A bit of success from several NextGen Russians begs the question, "Do any of these kids have it to reach top 10 for the first time since Davydenko and Safin?"
Karen Khachanov, 20: Plied the Challenger route for a couple of years as a teen and at age 20 got into USO'16 via qualies, won a round and then tested eventual SFist Nishikori before losing in four. With confidence, he then broke through with an ATP250 title in Chengdu, beating 5 top 60 players while dropping just two sets. Disappointing results since then (1R qualies loss in Shanghai to Mischa Zverev and 1R Moscow loss to Dzumhur). Current top 60.
Daniil Medvedev, 20: Quietly (except for a DQ for "racist comments" during a Challenger match vs Donald Young) and slowly approaching top 100 via the Challenger route, he has now reached the QF of ATP250 Moscow and has a decent shot at another upset today vs Robert.
Andrey Rublev, 19: Top junior results have been followed by very mixed results in ATP events and Challengers. Has all the shots to rise to a high level but unsteady results show he needs more seasoning. 1R qualies loss at Moscow to fellow Russian teen Bublik is a perfect example. Currently top 160.
Alexander Bublik, 19: Breakthrough results this week at Moscow, going through qualies and snatching a top 20 scalp vs RBA, Bublik can crack the top 200 with another upset later today vs PCB. His previous best results have been 3 Futures titles this year and an upset of Gabashvili in 2R Astana Challenger.
All big guys (Rublev the shortest at 6'2"-1.88m) with easy power. Can any polish the rough edges and bring Russian tennis back to prominence on the ATP Tour??
Discuss.
