Who are the future of tennis?

Since Nadal and Federer will not last forever, and the other good players from this generation (Djokovic, Murray, etc) are a bit too old (except Del Potro) to be called the "future of tennis", which players coming up through the ranks do you see being the future stars of tennis, apart from Del Potro who is already a star?
 
Nikolay V. Davydenko. Not kidding. He is the one who the players will be emulating. He can take out the guys that are the up-and-comers, can beat delPo, and Davydenko-Soderling matches are my favorite match-ups of probably any. Always epics.
 
Dimitrov. Just needs to avoid injuries and he'll climb the rankings. Somehow, this era is only going to get weaker in the next 5 years so maybe he could be the dominating force in tennis.

Davydenko is too old to be the future of tennis.

Well when I had to name the player who can play at the highest level for one set, I would go with Davydenko. Then nobody can touch him, even Fed or Nadal at their best. At times he can even sustain that level for two sets, but then it's all over. And when he collapses he collapses totally. So when there comes a guy who's able to play like him for three sets in a row, he would become nr.1 and racking up the slams, no doubt.

Federer, (when active) Safin, Nadal, Soderling, Roddick, JMDP, Nalbandian all at their best level > Davydenko at his best level.

You do realise Delpo is only 16 months younger than Novak and Murray?

He's 19 and still isn't in the world top 300. He isn't anything special. Top 50 for him at BEST.

I do. Davydenko has.....................


- No big weapons, similar to most of the tour.
- Mental headcase, similar to most of the up and commers
- Adequate net game which is apparent throughout the younger generation
 
He moves people to death. He kills delPo, and half the time Robin Soderling too, from this. When on, he hits the ball deep with pace off any position side to side. Only Soderling with his pure winners can stop this of the bigger players.
 
Davydenko has beaten all of them, and his H2H against all of them except Federer (12-2) and Roddick (5-1) are close. Even has winning records against JMDP and Nadal

Nishikori, Mina, De Bakker, Gulbis, Cilic, Dimitrov, Del Potro, and Tomic.

Good. Cesc has just made a prediction. Judging by your past predictions Dmitrov will do much better. :)

Na i kid. He's my favourite 'young gun' so hopefully he does better than 50. He's got the game and talent. Hopefully he has the hunger to win big titles and become a good player instead of another Safin who failed to live up to potential or just some journeyman/era filler.

If only Soderling could stop this, he would be a much more succesful player than he is and have won several Slams, which he hasn't.

No way, even Fed at the AO open this year, when he was untouchable for anyone else, had to weather the storm. Was totally outplayed for almost two sets, en then came the unevitable choke, collapse.. whatever. And this has happened more often. I remember a FO semi between Davy-Fed a few tears ago and another AO quarter in 2006 I believe.

Federer played so bad in the first set, that threads from even the neutral fans made threads asking whether Federer was playing his worst tennis ever. And to be fair he was. And even in 2006, Davydenko played tennis of his life against an underpar Federer and still only managed to win the set 6-4. I mean, you're acting like Davydenko has godlike ability, so at his best and Federer's worst he should win comfortable, like 6-2 or 6-3.

And Davydenko lost in 2007 in straight sets. So even if he was playing his best tennis in just one set he still lost.

I'm starting to think that no one has actually watched a tennis match in 2005. Federer played awsome, Nadal was brilliant and had higher and more consistent levels than Davydenko ever will. Safin actually managed to outhit Federer that year (unlike Davydenko who couldn't outhit Federer playing his worst tennis since 2002 and got bagelled) for 5 sets consistently. Davydenko might be able to play a few good games but seriously, what good is that.

I'm sorry, but Nadal has developed his game more than almost any other since 2005 but every time he plays Davydenko recently he comes up short.
Well they were all two sets matches but that's exactly my point. The way Davydenko played at the end of last year was simply uncalled for. People tend to forget that, because there were no slams involved.

Davydenko (WT Finals form) V's Safin (AO 2005 form)

Safin wins 6-2 6-3 6-2. And i'm being generous to Davydenko. 2 slams to 0 doesn't lie. Nadal's 7 slams doesn't lie. Federer's 16 slams do not lie. These guys have higher levels than Davydenko, even on a consistent basis.

Mina impressed me against Nadal, he may be the future on Clay, at least, who knows? Dolgopolov may be succesful too since he's game is so unorthodox, he may catch a lot of people unprepared.

Well that's what I was trying to say in the first place.. for a set, and sometimes > a set he's able to play out of this world like tennis, what does make even Federer look bad. But he never had the ability to string more than 2 sets like that together, and especially in slams he then totally fades away. Granted, at the French he didn't win a set but he dominated at least the first two and then choked them away at the end. So that's was a slightly different performance.
