Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and [FONT=&quot]Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi will contend for the 2011 Sportsmanship Award named after Stefan Edberg. Mauro Cappiello, founder and admin of STE...fans, the best tribute to Stefan Edberg on the web, wrote this interesting editorial on who the ideal winner is.

Hmm, difficult. I agree with the article that the sportsmanship award should not equal the player of the year award.
For example, I don't think Djokovic did anything outstanding this year in terms of sportsmanship. Obviously, if you hardly ever lose a match, you have very few reason to lose your temper ... so it makes sense that the top players often collect these awards.
I hope Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi gets it, otherwise it really seems like it always goes to the #1.

However, the article loses a bit of credibility by writing stuff like:
In our opinion, it’s a scandal that sportsmen like Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick didn’t get a nominee. Still they are American, so from a nation that gets high visibility, and are ranked or have been ranked in the top ten.

It should go to Nole because every year #1 gets it only because he's #1 so this one shouldn't be exception I guess.

The annotation on Fish's and Roddick's nationality was ironic against the criteria used by the ATP for making the nominees. Thank you and everyone for commenting!

Honestly Djokovic for his chest bumps and primal screams. He took sportmanship to the extreme overcoming Nadal time delays, mto's, and injury excuses.

Djokovic outdone himself this year....another trophy he takes from Nadal's hands.

Fognini, for being subjected to a kangaroo court of condemnation in Paris only for him to prove genuinely injured.

Rafa - for letting Nole win 6 titles

This is a good point, Nadal may actually gain an advantage with this award because he was the runner-up in so many events this year. Also because he will probably retain the players who voted for him last year when he won it.

its a scandal that Nadal won it once, hopefully they don't make the same mistake again. Djokovic improved his beahvior this year and Roger was a class act as always so either of them is fine with me.

I think this award should be called Stefan Edberg Number 1 award..

People have won it in the past who are not famous for their sportsmanship if you know what I mean...

None of us who witnessed Stefan Edberg’s career needs to be reminded that Stefan never talked roughly to an umpire, never smashed a racquet in anger and never used a medical time out to escape a difficult score situation. That’s why the Sportsmanship Award was named after him and that’s why it should never be delivered to a player committing one of the above during a tennis season
Also, continuing teh above, Edberg never cried, or picked his butt, or thumped his chest or carried a handbag.

Roger got it for 2008 and 2003 when he wasn't no.1. Players before him have also got it irrespective of the ranking, I believe. But yes, it does seem to be ranking-centric these days.

Djerkovic nominated for a sportsmanship award? That has to be a joke.

Next you'll tell us that Isner is nominated for a "Little People of the Year" award.

Yep and next they'll tell us Federer is nominated for a "Small Nose of the Year" award. When will it ever end!

Federer has never done anything more ruinous than preen a bit in interviews, which is hardly a crime when you are the greatest ever. Never flouted the rules, bad-mouthed opponents, celebrated like a lunatic, grunted etc. He should be winning by a landslide every time. What a slap to Edberg's face to be considering the likes of Djokovic (and even Nadal, who may be a gracious loser, but still runs afoul of the rules).

Djokovic easily.

Who else applauds other players good shots and is genuinely a good sport?

Federer is respectful to Rafa but to everyone else he will just say he played a bad match. I haven't heard Fed give due credit to other players when he gets routed.

Please tell me that you are being sarcastic.

"After the mis-hit point, Djokovic mocked the crowd by raising his racket high and tapping the frame." - against Fed in the 2011 USO.

Oh yeah, real classy. The guy is despicable, and that was obviously in a match that he won.

Or how about this one, where he is winning, and all of a sudden he turns into a spoiled child:

It's obviously not hard to find examples of him acting like a total ******:

I honestly don't know how anyone can like this guy, even a little bit.

That's because Federer has accepted losing to Nadal and isn't so bothered by the losses. Djokovic on the other hand doesn't accept losing to anybody which is why he's #1.:)

He's also the world #1 and went and did what no other player had the balls to do....SINGLE-HANDEDLY SMASH THE DOMINATION OF FEDAL! If not for Djokovic, Nadal would be winning everything. At least be bloody thankful that we finally have a guy who doesn't tuck his tail and run from Nadal the way Federer and all the other clowns on the tour continue to do.

You obviously need to re-read the title of the thread.

We are talking about sportsmanship, something that Djerkovic doesn't even understand, much less exhibit. He is a cretin.
