Who do you think is/was more talented than Federer?

Federer was hailed by most to be the most talented tennis player ever. Some said that he might not be the best ever, but still the most talented. I do love the Federer game. It's beautiful yet effective. I understand that it takes supreme talent to be able to execute it consistently like Fed did.

When asked "who's the most talented ever?" I would say Federer without thinking for another second. But when I did think for another second, I thought maybe my liking the Federer game made my view on the subject a bit limited. Shortly, maybe I'm biased.

Okay, maybe you guys are biased too , but I still want to hear your opinions. Who do you regard is/was more talented than Federer?

Laver? McEnroe? Edberg? Sampras? Rios? Safin? Nalbandian? Nadal? or maybe Djokovic? Who????

Using an exhibition result? Give me a break...

The only real match between the two ended with Federer beating Sampras in an extremely close match. Sampras was probably closer to his prime than Federer was, and it was on his best surface. I'm not necessarily saying that Federer is more talented, but your argument is silly.

Remember,

Whenever you're looking at aesthetically pleasing athletes, you are looking at talent.

It does not matter what sport, Jordan, Comaneci or Mohammad Ali.

Now, we are talking pure athletism talent.

There are other types of talent such as tough mindedness( Nadal ) Speed (Nadal, Monfils) Prediction (Wozniacki) and so on..

Just because Feds strokes are "prettier" doesn't make him more talented.....

In fact All of Nadals strokes look like trick shots.

No one can duplicate Nadals strokes or Mcenroes strokes so they would be the most talented.

You fall in your own trap.

Not be able to duplicate has nothingto do with talent. Santoro's strokes were pretty unique as well.

You believe what pleases you. It's ok.

To me talent is what gives you less need for muscle. It's more brain than brawn.

Now you just consider how old they are, then compare their injury record.

Maybe you can get rid of your bias and get a clue, see it how it is.

Not likely.

I think it's too tough to say "GOAT" for any particular player. Maybe Pancho Gonzalez was the best of his day, but he was a pure amateur and never played on the tour. Maybe Rod Laver or Pete Sampras based on pure stats.

I think to really answer the question you have to take the player in context of the environment in which he played. Sampras was able to dominate in his day, although he had some notable rivals.

Federer dominated also, until Nadal came along, bringing forth one of the great rivalries of our sport - but I think he was the very best of his era.

I prefer to go by "eras" not stats - so that leaves room for Nadal and even Djokovic, if he keeps it up, to be the greatest.

I don't think this is about who is the greatest in general though, but who is the greatest in terms of pure talent.

McEnroe. Rarely practised, never went to the gym, and would have had a much longer stay at the top if tennis had stuck to wood rackets.

Nobody is more talented than Roger ,no argument about this, are you guys insane to even question it?
The second one, after Roger, I see almost as talented as Federer was Joachim Joahansson, but He was plagued by injuries, so He was never able to accomplish anything pretty much.

Wow, I did not know that. And he did so well against Borg, his volleying was such an amazing talent as well. Perhaps there is more than one person with more talent than Federer.

Never saw him play but I've heard Fabrice Santoro could do some pretty amazing things on a tennis court.

As a dark-horse candidate I'm going to say Bobby Riggs.
Certainly didn't win on physicality and didn't even need a racket to win matches (against suckers that he bet).

wasn't it pete sampras who said, that if every player that he played against would play their best tennis it would be michael stich to beat everybody? :)

I never saw Laver or any of the older players, but the only player that is close to Federer is Sampras. Mainly his serve shows this.

Mac and Fed both have unreal racket skills and hand-eye. Your right about the wood racket comment as well.
