I'll add Ginepri and James Blake...they've both got pretty tough first-round opponents. If Jurgen Melzer plays like he did against Roddick at USO05, robby's going to have a long day...and Jose Acasuso can be tough on a slow surface, though James may be able to overpower him...

Juergen Melzer did not play Roddick at the US Open it was Gilles Muller that beat him.

Ugh...thanks idj49- my bad! Serves me right for trying to recall matches without my morning coffee! I think I'll retract Ginepri's name form the potential casualty list then...

Doubtful. They've only been seeding 32 players (as opposed to 16) for a couple of years now, since 2001 or 2002.
Oh really? Then how about all top 16 players getting thru the first round? That ever happened on the man's side?

Davydenko, refer back here when it happens ;)

Yeah, I think Davydenko is going out in the 1st RD. It's unfair because Karlovics just suck, but he still wins because his freaking tall height.

I say... none.
(has this ever happened before? not just top 20 but top 32?)
When you say, "ever" do you mean, like #3 Roddick losing in straights to Muller at 2005 USO, or #1 Hewitt going down to Karlovic at 2003 Wimby (...just off the top of my head).

Or do you mean at the AO:
2005 AO seeds
#5 Moya lost to GG-L
#19 Spadea lost to Stepanek
(#28 Kiefer lost to O. Rochus)

He meant "has it ever happened that none of the seeds lose in the first round."
Yeah, well, that wasn't the question. I think you're giving him way too much credit.

Having said that, "none" is a good answer, as in, "I don't think any of the Top 20 seeds will lose in 1R."

Richard Gasquet FRA (14) vs. Tommy Haas GER

James Blake USA (20) vs. Jose Acasuso ARG

Both Ljubicic and Davydenko matches will be extremely tough. it depends on them winning 'em ;)

Haha yeah, we are lucky Yao Ming didn't play tennis. No one would stand a chance! 8)

There are my picks. Ginepri's the one I feel the least sure about.

Guillermo Coria ARG (6) vs. Victor Hanescu ROM
David Ferrer ESP (11) vs. Florent Serra FRAT
Robby Ginepri USA (13) vs. Jurgen Melzer AUT
Richard Gasquet FRA (14) vs. Tommy Haas GER

Ljubicic's serve is better than Guccione's. If he plays well, it'll be 4 sets at the MOST.

No way Davydenko is losing to Karlovic in a best of 5 in the Aussie sun.

Don't be so sure. Have you ever seen Guccione serving? If not, this may be your chance.

He's my darkhorse for Wimby also ;)

Only 6 of the 32 seeds lost. Moya, Volandri, Dent, Monfils in addition to those two.
To tell you the truth, I don't know 6 is a low number. Seems kinda high to me, but I'll have to look into it when I get a chance.

Babblelot,
# of seeds that lost in the 1st Round of Australian:
'05-3
'04-13
'03-4
'02-6
'01-0(and this was the last year that there were 16 seeds. Theoretically there should have been more dangerous unseeded floaters that year. 10 of the 16 seeds advanced to the round of 16 that year.)

No, I know he's got a nasty serve, he's lefty and served 51 aces in 3 sets last year!!! Here are the match statistics from the Ivan Chris match:

Personally, I think Ivan, when he's on, has the best serve in tennis.
