No way. All the RG F's mean something; he was clearly the 2nd best on clay all those years. You can't say that (being #1 or #2) about Nadal on hard except for 1 year.

The irony is that in 2009 Fed was better on clay and grass than Nadal, but Nadal was better on HC. Strange times.

That speaks of consistency, which is not all there's to consider when talking about how good a player is, or who's better for that matter.

Well, this might have a different answer if Davydenko weren't such a headcase and could have maintained his elite level.

I do think Davydenko in form is a better hardcourt player than Nadal and all but 3-5 players on tour, but in terms of over the course of a career, it's no contest.

So, no credit for consistency, huh? All you RNadal fanboys love to brag about is the H2H which is certainly against RFederer.

There are 2 hard court slams, so Nadal had twice as many opportunities. If there were 2 RGs played, Federer would have 2 slams and 10 finals.

if if if if ...

if there was 2 GS on clay, Nadal would have more grand slams by now than Federer

yes exactly... but actually Nadal has been a tougher opponent for Federer on grass and you know that ;)

anyway, this "if" discussion is pointless :p

With all the trouble Nadal was giving Fed, Fed still managed to win 17 majors and 302 weeks. Isn't that impressive?

Fed was unlucky he had to play an undisputed surface goat. Sampras and Borg didn't have to play anyone close to Nadals level on clay.

Without Rafa, Fed has 22 majors and 2 CYGS. Also 3-4 RG.

continuing this "if" discussion i see ?

Voting Davydenko for the luls to make it an even 30-30, obviously Nadal is the superior hardcourt player.

Why aren't Nadal fans vote for Davydenko? Their theory is H2H tells the whole story, so Davy should be their pick without any hesitation.

Hypocrisy at its best

I voted for Davydenko but not because of the h2h. I believe Davydanko's technique on hard court is superior in general and he understands the surface very well and constructed his game around it. But he didn't have even consistency to claim slams plus it doesn't help when a player like Federer dominates in the same era. Besides, most of the top 50 are very comfortable and familiar with hard courts which makes it difficult for anybody to win HC masters or slams. However, Nadal has more titles, slams and masters on HC than Davydenko. That's not because he is the better HC player. He is just a supremely talented player who could adjust his game over the years to win titles. When it comes to fine tuning one's capability for a specific surface or player, no one comes up with a better strategy than Nadal (and also his staff). Other than that, his incredible movement, pin point accuracy, consistency and execution are something that a common top 20 player do not usually have.

They put weight on H2H win/loss record more than any other criteria. In their eyes, Davy is a better hard court player, but don't want to admit it.

They may actually believe H2H is the most important, a lot of Nadal fans are not proper tennis fans. Also blind support of Nadal may cloud their views, they need H2H to be very important as that is what Rafa has.

This thread may actually open the eyes of many Rafa fans.

Yes of course. I also don't see any nadal fangirls posting in thread because they know their hypocrisy has been called out.

Really interesting poll. I though there will be no doubt that Nadal is a better HC player, even though Davydenko was a hard match-up for him

Since Soderling is better clay court player than Djokovic according to many here, than Davydenko must be better hard court player than Nadal.

Yes on one hand they want to be rational and vote for Nadal but on the other hand they know that they will lose their H2H argument if they vote for their boy. ..Tough times.

H2H is everything to them yet being inferior to NDavydenko on the most important surface would be a huge blow to RNadal's legacy.

Is this a joke? Davy has never even made a slam final on hard or made a big upset in a slam either for that matter.

Having won both hardcourt Slams and more hardcourt Masters than Davydenko, Nadal is clearly the better overall hardcourt player than Davydenko who has won no hardcourt Slams and fewer hardcourt Masters, despite a WTF title.

However, as their personal H2H on hardcourt clearly favours Davydenko (6-1), we can say that Davydenko is clearly better at playing Nadal on hardcourt than Nadal is at playing Davydenko on hardcourt!

Yes he was dominated by a player who didn't even win a major...How can such a player be considered GOAT? :-?

If RNadal is inferior to NDavydenko on the most important surface it isn't good for him.

How can the GOAT be the third best player of his generation on the most competitive surface behind NDjokovic and AMurray.

Hard courts are the newest court, doesn't make them superior. That's just your subjective opinion.

when davydenko was on top of his game he was a better player than nadal on hard court.

only exceptions being when nadal served 135 to win the us open.

and of course davydenko has fallen on hard times recently.

what hurt davydenko in slams is the seeding. especially when he got stuck in the 5-6th seed it is a huge disadvantage vs the top 4 seeds. (seriously go look how many time he had to play soderling in the quarters or round of 15). and also davydenko serve used to wear out in slams. best 2-3 tourneys he could serve 128+ the entire week in slams he used to always be at 118 by the quarters.

But he dominated Nadal in H2H. How can Nadal be a better hc player when got owned 6-1.

This logic is dumb. Nadal "owns" Fed 6-2 on outdoor hardcourt, yet no sane Nadal fan claims Nadal is a better outdoor hardcourt player than Federer, because Fed's outdoor hardcourt accomplishments at slam level are so much stronger. What we take from the outdoor H2H (and Nadal's outdoor hardcourt record overall), is that Nadal is an excellent outdoor hardcourter that can beat anyone on his day (even Fed), despite hardcourts being his weakest surface. He could also lose to any player on his day (at least before he matured on the surface), and was for years an inconsistent hardcourt player, despite his ability to win big on the surface. Nadal has beaten Djokovic, an all-time great hardcourt player in a hardcourt slam final, so the fact that he could also beat Fed on outdoor hardcourts shouldn't come as a surprise.

The totality of the H2H, and the huge sampling of matches Fed and Nadal played (30 in all, 20 to Nadal, 8-2 at slams)) tells us that Nadal is the overall better TENNIS player, even though Nadal and Fed both have their prefeerred surfaces. The totality of the Nadal/Davy H2H (5-6) only says that he was not a major rival and gave Nadal a tough time outside major events, nothing more, nothing less. Ignoring context is pretty desperate.

If Davy Had a 6-1 hardcourt record over Nadal at slams, no one would hesitate to say Davy is better. The greatest players peak for slams. It's why Davy is not considered a great player. The 8-2 record at slams between Nadal and Fed is ugly, and he got wins on every surface,

It's not Fed fans or any sane fans logic but Nadal fans logic.

EVery match count except exhibition or charity. Fact is Davy owns Nadal on hard court.

What nonsense. Read the OP post. Davy v Rafa proves the match ups play a role in H2H.

Why does Nole have a better record v Rafa than Roger does?

I believe it to be the most competitive surface, a lot of players struggle on clay and to a lesser extent grass, the field is deeper on hardcourts.

AMurray is an example great player but on clay is a non-factor.

Sure there are other guys who thrive on clay but it doesn't compensate.
