But Federer looked so off in practice while Roddick looked like a true number 1on practice courts. Also according to great tennis experts on this forum Federer can't beat serve and volleyers, only baseliners.

Which Roddick practice did you watch? He looked pretty crappy the other day when he was getting all cranky because of the wind.

He isn't getting enough first serves in and he is barely getting his racket on Fed's serves.

61% first serves is a pretty good stat. The only problem is that Federer is one of the best (if not the best) returner of first serves in the game.

Federer just won 6:1 6:1.

I get the feeling Federer is playing well, he just won 6-1, 6-1, having lost a total of 25 points and only 4 on serve. I think he's going to win this one.

I didn't watch either of them practice. My comment was about thread someone made a few days ago stating that Federer looked horrible in practice.

I didn't realize he made so many first serves in.Nevermind,I'm glad Federer is playing amazing again. This was his best match of the year by far,I hope he takes IW.

He had mono before the AO, he has apparently since recovered. Why should it still be affecting his play?

Aftereffects would still be felt in terms of lack of match fitness... but in interviews at IW, Roger has stated he is feeling good specifically that there are no more aches and pains and no breathlessness after playing.

I saw the draw and thought, Oh flux! Another very tough draw for Gasquet having to play Soderling in his first match. Soderling just beat Gasquet in three sets in the early going at Dubai. So I was surprised to see Gasquet with an easy win over Soderling. Only explanation is that the courts must be very slow indeed, becasue I figured Dubai courts were medium slow, since Nadal was the defending champion there.

Robin Soderling is an easy top-20 player, but his ranking is down because he is coming off an injury that cost him much of last season. Indoors and on faster hardcourts Soderling is top ten easy! Great serve, big groundies and really hammers his volleys away at net. Gasquet was lucky to upset Soderling (who had also won the tournament a year or so before) at the Lyon Indoor two years ago when Gasquet went on and won the tournament. But Soderling has always been a tough match for Gasquet. Soderling should have beaten Nadal at Wimbledon last year -- and very nearly did!

Gasquet should make it to the quarters after getting by Soderling, and if Tsonga takes down Nadal, Gasquet could make the semis, since he has a winning record against Tsonga and should beat him on a slower surface like this. Either way, Gasquet should pick up points here since he lost to Roddick in the third round last year.

Dubai courts medium slow just because Nadal won there? That´s not a good reasoning. Dubai is about the fastest hardcourt you can see these days.
By the way, why should Soderling have beaten Nadal in Wimbledon? Nadal had match point to win in straight sets and missed a crosscourt forehand by one inch so he was much closer to win in straight sets than Soderling was to win the match. Should Roddick have beaten Gasquet too since he was 2 sets up?
And how is Soderling easy a top 20 player if he has never been in the top 20?

Fed's game works best at night. Ball stays lower and the conditions are nicer. Pretty much Nadal and Federer like the opposite conditions and surfaces except they both like grass.

I actually think Federer likes medium fast to slow hard courts. Wimbledon grass courts are now not exactly the fastest courts. He likes lower bounces but not necessarily quick courts, I think.

In the grand scheme of thing, speed differences in current tour is relatively less of factor compared to past.
All surface speeds are converging to middle and all top players are doing much better on all surfaces compared to past.

I don't know, I think he might like the faster courts better. He has won the USO the last four years running and has performed well at the MC too. Over the past several years, the two GS he has lost outside of RG were at the AO, both on slower hardcourts.

You shouldn't waste you time arguing with fastdunn,he'll try to convince that Federer is a claycourter and that he doesn't have the game for faster surfaces. He is basically a Sampras butt-kisser and doesn't like the fact that Federer is so close to breaking his boy's record so he'll try to discredit Fed and present him like some one-dimensional claycourter.

I'm a Sampras fan, but I don't get why anyone who puts much stock in his record # of GS would want to classify Federer as a claycourter.

If Fed wins RG then Pete's record won't prevent people from definitively calling Federer a much greater player. Some already do because he has reached 2 finals there.

Fed has certainly proven he can play on slow courts, but he can hardly be said to have produced his best results on them. I don't care how slow people say Wimbledon is.

yeah, he is probably medium speed player. i just think he is more vulnerable at very fast hard courts and carpets in indoor seasons. But it's not easy to tell because indoor seasons are now less relevant. But you know, sometimes it makes me wonder why it took many years for Federer to finally win the indoor carpet title at his home town Basel.

As AO director said this year, AO is now 2nd fast courts behind US Open. And traditionally AO is a high bouncing courts. I think it's AO high bounces makes Federer commit more mistake in backhands, for example. US Open is now considered quickest but they also slowed down the courts reportedly compared to 90's.

I think Federer love medium-slow speed courts that doesn't bounce too high, which is now the status of Wimbledon courts.

He does well on medium-slow speed courts too, but you can't say he doesn't like fast courts just because he played poorly in Basel. His first title was an indoor tournament.

Argh! Ancic plays poorly, gets broken and allows Ferrero back in the set.

His first title was on carpet in Milan,I remember he beat Goran there.Hope Ancic takes it to a third set.BP for Ancic.

yep, Federer is certainly capable on all surfaces. it goes without saying that.
as recall, he won title on all 4 surfaces in 2002 already.

By the way, Federer's 1st Master's title was at Hamburg, probably the slowest courts on earth, that also happens to bounce much less than main stream clay court.

Mario looks certainly serious about his coming back.

wow mario takes 2nd set. i don't think nalbandain wants mario on hard courts.

stats look healthier for mario in general except that mario is having problem with JCF's 1st serves..

zero out of 5 break point chances in 1st set for Mario.

ancic has no business running around using his forehand. He makes more errors from that wing and he hits harder with the backhand to. He has a sweet 2hander. I still feel like there's missing som pace in his groundstrokes and it will be hard for him to break back in the top 10, sadly since I like the guy

this is certainly crash between 2 desires. 2 guys desiring a coming back to top 10. mario from mono's. JCF badly wants to be back in top 10.
