Who is the fittest player on the ATP tour?

I'm curious if there is any consensus about this. I was always under the impression that Djokovic has been the most fit player on tour since his breakout season in 2011, although I suspect some will say Nadal tops him yet. I think Murray's fitness level is criminally underrated, and people also underestimate the fitness levels of players such as Ferrer. When I use the term fitness, as it relates to tennis, I am talking not only about stamina and endurance, but also speed, strength, and build.

I think Nadal was fitter than Djokovic in terms of being able to last on the court in 2013 and probably about equal for the time he competed in 2012. 2014? Nadal's legs aren't answering the call. It's not that Nadal isn't fit, it's that Nole is grinding him down with superior physicality and also tactics. Look at the Miami final as well as the Rome final and how Nadal got slightly more sluggish as the matches wore on. Nole's combination of incredible fitness and superb all around and rally-controlling game is knocking Nadal for six right now.

Nole is currently the fittest player on tour.

Other candidates are Nadal and Ferrer. Murray's fitness is curiously lacking ever since his injury problems. I didn't think it would take him so many months to even begin to find some pure stamina and endurance but he's struggling like hell.

Ferrer, Nadal, or Djokovic, IMO. Murray is not as natural an athlete as them.

I agree with you, in principle. I started doubting this after Wimbledon last year when Murray absolutely dismantled Djokovic in the Final. Granted, Djokovic had just endured a physically draining 5 setter v. DelPo but Murray looked MUCH more fit during that match. Also Murray seemed to have a bit more left in the tank and the end of the USO 2012 Final.

I say all that while still agreeing Djokovic is the standard here.

Agree about Murray not being as natural an athlete as Nadal, Djokovic, Ferrer, and also not as natural as Federer either (shouldn't forget just what an athlete he is despite his advancing athletic age).

Simon is a cool pick.

I guess it depends on how we are defining 'fitness'. I define it to exclude chronic or serious injuries. That is why I had to opt for Djokovic as the fittest player on tour. Murray has been incredibly fit for much of his career but has lately been injury prone to the point of requiring surgery. This has inevitablty affected his current fitness levels.

But for how long will that last. Frankly I'm surprised that he's still showing such clear signs of exhaustion in longer 3 set matches. Slams are best of 5.

He looked a bit fitter and more like his old self in Rome. So I'm optimistic he will be in better shape for RG.

I think RG is too soon for him and he'll still be found wanting deep into a long match against a top player or maybe even a top 20 ranker.

Maybe Wimbledon... Obviously the sooner the better though so I hope you're on the money.

Right now, the swiss doping duo, Fed and Wawa...

Oh boy, oh boy.

Ferrer is a popular choice here and it makes sense. He's rarely gassed and on the occasions he is it's because his opponent simply bossed the game and made him do way more of the running. He's hard to put away.

Obviously not Murray right now given how he lost in Rome vs Nadal who had much longer first couple of matches. Maybe in 2012 Murray was a beast but not now.

Federer is easily the fittest player on the planet. He never sweats and he's always super fast at the end of matches.

Djokovic is certainly the fittest. IMO he has the ideal physique for tennis in terms of height, body size, and muscle mass. He also seldom gets injured considering the physicality of his game, and has a very healthy diet and lifestyle in general.

Federer also deserves an honourable mention, considering his habit of making what is a very physical activity seem effortless, in addition to his longevity and lack of serious injuries.

Nadal gets injured too much for consideration, and Ferrer smokes.

This is irrelevant to his fitness though, the guy is what, almost 33? And an absolute BEAST. You WILL have to work to beat Ferrer, that's for sure.

Man, I have heard that Ferrer smokes cigs for years and never have I even seen a picture or video of it. It's ridiculous. Is this a rumor or legit?

Yeah, yeah Ferrer is a beast. What about Federer though. I mean, is this guy even human? I've seen alot of his matches through the years, but I've never seen him get tired! Rarely pants or sweats. Even when it's like 100 degrees he might have like a little sweat on his forehead..wtf

He doesn't sweat much compared to many pros. Djokovic is the best in this regard. His clothes look fresh even after long matches. Maybe its the Uniqlo quality.

As for never being tired? I beg to differ. Their have been numerous matches in his career where he has been worn out. He is very good with keeping the antics to a minimum when he is tired. Now Novak, he will let everyone know he is tired; He yanks out the cross around his neck, yells to heavens, stumbles around after mishitting groundstrokes :). Its kind of a funny site to behold.

It's called Spanish coffee - Sports Blend, available to all professional Spanish athletes.

Very efficient after 30y lol (Ferrer, Robredo etc) unless you have been drinking too much of it for too long and it doesn't work anymore around 28y old

Good point, Federer gives little away so its hard to tell of he's tired or not. I also think that his relaxed, efficient movement lends a lot to his endurance. He doesn't waste energy muscling around the court. Novak is real efficient too, but is opposite w/ his demeaner in that he exaggerates everything he's feeling. Looks like he's had it then starts running like an antelope on next point!

Ferrer is on PEDs, right. Plus I can't stand anyone that abuses the lines people for any reason. I used to like Ferrer until I heard that.

Nadal. I have never seen him tired in last 2 years.

Cant be Nadal. He is always tired, hurt, fatigued, injured, tired from playing too much or fatigued from playing too little. Its a wonder the success he has had given his fragile body and diminished cardio capacity.

Only thing was, he was never tired or injured during the clay season. :)

.....til he lost to Djokjer in Rome last week, then he was 'tired'.
