Honest question, I'd like to poll the forum on this, and I haven't seen a thread on this for some reason.

No fanboy-ism from me here or anything. Really.

This is all-time, not just Open Era.

Sorry if I haven't included your pick, I don't mean it personally to you/them, I've just put in the guys who I think would be in the conversation, and you can only do ten options in the poll.

:)

Honestly? I think this doesn't exist. Tennis throughout the eras is not comparable, so much so that it is like a completely different sport. You can compare peers and players from similar eras, but beyond that comparisons yield nothing but fallacies IMO.

Seriously? A short ban will do you good. That's what starters of such threads deserve. A day in the sin-bin.

This is a very reasonable opinion really.

I think it is difficult to compare with the pre-Open Era especially.

You are not gonna get popular by making this thread. I don't mind it at all, but many just hate the discussion so I don't think you'll be getting discussions.

It has to be Sampras. He played during the strongest era of all time (1980-2002) and still improved when the competition did from 2000-2002.

A poll is not something I've seen before.

It's an interesting discussion if we avoid trollery and hate-filled posting.
Maybe I'm just trying to be more open-minded of late.

I know. :(

If people don't want to discuss this, then they should just not post on the thread in my view.

No-one is forcing them to, but folks always have to impose their will on others, don't they?

Some folks badly need to get a life.

Unfortunately I have not seen the other greats of yesteryear play. So can't say for sure. But from memory I did see Pete play superbly against Andre at Wimbledon and Federer's drubbing of Hewitt in the US Open. I really can't imagine tennis getting any better. So it's a tie. :)

I have been saying it too, it's really easy, if you hate a certain topic, then stay away and let others who wants to discuss it discuss. As I said, I don't mind this topic at all but many does and won't hesitate to ruin the thread, therefore it's hard to get at discussion except from a few.

If you want an answer from me, Roger Federer by miles.

A player who can play at the highest level ever seen is Djokovic. Saw that in opening set against fed yesterday and in 2011, plus other times too. On records it's federer.

I will put my opinion in too:

Obviously for me, an 18yo lifetime Fed fan, Federer springs to mind first and foremost, but I have been trying to take a more mature view of things in general the last few days, and I have been looking up some of the older pros today.

From this, I see that some of the older guys might be a bit underrated.
Many of them have tons of slams (especially if we include the Pro Slams as they were called), and it would also appear that slams weren't the be-all and end-all which they obviously are today.

Pancho Gonzales, a man I have seen mentioned here before but knew nothing about, seems to have been quite the tennis player from the looks of things, as does Rod Laver, and an American, Bill Tilden.

So maybe it isn't quite as clear cut as I first thought.
I've never claimed to be a tennis expert, guys!

So, I'd still say Federer for the Open Era only, maybe tied with Rafa and/or Pete depending on how you look at it, and for the pre-Open Era, I'd have to say Laver or Gonzales.

I will continue to look at the pre-Open Era players, it's a whole other era of tennis to examine when you get bored with the Open Era.

Hopefully I don't get red-carded for this innocent thread anyway. :)

Awesome.
In terms of level of play, he's in the discussion for sure, and in my opinion too.

The mature approach is to go along with what you are saying as it is unfair to compare achievements across the eras and as you say fallacies are created. However, much like a panel of experts can judge a gymnast's floor routine, so can tennis enthusiasts compare and give 'marks' for the best player.

Despite Federer having a comfortable lead on the achievements front, in my 30 years of watching tennis, never have I witnessed someone play with such effortless beauty and grace. Let people have their fun!

Federer for sure because of his consistency.

Djokovic showed the best tennis I've ever seen back in 2011 and brought tennis to a whole new level, but it was just one year. If he can repeat that this year or maybe 2016, he could be part of this discussion.

Maybe it was someone who used the search function and saw that there have been at least 500 Greatest ever threads in this section alone. Obviously it needed another one created by someone who knows about as much about the history of the game as a dung beetle knows about the life and works of Garcia Lorca.

I know you find me horrible, but this is one of the best insults I have read for quite some time. Haven't laughed at an an insult such as this one for quite some time either.

How has this thread not been deleted???

This response deserves 5 stars, thread itself, zero stars.

This thread goes nowhere unless you recognize the wonder of tennis AKA Patrick McEnroe.

How dare you leave him out of your poll.

You are a villain, sir. A villain.

Thanks.

But it's a poll, so I could literally be a dung beetle and the thread would be equally valid.
