Let’s just assume that no young guy will win a slam this year, with Nadal’s stranglehold on the FO and Fed’s on W seemingly as tight as ever (assuming they’re healthy of course).

But which of these young guys is the most likely to win a Masters 1000 this year? Zverev, Dimitrov, and Sock broke through last year, so who is ready to step up this year?

Note: I’m excluding Thiem from the poll because he’d be the obvious choice given how well he plays on clay. Kyrgios is also being excluded because he has made a couple of deep runs at these events and is clearly ready.

My vote, surprisingly enough, is going to this guy:

coric-roland-garros-2017-monday.jpg

I’ve definitely not been his biggest fan but he has impressed me a lot in the last few months, first with his efficient win over Zverev at the USO and earlier today with a beatdown of Shapovalov in Davis Cup. He’s still only 21 and is very solid in a Djokovic kind of way.

Why exclude Thiem? He hasn't actually won yet, and who says he will.

I'd say Chung has the best chances of staying consistent for a week.

Recency bias.

I feel like Chung may be a tad overrated at the moment. Straight-setting Novak at the AO is a great feat but Novak is clearly nowhere near his top level due to injury.

Shapovalov, Coric and Rublev will get Masters titles at one point.

Chung is my best bet because he is playing very well.

I have a feeling that Thiem and Kyrgios will get Masters titles this year

would be good for the game to see ANYONE new break through!

Cannot argue with there. I think the slams are locked down by Fedal atm. But, it would great to seem some fresh blood winning a couple of the masters now. Chung and Shaps are two of my favs at this point, going to be cheering them on for a long time it seems...

Where do you guys see Chung breaking through? Maybe Miami? Or Canada?

Both look valid, the most important thing to see is how he responds in the next few weeks after his great AO run. Does he retreat into his shell, or does he now believe he is ready to open his wings and soar towards the top?

Chung is so overrated on here :D
Shapovalov will win a grand slam before Chung even wins a masters.

Kyrgios is Most Likely To Win A Slam But Not A 1000
I think Kyrgios is way more likely to win a 1000 than a Slam. He has less chance of beating top players in a Bo5 format, and he has less chance of breaking down physically again.

And Chung is super overrated after watching Zverev self destruct and beating an injured Djokovic.

Shapster. I believe home crowd in Canada is what he needs to give his best performence and his best performence at this year authum will be just good enough to win him his first Masters. If he is on fire he definitely could win and moreover I am his fan so I am biased :) His biggest weaknes is his ROS, if he can improve it he would became real threat at any level.

Coric is not nearly good enough. His best surface is clay however even there I just dont see him winning. Rafa/Thiem/Goffin and many others are just better clay courters than him and on hard it is even harder for him. Even when he just defeated Shapovalov on clay with great play it seemed like it was his best level, like he does not have another geer. The level was good, good enough to comfortably beat solid Shapo (on his weakest surface though), however still far from Masters winning level.

Chung is about the same as Coric for me. However he is on rise and had great last 4 or so months so if he can improve at this speed, he for sure could be contender in some. But still not buying him.

Rublev would be my second choice. If he can somehow improve his serve he can be great.

If you exclude Thiem and Kyrgios, I doubt any new player will win a Masters. Maybe Del Potro (would be awesome), but no one else.
