Zvonereva.
I get a kick out of watching an athlete start crying in the middle of a match. Over and over again. Come to think of it, Dementieva & Myskina have done the same thing. Probably not good for the image of women in sports.
What the deal with these crazy Russians?

Dementieva really impressed me at the USO this year. granted, the serve is a bit of a liability, but then again Davenport couldn't do a damn thing with it because of the junk/sidespin on it. Outside of that, she's a bright, athletic player with a lot of variation in her game. She knows how to volley and her fh on the run is fantastic. She's a lot more elegant to watch play than Sharapova who, while i know is undergoing a growth spurt and is subsequently adjusting to her taller frame, kind of reminds me of a giraffe when she runs after balls. I really don't like Maria's game that much; it's rather one-dimensional and her strokes are kind of ugly. She's unmatched in tenacity though.

Another reason i like Elena: she's got the best legs in the WTA. Cheers!

i say sharapova and dementieva tied. I like laughing at her serve and watching her groundies were good. i got really pissed during uso though because i was waiting for the Agassi vs. Blake game and it was the three setter of dementieva and Davenport. i was soooo angry. I was screaming stuff like "END IT DAMMIT!" at the tv.

Dinara Safina is a lot like her brother...really strong, really tall, a big server, tempermental and self-critical.. It will be interesting to see how her career progresses.

I like these games the most:

Petrova (Solid groundies, great slice, strong volleys, powerful serve, CRAZY MIND)

Myskina (Killer groundies, speedy as a gazelle, is actually very good at net with really nice touch, CRAZY MIND- love her emotion)

Kuznetsova (A fine allrounder who's talent has not yet matured. I've seen the girl match it on the baseline as well as she slice or topspin approaches and puts away at the net- her development years under Sanchez-Vicario and Navratilova have come out in moments of brililiance which she has not yet been able to sustain. Beautiful kick serve, very speedy and fit, spanish killer forehand...plus Alicia Molik says she is a great person)

Two games I most interested in seeing progress: Kuznetsovas and Sharapovas. Kuznetsovas for the above reasons. Sharapovas because I think she is arguably the most mentally strong player (if not just a step behind JHH) but lacks variety. So I would love to see how a mental game like Maria's combined with probable future technical development will turn out.

I saw Kuznetsova. She's got the potential to win a handful of Slam titles and has a really well-rounded game, even if she doesn't always use it to her advantage. Sharapova grunts too loud and is a bit robotic. Dementieva's serve elicits laughter. Myskina seems more interested in having an on-going chat/fistfight with her former lover/coach. Zvonareva is constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. And poor Petrova, she might become the next Kournikova and never manage to win a title in spite of being a solid top 10 player.

Kuznetsova - gifted gym-class standout, who, when her talent has fully blossomed, has the potential to be the best among the Russian armada.

Kuzzy, at her best most like Serena. At her worst, most like Serena. Dementieva's groundies are just too sweet though.

Kournikova to me had the most interesting game. She was the most fun to watch. She hits with a lot of angle, moreso than many of the current Russians. Although her serve weakened as her career progressed, Anna could bring the heat when she wanted to. She's hit a 116mph serve before her major injuries. Anna really did have a great game though. She played high risk tennis. She wasn't the hardest hitter, but hit very hard. Great groundies, solid technique. Her foot speed and quickness and her lightness on her feet was incredible. She played tennis with grace. I still think she's got the best volleys ever by a Russian player.

Only if she could serve...

Dementieva is my favorite among the Russians. You gotta love those ground strokes. She is known for having no serves but she can reliably get away with her heavy groundies and tireless retrieving. She is also a pretty good doubles player, which adds to the variety of her game. Most of all, do you remember the speech she gave after the championship matches in Roland Garros and US Open last year? Besides Agassi, I can't think of any other tennis player who is so eloquent and thought-provoking.

Oh, and an afterthought. I totally dislike Sharapova's game. Well, that is if you believe she has a game to begin with. Her indifference to the finesse and variety of tennis is a huge turn-off. She may be cute but that's pretty much it.

The one thing I have to give Sharapova is her fighting spirit. She won't give up regardless of the score. and when she's ahead, she doesn't let up either.
Those are the qualities I like in a Player ...

I hope and wish Dementieva has the courage to work on her serve in the off season and work on her ball toss. She has an awsome game....but, listen to this amazing statistic;

She's never won a tournament!!!

All because of her serve.

Including the old-timers, it would be Natasha Zvereva without a doubt. She was an artist with a racquet, had qualities of McEnroe, Rios, Federer. Lacked the grim tunnel focus and/or the confidence and/or worth ethic for singles.

Among the current crop that came up in the past five years, it's Petrova and Myskina. Just very nice games to watch, especially Petrova with her variety. She also seems to lack the edge to get through the biggest events, but she's close. Myskina's tactics seem pretty advanced.

As a bridge among the generations, and as the most consistent and educational player - someone whose game amateurs should emulate for its percentageness - it would be Likhotseva. A very dogged player with nice strokes, a volley and consistency in all aspects. What is more impressive is how her career has gotten a second wind after it fell off. Probably all the young Russian model-types and their press motivated her.

I was also impressed by Linetskaya, seeing her in person. Haven't seen Kirilenko, she may be the one that overtakes all the rest. Zvonareva, like Kuznetzova, seems determined to beat herself.

The other comment about Zvereva is that she, like YK, came of age while the Soviet system was collapsing. But they were trained by the 'system' - and one way of rebelling against the tight control they experienced as kids is to underachieve. I think this was a factor in both careers.

Dementieva won 4 WTA tournaments in her career. (Hasselt in 2004, Amelia island, Bali and Shanghai in 2003) She hasn't won a title in 2005.

Absolutely Correct about that .. how soon they forget

Still think Anna had quicker hands around the net than Zvereva. However, Anna is definitely one of the better Russian athletes, she didn't have the raw strength like Kuznetsova and Sharapova have, but she was quicker than both of these players and MUCH MUCH lighter on her feet. Like I said, she's definitely one of the most graceful players to ever pick up a racquet.

Thanks for putting me right.

Wasn't Zvereva from the Ukraine?
