Who had a bigger chance at dethroning Djokovic at AO in the last 5 years?

Alexander Zverev had chances to win 3 sets against Novak Djokovic, having a lead in 2 of the 3 sets he lost. He lost in 4 sets

Dominic Thiem started strongly leading 2 sets to 1 but couldn’t close the deal in the decider but lost in 5.

Who was a bigger threat to Nole and why? Please vote and discuss

For me - Alexander Zverev. That was his best chance to win his first major apart from the big choke at USO.
 
It doesn't matter if Zverev leads a set. He is bigger choker than Thiem. Thiem has a great game although inconsistent.

Zverev is a pathetic pusher who will lose serve when it would matter anyway.
 
Thiem was playing better than Djokovic to get the lead in 2020 and even out-hitting him. It was a surprise to see Djokovic find a way to turn it around.

With Zverev, you knew he would have problems with doublefaults on his serve at crucial moments especially after the 2020USO final debacle and fans kept waiting for the choke which duly happened.

While watching the matches, I thought Djokovic was done in 2020 after the third set while I never doubted he would win against Zverev in 2021.

That’s why the Rafa match was so overrated even though it never finished. He was not winning that match and we all knew it.

Doesn't matter if he didn't finish. He could legit straight up physically injure Nadal. Nadal was playing with many therapies. He had to win set 2 for this though. But it doesn't matter, in a finished match Nadal would have won because Zverev is a loser.

Zverev more talented than Thiem. Thiem mentally stronger.

Great points. I felt if Zverev won that third set in 2021 it would’ve been very interesting (he should really have won that set)
 
2020 Thiem had that dawg in him for a sec.
Djokovic's AO record is odd, because the conditions are great for many other player's games, not just his.
 
Zverev is miles worse mentally than Thiem. Therefore it is Thiem who had the best chance to dethrone Novak. Thiem actually had balls to compete with The Big 3 and finish them off in many matches on the biggest stages.

Zverev would probably choke 2:0 5:4 and his serve lead...

No-one had any expectations of Fed that day with the groin stuff and his poor form coming into the match, and he still managed to break everyone’s hearts all over again by blowing those BPs at 4-1 and failing to close out from 5-2

Thiem choked badly in reality during the 2020 AO especially the 4th and 5th sets.

I had multiple thousands on Novak that day so I was glad, but Domi let Djoko off the hook on countless big points with dumb errors.
 
Thiem's chances are a bit overrated. He took him to 5 but it was because he won like 4 or 5 games in a row at the end of the 2nd/beginning of the 3rd when Djokovic had a fight with the umpire and went off the match. The rest of the match was either close or Djokovic winning somewhat comfortably.

- Wins the 1st without much trouble
- It's close in the 2nd until 4-4 or so
- Thiem wins the 2nd and takes an early lead in the 3rd
- It's close the rest of the 3rd
- Djokovic wins the 4th and 5th without much trouble

I felt he was in more trouble against Simon in 2016, for instance. But he really hasn't been in much trouble when facing someone other than Wawrinka since 2012 when he had those epic back-to-back wins vs Murray and Nadal when he could have lost either of those, especially the SF. Since then it was only Wawrinka who troubled him in 2013 and obviously beat him in 2014 (excluding those slump years in 2017-2018).

The biggest chance I guess was Fritz because he was obviously hampered that match.
 
Thiem played some great ball but didn't think he was going to win even when 2-1 up.

Fritz is probably the biggest joke of a player. He had two players on the ropes TWO times. Novak in AO 2021 and Rafa in Wimbledon 2022. In fact both were carrying ab injury. Yet he failed miserably in both occasions.
