his fav for durability and ball grip.

Hi,

I am not sure I am "everyone" but here goes. They are all better than the hurricane 16 IMHO.

You have them listed in then order I would. Maybe a close race between SPPP and TP CF.

Steve

Ace 18 is nice for spin with very good feel for a poly (not too boardy). I found the kirschbaum to be a stiff string so you have to string lower. Personally, I like ALU Power and Timo 18.

I'd say the BB Ace 18 wins in the spin department; however, Signum and Cyberflash hold tension better than the rest from that list. The Kirschbaum loses tension the quickest.

This is just my opinion: I love SuperSmash even though it loses tension fast. But, that's just me. I just tend to like stiff, old, early-generation poly strings on flexible frames strung at low tensions.

Kirschbaum super smash. Try a set and string it about 5-10 lbs lighter than your PSGD. It is cheap and a great string. I liked it much better than the luxilon stuff.

I like the ALU 16L over the ALU 16L Rough. I think it slides more easily over the crosses than the rough and this gives me nice spin.

I'm in the same boat. Currently, I like TP CF 17 a little better than SPPP. Buy a reel, it's cheap.

Luxilon is the only one that I haven't tried so I'll comment on the other three:

SPPP
  • definitely the softest of the bunch
  • great feel
  • excellent tension maintainance

Cyber Flash
  • another soft poly like SPPP
  • feels harsher than what others claim, at least for me
  • tension maintainance is at par with SPPP
  • inexpensive; less than $70 for a 722'-reel

Super Smash
  • stiffest string of the bunch
  • firmest stringbed of the three
  • its feel rivals that of SPPP, maybe even better
  • not recommended for players with less developed mechanics
  • relatively inexpensive
  • loses tension quickly but doesn't go any lower

Personally, SPPP and SS are in a tie so either one should give you good results.

Hey CourtJester, do you know by any chance if SuperSmash and Babolat Ballistic Polymono play similar?

I've already played with SuperSmash 1.275mm and loved it at low tension. But, Ballistic is cheaper, so I'd like to try it IF it has similar playing characteristics.

E) None of the above.

Try Pro Supex Big Ace. Awesome string. Better than Cyberflash imo. Softer, more control, and pocketing instead of the trampoline feel of Cyberflash.

Unfortunately, I haven't tried that Babolat string. I got so many strings to try that I might not have time to do every one out there. Plus I usually try strings not made by those big racquet companies like Head, Babolat and Wilson since many people are already using them. But I'll keep an eye out for this one. Price looks nice, as you mentioned.

I would go with the luxilon BB. It's a popular choice with a lot of players and the 18 gauge will help a lot with spin.

SPPP: didn't stand out for me, didn't really like it.
Cyber: Has some pop on the serve, but everything else was meh
Kirschbaum: never tried.
Ace: Good spin, but no feel

BigGriff,

I know you just moved from the i.Radical O/S... would you please post your set-ups form those frames. I am experimenting with that frame at the moment and would love your input. String, lead tape (location)...

Thanks
Steve

tried the Kirschbaum's Spiky and Smash both at 17g@ 61 and 62lbs..

stiff like a board and not much feel.. slippery as hell. wouldn't be buyng this one again.

^^For an oversize, maybe that's a good tension, but for a mid or a midplus, might be a little tight and contribute to the stiffness. What racket?

Luxilon Ace 18 was the exact opposite for me. I strung a few racquets at 54lbs with Gosen OG Micro 17 crosses and they felt slippery for the first set or two.

Took the tension up to 58 lbs and they felt great. Seemed to have a bit more pop on the serve than ALU Power, but that may have been the tension (I was stringing ALU power at 54 lbs as well).

This was on an M-Fil 300 w/ 3g at 3 and 9.
