Who are the D1 college coaches who have been at the same college 20+ years (can include years as asst coach)?

Manny Diaz 32nd season at UGA
Kenny Thorne 22nd season at GA Tech

I was curious after reading that Rex Ecarma had been at Louisville 29 years before his recent firing. Obviously some coaches have weathered the decades better than others...

I'm sure there are some, but I can't name any at the moment. In recent years I know of numerous coaches that were at their institution more than 20 years that recently were forced to retire. I'll leave them unnamed. The rational was to replace them even though they remained successful because of their high salaries due to merit salary raises over the years. The ones I know of were granted an early retirement package enticing their voluntary exit. The AD in these circumstances was able to then bring in a new head coach for much less salary.

Now that you bring it up I can see that as an covert reason for Ecarma's exit. I still contend he was railroaded. LOL

I had a list of all the men's head coaches tenure as of the 2016-17 season but haven't updated it since then - been meaning to do that and create a women's list but haven't had the time. There were 31 coaches with 20+ years of tenure at the same school back then though several of those have moved on in the last few years.

One of the highest paid tennis coaches, if not the highest, with no NCAA men team title at the end of May for the past twenty years. How do you spell "overrated"?

This is how you spell "overrated":

When you win over 87% of your matches and rest of coaches in program history have won only 52%
When you have won 75% of your matches against other 'power' conference teams (i.e. ACC, Big 12, SEC, PAC 10)
When you win 98% of your home matches and have only lost 7 matches at home in your 20 seasons
When you have won 275 out of your last 276 home matches
When you have lost 4 matches or less in 13 of your last your 14 years
When you have lost 1 regular season conference match in your last 14 years
When you have won 28 in a row over your university's biggest sporting rival

Not everything is about NCAA titles. Tucker’s accomplishments are well documented and respected in college tennis and world-wide tennis. Ohio State is known for tennis because of Ty Tucker, one of the best recruiters in college tennis and a coach who is capable of turning a 3-star recruit into top 50 college player. He is also the third winningest coach in any sport in Big Ten history!! Although he doesn’t have NCAA team title, Tucker has coached 16 individuals in the NCAA singles championship and 13 doubles teams. Also, Ohio State won last 14 Big10 titles while losing only 1 conference match in those 14 years.

Your hostility towards one of the best current college coaches is obviously biased.
You cannot say that Ty Tucker is overrated.

Oh yeah. You know what Ohio State did to both Earle Bruce and John Cooper right? Both of them got kicked to the curve for not winning NCAA title at Ohio State. You think OSU hired Urban Meyer and made him one of the highest paid coaches in the country and OSU is OK if Urban Meyer not winning the NCAA title? I am a big OSU fan and I want to see OSU bring home the men NCAA title in May. I've been waiting for twenty years and look like it will not happen in my lifetime. I really do not care about the Big10 title. At the end of the day, it is about championship in May. Tucker needs to prove that he is worth being the highest paid college tennis coach in the country. Either bring home the NCAA championship or OSU needs to find someone who can. This is after all, "the" Ohio State University, not some unknown schools.

You should look at where Ohio State tennis was before Ty Tucker started coaching there

Having bumped into Ty a few times as an official, and watched Ohio State play from the umpire's chair, (and hey, I graduated from another B1G school), for sure OSU men's tennis has improved over his watch.
It's almost like someone who should've, but hasn't won the Super Bowl, or a Grand Slam tennis or golf tournament. You figure that it will happen at some point.

Winning a championship is not easy, anywhere, anytime. As a fan, I am not an OSU fan, but I figure that they will have their day, sooner rather than later.

Another thing to consider is that OSU is generally an indoors team while the May Championship is always outdoors. OSU had won the national indoor championships already. However, when will that happen outdoors, I cannot argue it will considering there are always some better outdoor teams.

I am sure Ty Tucker is a nice and friendly guy. I have nothing against Tucker personally. My criticism of Tucker is that he is the highest paid tennis coach in the country, he needs to bring the NCAA men team championship to OSU. This is "the" Ohio State University, not some unknown universities. If he can't do that, the Gene Smith needs to find someone who can. No one said that winning a championship is easy. That's such a lame excuse. University of Illinois. It won the team outdoor men NCAA championship in 2003.

Sorry I was not directed at you. I've seen enough of Tucker this year that I think change is needed @OSU in order to bring home the championship in the month of May:

1- OSU was the overall #1 ranked and lost to a 9th seeded UNC. I put the responsibility solely on the coach for not getting his players to be ready. I can swallow the lost in the final last year to WF because WF was playing on its home court. But this year lost against UNC was inexcusable, especially when you're the overwhelmingly favorite. Tucker couldn't get his players ready for that match and it showed.

2- JJ Wolf was 2nd seeded in the tournament and he had no business losing to the Gators freshman Sam Riffice. Riffice does not even #1 position for the Gators (Oliver Crawford played the #1 position). Riffice is an excellent freshman but Wolf had no business losing to a freshman. It tells me Tucker didn't prepare Wolf well for the match.

If you are the highest paid tennis coach and fail to win the championship, it's time for the OSU AD to move on with another coach who can.

This guy has to be a troll. Ohio State getting rid of Ty Tucker would be incredibly dumb.

I don't think anyone else could sustain that program the way Tucker has. Part of his success is that he is an Ohio native who played at tOSU and bleeds scarlett and gray.

I wonder how many of these longer serving coaches get to keep their jobs because colleges just don't care about success of tennis vs. basketball and football? For some coaches, getting a top gig is harder than keeping it. Then you just feed off reputation. I am not calling out coaches because I don't know the D1 world, but Stanford, Duke, USC, UCLA, Miami etc can sell themselves on a good education or great location. A lot of credit should go to the assistants at these high level schools who do a lot of the day in and day out work without their name recognition with the hope of one day going on and getting their own program to run. Too often they are blocked by someone else with a bigger name.

I agree Tucker is a great coach, but I have to laugh that Bruce Berque got fired from Michigan because he couldn't beat OSU, then he takes the assistant job at Texas and ends up being credited with the NCAA title, beating OSU in the process.

I am so sick and tired of people not being able to defend their positions and call other people troll.

The fact of the matter is that Tucker has been at OSU for almost 20 years and no NCAA championship in the month of May. Great coaches win championship. Would anyone call Dick Gould a great coach had he not won 17 NCAA men tennis championship? Would anyone say Federer is one of the GOAT had Federer won everything the Master 1000 but not GS.

I like to be proven wrong that Tucker is a great coach but not winning the NCAA men championship. Is that the new "norm" now?

Marino was not a great QB compared to either Elway or Brady. Elway and Marino were drafted in the same year. Elway was the first overall pick while Marino was the last first round pick. Elway has two SB while Marino has ZERO. Elway also played in 5 SB compared to 1 for Marino.

Patrick Ewing was not a great Center compared to Olajuwon. Both were the first pick overall in their class. Olajuwon has two NBA rings while Ewing has ZERO. Olajuwon beat Ewing head to head in the NBA final.

Therefore, you can't be called great at anything if you do not win championship.

LOL.... Trent Dilfer didn't win SB. Ray Lewis and the Ravens defense did. Doug Williams didn't win the SB, the Redskins did because of the Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs. Marino played for HOF coach Don Shula and Marino didn't win the SB so Marino is a good QB, not great QB.

If OSU wants to be a good but not great team, then keep Tucker. As an OSU fan, I want to see OSU win NCAA championship, not big 10 championship. Tucker had his chance in 2009, 2018 and 2019 and he couldn't get it done.

I have never been near OSU. Personally never liked Tucker because of his lineup stacking and some of he demeanor I saw from him during matches, e.g. towards umpires.

But I had to grudgingly admit that he was doing a good job. Taking 5-star local recruits and redshirting them, turning them into blue chip caliber players over time, coaching doubles well, etc.

As for winning NCAA championships, let's look at how the Big Ten has done historically. We have 2003 with Illinois. What else?

Ok so you admitted that he was doing a good job, not a great job. There is a big difference between good and great. Considering that he is probably the highest paying tennis coach in D1, I expect him to do a great job by winning at least one NCAA championship in the past twenty years with better recruits and better coaching but that's not happening. That's my gripe about Tucker. As Al Davis said "Just win baby" and I'll shut up.

I always thought that Tucker did as great of a job as anyone could do at a cold-weather school. When I was in high school and college in the late 80s to mid 90s, it was always Michigan and Minnesota (with a few exceptions) at the top of the Big 10. OSU was largely an afterthought. He built the program into a national power in an era when media money was starting to really flow into college sports and more schools could upgrade facilities, pay coaches more, etc. Obviously, people can take him to task for not winning an NC, but should they? No coach can do a great job without winning an NC?

How many national titles in the last 50 years for the Big 10? Are you going to keep citing something exceptional as if it is the new bar for success?

Pepperdine won a title in about 2006, right? So, NO EXCUSES for any other mid-major conference coach to not win a national title! Get on the ball, Ball State!

So you keep going to the argument, since he is earning one of the top salaries in college tennis,... you expect nothing less than "greatness" of performance, and greatness can only be quantified in your opinion by coaching a team to win the national championship.
I could understand your money beef if you were either a donor to the university or negatively impacted by his contract,
But unless you are paying for his salary, or signed the contract, imho your vent about what he makes is pointless.
