Who has the best chance of beating Serena?

At this point, the French Open is Serena Williams's tournament to lose. Sharapova stands very little chance against her. Azarenka might have a better shot if this was a hard court event, but it's clay so she has just as much chance as Sharapova. Errani or Kirilenko? Nah. But what about Jelena Jankovic?

Yes, I think that of all players left in the draw, Jankovic is the one with the best chance of beating Serena. She has a more respectable head-to-head record (4-6) against Williams and has played her tough even in many of her losses. Only two losses were blow-outs.

The trouble is that she would have to go through Sharapova first and, likely, Azarenka next. She is only 1-5 against Sharapova, having lost the last 4 times. Her last win over Maria was in 2007. She is 3-4 against Azarenka but has lost the last 3 times, all in straight sets. However, I do think she is playing at a better level now than she was during her recent losses to Maria and Vika. Also, none of those losses occurred on a clay court.

Still, it is a curious thing that she somehow matches up better against Serena than she does against Vika and Maria. If she can somehow beat them and get to the final against Serena, it would probably be the best chance for us to at least see a competitive final. Serena would undoubtedly still be favored but maybe Jankovic can take it to three sets or keep each set close in score.

Best chance? We're talking such small odds at this point that there is virtually no difference between any of Serena's opponents.

The player with the biggest chance of beating Serena... is herself.

That is the only way someone else will win.

I am surprised to learn that Janko is 4-6 against Serena, but I'm not in the least bit worried about her: first of all, as you pointed out, she has to get to play her, no small feat, and even if she DID, if she couldn't manage to win a Slam when she was "Number One"-I've forgotten, did she even get to a Slam final, let alone win it?-she sure as hell ain't gonna be able to cope with the pressure of winning one now, particularly against Serena. Nope, Serena's toughest test was today, she was THISCLOSE to being down 2 service breaks, but as that crucial 2-0 game kept going and going, I thought, whoever wins THIS game wins the match, Kuzzy isn't gonna be able to nurse a single service break all the way home, and so it came to pass...

Serena won her last two matches against Jelena Jankovic on grass (63 61) and clay (36 60 62). They were crushing wins for Serena. IMO, Serena has already overcome her biggest threat in the tournament (Kuznetsova).

If Sharapova continues to play like an idiot she wont stand a chance. If she would be a bit smarter and use a strategy rather than brainless ball bashing she would have a good chance.

She's in good form and she has won FO before...

What strategy would she use to give her much of chance? She hits hard, but Serena hits just as hard, if not harder. Is she suddenly gotta start slicing and dicing, and throwing in drop shots? Serena's best stroke is her serve and it is arguably Shreikapova's worst, not just from leading the WTA in doubles the last few years, but even some of the seconds that land in get sent back "with interest." This has "bad matchup" written all over it, and the dozen straight losses reflect that.

Azarenka can outplay Serena. No telling if she would or not - probably 50/50. Thing is, there is a good chance she could lose to Sharapova, which Serena would love. Not saying Sharapova wouldn't have any chance versus SW, but the odds are big against her.
