I don’t see his backhand being close to a forehand at all. It just looks like an abbreviated backhand.
Well it sure is abbreviated. He times it perfectly and guides it almost entirely with his right hand, with the dominant left hand just there for a little stability. Mecir used to do something similar too. Nalbandian too, to an extent although it's a little quicker and more explosive of a swing.

Nalbandian is the only player I've seen where his backhand can genuinely look like a left handed forehand if he took his right hand off it.

In terms of how the backhand is used, Safin. 2hbh's have always typically been used for more compactness, allowing you to stay in points more, use better accuracy, more stability, etc... Marat said **** the stability, and used it as a nuclear missile.
