Who here likes to play with BM?

I've been playing with Black Mambra recently and I enjoy it. Inexpensive, tough to string with though  Nice and stiff. String it at 61/62.

Dang, you string at some high tension. My arm and wrist would not be able to take that. Have you ever tried a lower tension?

Yes I tried #40, and it didn't work for me :( I hit with topspin and use a 2HBH so it doesn't seem to hurt me. I usually have to restring after a couple hours w/ poly which is why I'm trying other types of string.

that is VERY high for a stiff string like BM. I'd take it down to mid 50s at least a maybe experiment with JET stringing a bit to see if you can distribute the tension loss more evenly throughout the frame as you play.

Remind me again, what frame are you using?
Mamba does it's thing best at lower tensions.
Maybe you need a frame that gives you a stiffer overall stringbed.

think he's using the k factor ksurge tweener stick. i don't think the frame is the issue. in his other thread, he says he hits w/ lots of topspin and used an 18g nylon string but has never broken it.

yep, and I'm thinking of going back to nylon. I have some on order right now.

However, I love the feel of BM at #61/62 for about 3 hours. Love it. Absolutely love it. Then it dies :(

Oh, IDK. A Blade 98?
Just my $.02

Dude, before you go 'back to nylon'. Try Red Alert. It's smarter than your average syngut.

"That's OK, Boo-Boo."

i've never tried it at the tension you're stringing it at but i have tried it much lower and found Black Mamba to be a solid performing econo poly for those who want very good poly performance a a bargain basement price.

where in SoCal are you located? i would love to meet up and hit sometime to see why you're having to string your polys so high to get the best performance. something sounds off when a hard hitter generating lots of topspin isn't breaking 18g nylon in 1-2 hrs. every hard hitter who hits w/ moderate to high levels of top don't use 17 or 16g nylon or syn gut simply because they'd be restringing after every one or two hitting sessions.

Yes. I love Syn gut but it moves and breaks for me rather fast. Depends on who I hit with as well, but if it is me against another spin hitter its going in around 3-4 hours.

Also if you hit with a lot of topsin and don't hit through the ball like you claim, then lower tension poly would be much better for your strokes. So once again, something does not make sense here.

i can hit well w/ syn gut, but it only lasts me 3-4 hours when i'm hitting w/ JGads (heavy spin and pace) or one of my other hitting partners who hits w/ a bit more pace and heavy spin but a tad less spin than Gads.

agree w/ the 2nd part of your post. to generate heavy spin AND pace you must hit through the ball. this type of shot can't be achieved by simply brushing up on the ball especially w/ a poly string bed strung in the 60s.

Yeah I don't hit a very fast ball, just one with lots of spin. Not just deep topspin forehands but slice backhands, crazy slice forehands that move sideways through the air, topspin lobs, passing shots that can curve around the opponent, etc. I love spin.

I've never said I'm a "big hitter" just that I put lots and lots of spin on my balls.

from http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showpost.php?p=6508188&postcount=1

So I've been trying to make the switch to poly for the past month or so. I guess I'm a big goofball when it comes to strings because for the life of me -- and as I've posted many times here -- I simply can't tell the difference in play between different poly strings, and I've tried 5 or 6 so far.

However, I can tell the difference between a new poly and one that's been used even for just a couple of hours. In fact I can almost feel the stuff stretching out as I play. My balls fly long and I have much more power, but far less control.

I've been stringing full beds of poly at 62 lbs on a stiff, light frame (68 stiffness, 10.75oz strung). I swing hard and fast with lots of topspin. When the poly is new I can hit that way and balls spin down and in. When the poly is only a couple of hours old they fly long and I have to hit a flatter shot (with admittedly more power).

So I have the following questions:

I hear that poly goes "dead" but for me it comes alive -- way too alive. Is this normal or is this just another thing about poly I'm not grasping? It does not feel "dead" to me, it feels like a trampoline. It doesn't feel bad, it's just too powerful.

Second, I hear people saying that poly goes bad within 10 hours of playing or two weeks of sitting. However, the types I've been using (which admittedly are not Luxilon) go bad within 3 hours MAX. I can hear the difference in the twangy buzz noise when the racquet hits the ball that develops over time. Is this normal? 2-3 hours? Really?

Third, how in the world do people who don't string their own racquets use this stuff? It seems like they'd be in the pro shop every few days. I can't imagine someone could leave it on their racquet UNLESS it tends to stretch out to a certain extent and then stops stretching and they just get used to the stretched version and continue playing with it.

I really don't want to go back to syn gut. I'm not a string breaker at all but I do love the feel of fresh poly. But then again I don't want to spend more time stringing than playing. Not exactly sure what to do.

if you're swinging hard and fast, the result should be a heavy ball w/ lots of spin. unless you're arming the ball rather than swinging the dozu "human" racquet.

syn gut at really high tensions (like 65ish)?...just a thought...

you're brushing the ball which explains why all poly strings feel the same to you and why you don't care about ball pocketing.

That much is true, I swing hard and fast. Doesn't mean I hit a hard ball, you see.

you're brushing the ball which explains why all poly strings feel the same to you and why you don't care about ball pocketing.
Now y'all are starting to get it. :)

I swing hard and fast and hit the ball at such an extreme angle that all my swing speed goes into spin, not pace.

And that's why, if the ball "pockets" in any meaningful way, it gets launched into the bleachers.

And this, Wuppy, is why you get some grief about your assertions.

I say this with all the kindness in my heart, but you are describing things in a rather inexperienced way. Not that you are an inexperienced player, but perhaps you have not had the opportunity to consider that you may still be thinking about things like one.

It does not take "hard and fast" to create racquet head speed. Most of that happens in the whip.

If you slow down and let the pocketing do some of the work, you may find you hit a much heavier ball. But I know that is hard to do because the is a certain feeling to swinging with everything you've got. But if you are accurately describing your swing and contact with the ball then you cannot possibly have as much control as you could/should.

If pocketing is launching the ball, then that is swing mechanics, not speed.

I hope you take that in the spirit that it is intended...

Mamba, well stated.

And I play with a guy who hits with that type of spin and is really good at it. He uses a Head crossbow strung low at 48#s with poly. The low tension only helps with the spin.

That's very sweet of you, Mamba Corporation.

That would be awesome if I wanted to do that. I'm not really interested in "heavy balls."

then you cannot possibly have as much control as you could/should.
Which is why I like my strings very tight ;)

If pocketing is launching the ball, then that is swing mechanics, not speed.
Can't argue with that. I've never professed to be anything other than a 3.5 player (though a pro told me my swing looks like a 4.0). That is all.
