Player B: Federer with Agassi's backhand would be too much for Player A to handle. Besides, Player A really wouldnt have that much talent as Nadal and Sampras arent as talented as Federer or Agassi.

I am not sure how much more Federer can benefit by having qualities of Agassi. Agassi's return of serve is something Federer may like but Federer himself retuns serves well.

On the other hand, Nadal like movement will help SAMPRAS a lot. Now we have Sampras with some nadal like movement. Ignoring anything else, This itself will create tons of problems of anyone else.

Federer has enough problems dealing with Nadal as is. Now if he as to deal with Nadal with Sampras like serve, he will go crazy!!!

Niether one would DOMINATE the other.

Although, I'd say the Nadal/Sampras abilities would overlap less than the Federer Agassi. That would give Nampras the advantage in my opinion. One of the best baseline players of all time, with the abilites of one of the best serve and volleyers of all time.

But I agree, that Nampras would be an amazing player.

It's not clear what Agassi would bring to Fed's game, a better return of serve I guess but Fed's return is already pretty sharp.
OTOH Nadal's amazing defense combined with Sampras's phenomenal serve would be totally unbeatable.
In a word, Nadal-Sampras would blow any opponent off the court and would never lose a match!!!

Agassi's backhand is better than Federer's. Rafa wont be able to exploit it as easily.

I agree. And if you made Federer into an even cleaner ball striker, that would be dangerous. Both players would be great, but I still think player B would be better.

Nadal already has a better serve than Sampras (placement>power), and their volleys are about the same. But Federer would eliminate his weakness by acquiring Agassi's backhand, so player B dominates.

A player with Nadal's face and Sampras' posture would really look like a primate.

At post, player B would win. Player A has too many ailments.

Absolutely, we all saw that Fed could take care of Sampras`s serve even back in 2001, and with Agassis 2hander he would be the ultimate player even more.
Easily B.

Rafa beats Fed even without a power serve.. if he had the serve and volleys of Sampras he would win every time they met. Rafa would win so many free points of his serve (big+). Agassi had great returns no doubt about that(not as big +), but with Rafa´s speed it really doesnt matter.
Nadpras would win every GS for sure:)

I agree. Federer has a much easier time returning sampras' serve than Nadal's because Nadal has the lefty spin that gets to Federer's backhand. An Agassi 2 hander would give him a backhand that never breaks down.

Combination of FED/Agassi would have:

Best FH, bh, return, and movement, in the history of the game.

Combination of Sampras/Nadal would have:

Best serve and second serve in the history of the game.

I take Fed/Agassi.

"What are you smokin man?"- Pete Sampras (to the chair umpire in the 1996 US Open Quarterfinals)

That said, Sampras' serve was good because of the power, but it was great because of the placement. Sampras had some of the best placement on his serve of anyone, and with the power and spin he had his serve, his serve was unmatched by anyone except Karlovic and maybe Ivanisevic. You cannot say that Nadal has a better serve than Sampras did at all because Sampras had equal placement to Nadal (or better) but his power and spin overwhelmed opponents as well. As for volleys, I admit that there are better volleyers out there than Sampras, and his serve made his volleys look better. But, Nadal rarely has to hit as many volleys as Sampras did, and when he does, he doesn't look too good. Nadal usually hits one easy volley to the open court to finish a point, while Sampras consistently played points where he constructed points at the net.

But to answer the question in the thread, I think Fed/Agassi would be an unbeatable player. As Drakulie mentioned, the combination of the movement, forehand, backhand, and return of Fed/Agassi would be incredible. Nampras would have the serve and great on the run shots, but Fed/Agassi's weapons outweigh Nampras' by a long shot.

so you guys are saying you would rather have Agassi´s returns than Sampras´s serve:confused:

LOL at Federer moving better than Nadal, Federer is a great mover no doubt, but Nadal is better. Nadal is faster, hits better on the run and moves upto drop shots better.

Sampras only owned Agassi on fast surfaces.

Agassi owned Sampras on slower surfaces (half of the slams)

They met more on fast surfaces b/c Agassi was better on fast surfaces than Sampras was on slow surfaces.

Nadal's H2H over Fed is more meaningful.

I always thought that Nalbandian is a very similar player to Agassi. Sure Nadal beat Agassi when Agassi was still playing but Agassi was watching a lot of shots pass him by. We all know Nalby is a very hard matchup for Nadal. Well anyone with a great 2 handed bh that take the ball early and take time away from Nadal in general can break down Nadals topspin forehand. That said I think the matches would be very close.
Sampras serve is far better than Nadal's serve but I think Fed would have an easier time returning Sampras serve than Nadal serve... Who knows but I think fed/agassi como would win maybe 60% of the time on all surfaces.

Sampras would bring down Nadals claycourt skillz :p

the fedassi combo imo. fed and agassi's techniques would compliment more than sampras and nadal's. fed's remarkable anticipation of the serve plus agassi's agressive swing would make the sampras serve ineffective. the volleys would be easily neutalized by fed's superb movement and shot making, and agassi's techniques could make him hit the ball cleanly for passing shots. plus sampras and nadal's fragile bodies against the monsters of fitness? definitely fedassi.

Nadal maybe faster but Federer at his peak level had greater anticipation and glided around the court effortlessly.

Cool thread and it's nice to see civil discussion about this instead of flames.

That said - I'm a pretty big Fed fan but I think Nampras gets the edge here.

When you put it all together the talents of Nadal and Sampras are more complimentary than Fed/Agassi would be.

Nadal no US Open, Sampras no French Open. Federer-Agassi wins on all surfaces.
Precisely, they'd complement each other perfectly. Nadal would help Sampras get RG and Sampras would enable Rafa to get USO. That's why put together they would win everything!

Fed + Sampras = unbeatable. Pete's serve, running FH, overhead, and volleys + remainder of Fed's game would be unstoppable on any surface.

The only thing Agassi does better than Fed is return serve.

I think at his best he moves just as well if not better. Nadal plays from further back in the court, so he's always seen running more. Federer has far better anticipation to the ball and better footwork overall. So yes, I'd say Federer moves better, at his best.

Fed's serve and forehand, along with Agassi's backhand, Fed' BH slice, Agassi's returns, Fed's volleys. You can't get a lot better than that.

The other pair have won it on their own. Besides, Sampras would be playing by himself by the USO finals because Rafa's half would be in a plane by then citing bad knees, abdominal muscle tear, fatigue........

agassi returns very well because of his compact swing therefore his agressive returns. but he's getting aced like all other players, so anticipation is not his forte. now, while federer is not getting aced because of his superb anticipation, he just chips the returns back. fed's anticipation+agassi's agressive returns=monster. add to that fed's magic and agassi's clean and consistent hitting will be enough to neutralize whatever nadpras brings to the table.

Federer with Agassi's BH = Best FH and BH combination of all time. Nothing beats that. Nothing.

So, does the composite player have the best advantage of the each player. I mean Pete wasn't known for his stamina and Nadal is known for great stamina. Does the composite player have stamina in-between Nadal and Sampras or does he have the stamina of Nadal?

I think Nadal/Sampras is obvious. Federer is an all-around player, but a complete baseline player. Agassi's skills wouldn't help him much. Sampras lacks a good clay court game... DUH!

Exactly, plus, Fed's serve is phenomenal as well, and neither Nadal or Sampras are great returners. Take Federer, add more BH consistency, and return of serve, and Fedassi will be able to beat Samprafa with multiple breaks of serve, despite Samprafa's slight edge in the service department.

reasons why nadal troubles federer:

his lefty crosscourt forehand rapes federers OHBH, causing federer to turn into ********

federer with one of the best 2hbh's in the game that is dead on target? insane.

Hmm, tough one.

Let's see fed+agassi from the baseline > nadal+sampras from the baseline

fed+agassi from the baseline vs sampras/nadal at the net , fed+agassi would the best return/passing combo , hmm ....

Doesn't matter if that composite player would come to the net only when required, when the baseline play would clearly be the best ever

While it's true that the strengths of nadal and sampras overlap less and they have more to gain from each other than the other combo, return of serve is questionable . Fed+agassi combo has zero weakness from the baseline and would be tough for nadal+sampras ( with sampras' volleys ) at the net

I'll take fed+agassi by a slim margin
