Federer up 4-1 in the 2nd set, and have lost a total of 4 points on serve. How is Mahut playing?![]()
But Federer looked so off in practice while Roddick looked like a true number 1on practice courts. Also according to great tennis experts on this forum Federer can't beat serve and volleyers, only baseliners.
He isn't getting enough first serves in and he is barely getting his racket on Fed's serves.
Which Roddick practice did you watch? He looked pretty crappy the other day when he was getting all cranky because of the wind.

61% first serves is a pretty good stat. The only problem is that Federer is one of the best (if not the best) returner of first serves in the game.
Federer just won 6:1 6:1.
Federer equals drama queen. All that about his mono but has shown no signs of it affecting his game.

He had mono before the AO, he has apparently since recovered. Why should it still be affecting his play?
Fed's game works best at night. Ball stays lower and the conditions are nicer. Pretty much Nadal and Federer like the opposite conditions and surfaces except they both like grass.Maybe he has to wait until he plays at night, does this sound familiar? :?
I didn't watch either of them practice. My comment was about thread someone made a few days ago stating that Federer looked horrible in practice.
He is talking about a thread late last week about how great Roddick looked, and ruffled Roger looked.

I saw the draw and thought, Oh flux! Another very tough draw for Gasquet having to play Soderling in his first match. Soderling just beat Gasquet in three sets in the early going at Dubai. So I was surprised to see Gasquet with an easy win over Soderling. Only explanation is that the courts must be very slow indeed, becasue I figured Dubai courts were medium slow, since Nadal was the defending champion there.
Robin Soderling is an easy top-20 player, but his ranking is down because he is coming off an injury that cost him much of last season. Indoors and on faster hardcourts Soderling is top ten easy! Great serve, big groundies and really hammers his volleys away at net. Gasquet was lucky to upset Soderling (who had also won the tournament a year or so before) at the Lyon Indoor two years ago when Gasquet went on and won the tournament. But Soderling has always been a tough match for Gasquet. Soderling should have beaten Nadal at Wimbledon last year -- and very nearly did!
Gasquet should make it to the quarters after getting by Soderling, and if Tsonga takes down Nadal, Gasquet could make the semis, since he has a winning record against Tsonga and should beat him on a slower surface like this. Either way, Gasquet should pick up points here since he lost to Roddick in the third round last year.

I don't know, I think he might like the faster courts better. He has won the USO the last four years running and has performed well at the MC too. Over the past several years, the two GS he has lost outside of RG were at the AO, both on slower hardcourts.

yeah, he is probably medium speed player. i just think he is more vulnerable at very fast hard courts and carpets in indoor seasons. But it's not easy to tell because indoor seasons are now less relevant. But you know, sometimes it makes me wonder why it took many years for Federer to finally win the indoor carpet title at his home town Basel.
As AO director said this year, AO is now 2nd fast courts behind US Open. And traditionally AO is a high bouncing courts. I think it's AO high bounces makes Federer commit more mistake in backhands, for example. US Open is now considered quickest but they also slowed down the courts reportedly compared to 90's.
I think Federer love medium-slow speed courts that doesn't bounce too high, which is now the status of Wimbledon courts.
He does well on medium-slow speed courts too, but you can't say he doesn't like fast courts just because he played poorly in Basel. His first title was an indoor tournament.
Argh! Ancic plays poorly, gets broken and allows Ferrero back in the set.
Baby Goran rolls and makes a Becker dive. Nice point. Come on Ancic!
