I honestly think Kei ran out of gas. He went the distance in his 3 previous matches and his body just couldn't carry him through. I had him as my favorite to beat Cilic after whom he beat to get there....plus by now we know Kei and his fitness/body are never consistant...sooo that was just the first major example?

there's no way Kei was the favorite if you actually took into account how Cilic played in the SF vs federer ( I didn't watch the QF vs berdych, but his performance was similar from what I heard )

after the semi and before the final

That was a flawless performance from cilic vs federer. If he can keep up that level vs nishikori, the title is his.

Well, going through his draw in 2009 the 3 biggest names that Jump out are Rafa, Ferrer and Fernando. Rafa obviously big stunning victory. Ferrer, well he is a very good clay courter and honestly I have always though he has underperformed at the French overall, and Fernando, dangerous obviously as well.

Nishi beat Novak, Stan, and Raonic.

I would probably say Raonic and Fernando cancel each other out on the respective surface in terms of skill and danger level at the time. Stan to me on hardcourts is a more impressive win than the Ferrer win. Stan had won the AO in 2014 and had been in the US Open SF the previous year. Then it comes down to Novak and Rafa...I'd probably say Rafa on Clay is the more impressive win especially given what Rafa went on to achieve after that defeat...although Novak had been in the previous 4 finals at the US Open before Kei took him out so its not a total landslide.

I look at it this way, no one thought Rafa would lose, and I'm not sure how many people thought Kei could actually beat Novak...its close which run was more impressive. I might have to tip the scales because Robin was able to make the final again in 2010...whereas Kei hasn't really been able to replicate that form.
That Kei run is overrated. None of them besides maybe Raonic were playing up to their true ability.

I wouldn't call 6 years a small prime
He was just successful real young. Top ten by the age of 19, #1 by 20 and finished by 25.

He was also unfortunate with injuries. Funnily enough, what ruined his career was probably an injured he acquired away from tennis.

i would put baghdatis AO 2007 and soderling face to face, i mean baghdatis defeated 3 top 10s including coming from 2 sets down in the semifinal but then you have soderling defeating nadal wich ranks even above the one djokovic did

Soderling's win over Nadal is the biggest upset in history, but I don't think his run is the most impressive. And immediately after Robin beat Rafa, the focus was all about whether Federer would now win the elusive FO title.

I pick Baghdatis! His (unseeded) run to the AO final is not only the most impressive, but the most magical. The wins over #17, #2, #7, and #4, the exciting 2R, QF, and SF 5-setters, his charisma, the praying girlfriend in the stands, the amazing crowd...his matches were the ones fans wanted to watch.

Nothing can top beating Rafa @RG in 2009. I don't care about the supposed knee problem, Soderking just powered through Bull that day. It wasn't easy, ending in 4th set tiebreaker!

To be fair Robin dismantled Davydenko in the QF in a way I've never seen before or since. That was truly impressive.

Among those mentioned, Nishikori had the biggest fortune in the sense that he was the only one to get a final opponent not named Federer, Nadal or Djokovic. The others were less fortunate.

That's why it was embarrasing that he lost to his then pigeon Cilic in the final. He barely put up a fight.

On the other hand, he is the only one on the list to have beaten TWO reigning Slam champions back to back (as well as former and future).

I agree Baggy's was definitely the most memorable in terms of charismatic appeal and no other match on this list comes close. It's the one whose feel I still remember best. But in overall level it definitely wasn't. That would be Tsonga/Gonzo/Sod

Interesting results!

Shows how high our esteem is for Nadal on clay that Soderling is crushing it!

While Berdych @ 2010 Wimbledon, where he ended Federer's attempt at an 8th straight, final has just 1 vote. He also beat Djokovic. (I see he also took down one B. Becker:))

I wonder if part of why Berdych isn't getting much support is he doesn't seem quite as much an underdog as the likes of Soderling, Bagdhatis or Gonzalez?

Shout out for Rainer Schuttler @ Australian Open 03.

Had a walkover over Safin but took down an aged Krajicek, the dangerous Blake, Nalbandian and Roddick en route to being annihilated by Agassi in the final.

Even his first round opponent, Portas, was a former Hamburg champion

The thing is the Federer loss at 2010 Wimb was less shocking because he was already having a sub par season for his standards and his form was already very bad even before the Berdych match. He almost lost in the 1st round after all.

The Nadal loss was much more unexpected. It pretty much came out of nowhere. Especially when you factor in that Rafa's conquerer had just got destroyed by Rafa in Rome 6-0 6-1 just a few weeks ago.
