Assuming at their peaks. One has one of the strongest single backhands of all time the other one of the strongest serves. Who is overall (physically) stronger though??

If by "peak" we mean the best a player can play; Wawrinka may be the best "peak" player ever. When he was on, Wawrinka was untouchable. Unfortunately, Wawrinka's peaks came in points and sometimes games or sets but almost never for an entire tournament never mind for an entire season.

Roddick on grass and medium/fast HC. Stan on slow HC and clay. Ergo, Stan AO and RG, ARod Wim and USO, YEC depends on conditions.

I think that Roddick is close to Stan on hard courts. Roddick won a Master's in Miami in 2010. The only set that he dropped was to Peak Nadal along the way. Of course, Stan has two hard court slams. So your analysis is a good one. However, does peak Stan win a slam from 2004-2009 with Fed in the way. That's tough to say.

This one is so tough. Stan played Peak Djokovic quite tough. On the other hand, Stan matches up horribly against Fed away from clay. Either way, I think that you answer is the best one yet. I cannot dispute anything that you stated. Nice post, amigo.

Wawrinka's peak resulted in 3 Slams whilst Roddick's only netted him 1 so have to go with Stan here.

I agree - although to an extent it’s about matchups, and specifically Stan vs Novak Djokovic and Federer. If Stan had peaked in the Fed era rather than the Novak Djokovic era, he may have only won 1 slam also.

Not so good try to buff poor poor RodDick :sneaky:
Wawa is better both in accomplishments and peak level...

I think Stan has the higher peak, but if they played head to head, Roddick wins everywhere but clay.

Roddick was my favorite. I dont share the idea that Wawrinka is overal the better player. He got his chances, he took them or more so earned them. This said, Wawrinka would win plenty of matches against Andy out of clay. For example, he completely destroyed him at AO 11, long before Norman got into the picture.

I believe that they are in a similar tier of overal level but one did win more than the other.

And stop with this "peak" level nonsence. Using this logic, Wawrinka is unbeatble when playing at his best ...

This pretty much nails the issue, but overall peak Wawrinka a much higherer peak. Wawrinka's return not the best, but Roddick very marginal player on return and of course not even close in rallies with the Big 4 for the most part. I liked early Roddick before Poly strings saturated the tour and forced him to retool his forehand. Just too slow to compete with the best. Wawrinka can take out the best of all time from the ground. Pushdick might not be in the top 1000 all time for his baseline game (see his return stats for a measure of this).... 20.3% return games won which is #317 since 1991.

On grass there is no way Wawa is beating A-Rod. On clay it's a whitewash for the Swiss. On HC I'll give it to Stanimal 60/40.

I take Roddick 03-05 over Wawrinka 14-16.

I mean, common now. Roddick made 6 SF, 3 F and won 1 but was blocked by Federer in 2 finals and semi. He also made 5 Masters Finals winning 3. So that second part blows away Stan.
Roddick had a better H2H vs all of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer, despite being older than the former 2

H2H vs Federer

Roddick 3-21
Wawrinka 3-22

QUOD ERAT DEMONSTRANDUM
So you are penalizing Wawrinka because he has played one more match against Federer. What makes you think Roddick would have defeated Federer had he faced him in another match?

H2H vs Federer
Roddick 3-21
Wawrinka 3-22

Wawrinka, no doubt. He defeated prime Djokovic in 3 Grand Slam matches (AO 2014, RG 2015 and USO 2016). Roddick never defeated prime Federer in any Grand Slam match.
