Which match was a bigger shock: Nadal-Soderling RG 2009 or Nadal-Rosol Wimby 2012?'

So which of the 2 matches you can see in the title created the biggest shock in the tennis world? Was it RG 2009, because it was the first time Nadal ever lost on Roland Garros? Or was it the match against Rosol, because he was ranked 100th?

Hard...I would say 2009 RG.

Everyone knows Nadal is vulnerable during the first week of Wimbledon.....just like Borg was.

I think Rosol. World #100, shouldn't get more than a handful of games usually. Hadn't Soderking already taken Nadal to 5 sets in a slam? Ok not RG, but still.

Rosol, because he was ranked 100th and a relatively unknown player.

Soderling. Nadal has been known to be pushed by relatively unknown players from time to time off clay. Many just never get over the finish line.

On clay? Happens like once in a blue moon.

About equal.
RG is his backyard, but Rosol was an unkown player.

However I think RG was more painful, because everyone including himself believe the trophy was in the bag before the tournament even got started.

Rosol, by far. No matter how invulnerable BP is on dirt, Sod was a Top Ten player, and, stuff happens-and it happens a lot more than a Top Ten guy than with Mr. 100.

Was he really a sure thing to win that year though? He almost lost to Novak in the semifinal and lost to Fed in the Madrid final. Heartbreaking loss for Rafa no doubt but Rosol being ranked 100 must sting a little more. At least Soderling was a very good player..

soderling was ranked in the 20s at that RG. he didn't emerge as a top player until afterward.

soderling was also known as a fast court specialist. he gave peak fed a really tough match at halle one year when he was still completely unknown.

But he was cruising through the first 3 round until he met Soderling in the 4th round. Soderling was a good player but the previous time they met on clay(Rome) was when Nadal destroyed him 6-1 6-0. No one gave Soderling a shot in that match.

True.

However, we know soderling is a very good player, he didn't just go away after that match. I don't think Rosol will ever become as highly ranked as Soderling.

I think how much an upset loss stings to the loser and how big a shock it was to the tennis world can be two completely different things. It's possible that BP viewed the Dirtball as a done deed-why WOULDN'T he?-and he was just a couple of matches from sealing the deal. However upsetting the Rosol loss was, it was in the 2nd round, not to mention his much decreased likelihood of winning Wimbledon in the first place, so, maybe it didn't sting as much, but there's no doubt in my mind that the general public was more shocked by Rosol.

I personally thought Nadal was never going to lose a match at RG. At Wimbledon he already showed vulnerability, especially in the first week. But then again, he lost to someone I never even heard of until that point. And the way Rosol played for someone ranked 100th was incredible.
I think if I weigh those factors of the Wimbledon match against the fact that Nadal lost in 'his' RG, I have to conclude that both matches shocked me equally.

But you may be right, it's possible that the great public was more shocked when he got Rosol'd.

Soderling was a much better player than Rosol, but Nadal is much better at RG than Wimbledon. So it has to be the RG match.
