Llodra, no question about it ! I can't even remember him dumping a single volley on the net or long in all the matches I've watched.

Hewitt, the mans won a Doubles Grand Slam for a reason, exceptional at the net, even though he doesn't go there often.

now I am going to surprise you.

I think at the moment, nole is the best net player in the game.

he simply does not miss anymore.

yes but if you put wawrinka in the discussion then you'll put tons of players, including isner, kohlschreiber, berlocq, dodig, tsonga, youzhny, haas...

by the way Gasquet's volley is underrated

I was looking at some Sampras videos the other day and think how many lightyears he is above ANY modern players at the net. Sampras wasn't even exceptional at the net compared to many of his peers and predecessors.

Spot on.It is simply just another different sport right now.

agreed. gasquet is not too shabby at the net.

you really don't get to see too much of anybody's net game besides llodra and radek, so if only through sheer repetition, they probably do get the nod. but come to think of it, yeah, gasquet has some really good hands up there. he really is a talented guy, it's just that his game isn't quite a consistent winning formula against the way things go down at the very highest level these days.

To me Sampras's volley was just fantastic, maybe Edberg was better but the margin was not that big IMO.

Net play aren't frequently play today but that doesn't mean they aren't good or lack of capability. Given a right condition and having a chance to play more from the net, there bound to be another Mac, Edberg and many great net players.

I almost want to say nobody. Elite net players don't exist any more. Stepanek and Llodra can be alright. A number of others have the fundamentals.

Paes and a ton of other doubles players.
McEnroe even in his 50's is better at the net than most ATP top 100 singles players these days.

Llodra. The guy is a joy to watch at the net, although he can't touch the greats of the past like Edberg, Sampras, Mac.

Hewitt by a mile, nobody comes close. Federer only comes in if he isn't playing against a top 10 player. Nadal, Djokovic and Murray only if they are forced into the net. Hewitt grew up on fast grass in Australia.

If a baseliner like Hewitt happens to be the best net player...well, Houston, we have a problem.

Guys, volleys do not encompass all of net play. Just because a player has good hands or can hit great volleys doesn't mean they're adept at net. Some of the best net players don't have the best volleys, but they make up for it with their tactics or movement or approaches. Roddick for example. Good volleys, awful approaches. Not that great of a net player. Nadal, subpar volleys (He can't even hit a drive volley), yet he chooses to approach when he's perfectly set up to win the point with an easy volley or smash. Therefore, IMO, he's a better net player than roddick.

Llodra.

Hewitt? I think there are a few better than him. Don't get fooled by doubles success. A lot of singles players can do damage in doubles if for some reason they would really try. Are Berdych or Verdasco that good at the net in singles? The dynamics are different and net skills might not translate from doubles to singles.

Agree 100% with the bolded. People dog on Roddick constantly for being a naff volleyer, but I think his volleys were actually pretty decent. He just possessed a non-existent transition game.

Unfortunately, in addition to this, his ground game wasn't good enough to roll with the big boys. So he tried to make up for this by making all these weird-*** net approaches mid rally, and ended up getting passed like a fool.

Top 4 are all very good, they just don't volley much. I think Federer is the best by a good margin, however the guys like Llodra and Stepanek are very good as well. You have to understand that approach shots create the opportunity to come to net and that is why I think the Top 4 are better than Stepanek/Llodra. Roddick actually had very good volleying skills just terrible approach shots. I remember watching Wimbledon 09 and he was coming up with some insane volleys against Murray and Hewitt and even Fed in the finals.
