Sharapova, is like watching porn
Michelle Larcher De Brito's was in another league when she first came up. Kirilenko, Schiavone up there as well. Errani's is obnoxious as well. How can Venus not be on this list?
they should wear shock collars. if their shriek/scream/banshee holler is too loud... zappo
I remember Kirilenko didn't grunt at all when she first started. The female grunting is simply gamesmanship and it's really irritating. They even grunt on volleys and I've seen some grunt on dropshots or other light shots! Serena was one of the worst howlers and she's toned it down considerably since her younger days. The WTA really needs to do something about it becuase it's getting worse and worse, plus cases like Serena, Kirilenko, and Sharapova (apparently, she doesn't grunt in practice, only in matches) prove that it's all intentional.
Michelle Larcher de Brito
She's friggin hilarious.
All of them are ridiculous but Sharapova's just gets on my nerves more than the others. The only grunt I ever liked was Monica's. The Seles grunt was fun - the louder she got the harder she hit.
Where's the "All of the above" option?
Serena's actually is the only one that makes senes to me. Her matches normally start out gruntless but the more tired she gets the more she grunts as she is seemingly exerting more energy. Pova/Aza and that grunting out of the gate crew drive me crazy. Aza's is my least favorite as it just sounds like a dying animal or something.
Go to YouTube, type in "Valeria Savinykh", prepare for horror.
But Sharapova is the worst. And all the "come ons", winning a 40-0 game in the first set.
Monica Seles grunting bothered me a whole lot more than any of the current crop.
No it only proves that it is usually stress-related. In practice, the stress factor is much lower -- hence less grunting/shrieking. However, Vika makes sounds during practice as well as during play. OTOH, I have seen Sharapova relatively quiet during the 1st set but as the match wears on she becomes more vocal -- could be stress or exertion over a longer period.
During practice, I saw Michelle Larcher De Brito and several other players stayed relatively quiet when they first started. However, after 30 mins or so, they were all making a lot of noise as the exertion level increased.
Note that some on some dropshots, the racket head speed is still fairly fast. The players are still exhaling on the forward swing of a dropshot. The grunt is a manifestation of forced exhalation. Quite often the loud exhalation happens because it is a habit that has developed & continued for quite a few years. Turning it off when stressed or during periods of extended exertion is not a simple matter.
After her SF match, Seles was asked to stifle her load grunting for the Wimbledon final (92, I believe). The result was disastrous. She had a great run to the final (beating Martin N in the QF or SF). However, due in large part to her muted play, she folded 2-6, 1-6 in her final with Graf. She reported later than she felt very uncomfortable and unable to concentrate because of her efforts to squelch her grunting. She proclaimed that she was never be coerced to do that again.
Safina by a long shot. Every grunt feels like a dagger in the heart
Azarenka is the most annoying in women's tennis. Its not sexy, its tiring, cheating, and she looks like...we never mind.
Sharapova is sexy and sounds less bad, but she needs to tone it down as well.
Ivanovic. I absolutely hate her whiny voice, and her grunts are simply unbearable.
I wouldnt really call Azarenka's grunt a grunt. She sounds more like a demented owl. I can understand a grunt occuring when extreme effort is made, but it seems to happen with every shot, but never in the warm up. Personally I think its gamesmanship and don't like. Other female players seem to be able to hit the ball just as hard or harder and make no sound at all.
Sharapova by far, I don't watch any of her matches because of it. Azarenka's shrieking doesn't bother me as much, though it is still annoying.
The most annoying in my opinion is definitely Jovanovski's, when she unleashes it to full potential, which is not always the case.
Yeah tough call between Jovanovski and Azarenka. At it's peak Jovanovski's is unberable, but Azarenka is more consistently annoying because she grunts on (or seems more like after) every shot and each grunt lasts longer
On the flip side, maybe Seles' opponents felt "uncomfortable and unable to concentrate" because of her grunts. I wonder if she ever considered that?
ESPN classic recently showed Sharapovas 1st victory at Wimbledon ove Serena and she didnt squeel or grunt the entire match. All of them are annoying but I think Kuznetsovas is actually the worst. I have to mute it when she plays.
Shoot me down but I think it's pure gamesmanship. They don't even sound like a grunt associated with effort. Plenty of other players apply the same effort without shrieking.
I think you are wrong about that. It has quite a bit to do with effort and/or stress. Yes, it is true that many other players can apply the same effort with much less sonics. It is a matter of learning a breathing technique that minimizes the grunts/sounds. It could take quite a few months or more to unlearn something like this that these "offenders" have been doing for many years.
I'm sure that this is undoubtedly true. Some can tune it out while others may find it difficult to do so. It cam be unsettling. Also, if the grunt sound coincides with the ball contact sound, then the grunter is, in effect, masking the sound of their contact -- whether that is the intent or not.
For me it's a tie between Azarenka and Sharapova. These two are setting a horrible example for grunting on the WTA and most young players have adopted this silly form of games(wo)manship.
Bojana Jovanowski is a contender for the crown as well.
Despite him being a man, I feel a special mention needs to go to Marcel Granollers for his WTA like howling.
Speak for yourself. Ivanovic sounds like she's having an orgasm. Fine by me.
Azarenka's sounds like a quiet, shortened climax. I like it.
Shaparova sounds like giving birth.
They measured the decibels back in the day and Larcher de Brito was the loudest, iirc.
That said, the tone of the grunt gets to me more than the pure volume. As such, I think Azarenka is the most annoying.
I would have to say Azarenka. She grunts until the ball touches the ground.
Who's is Jovanowski???
It is gamesmanship (or rather, gameswomanship) taken to the freakin' extreme. It is naive to think otherwise. How did generations of players did it without wailing?
Yes, I do believe that if one has learned to play while screaming like a dying zombie (do zombies actually die?) it may take them a while to unlearn.
Anyway, it will not change until people start voting with their wallets and stop attending these shriekfests. Until then, good luck
Shriekapova by a landslide. Azarenka's is the weirdest, sounds like an owl but it's also more modulated and less grating.
Listen to Jaksic's grunting, very unique sound. :???:
Azarenka by far.
At least with Maria you get eye candy there.
Nothing with Azarenka.
Serena Williams. She's like one big fugly package,no wonder Nards like her.
Atleast Vika and Maria are somewhat attractive, especially the latter.
Michelle Larcher de Brito is worth a mention...
All these guys. That's maybe the reason I'd rather have S. Williams win. Her shutting down her howling opponents is so good.
Why, why, why. What coach teaches this crap?!
ERANNI. Hands down.
"EHHHHH!". "EHHHHHHHHH!". "EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!."
The fact she looks like a slightly bigger version of that midget in Austin Powers only makes the whole experience more grating.
Every time I see her playing I either chnage the channel or mute the tv. Can't stand that terrible grunt.
Sexiest grunt goes to Ivanovic.
seles my favourite
followed by capriati
Azarenka's grunt often lasts to the point of her opponent's contact, and it really annoys me. Maria's grunt doesn't bother me, but it may be because I like her as a person.
Soundwave clips of Victoria Azarenka, left, and Maria Sharapova, right, showing the decibel levels of their respective shrieks. Sharapova's reaches 105 decibels and Azarenka's 95, but the Belarussian's has a longer duration. Photograph: Guardian
