Russia is officially part of both Europe and Asia, continent-wise.
European Russia is west of the Ural mountains. Asian Russia is east of the Ural mountains. The Caucasus in the south of Russia, and which also includes the countries of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, create a lot of debate as to whether they are in Europe or in Asia, as they are west of the Ural mountains (an argument in favour of Europe) but also so south geographically that they are almost (or are) in the Middle East.

The Ural mountains line below:

The vast majority of the major Russian cities that we think of, such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Sochi etc. are European. The most famous Russian city in Asia is Vladivostok, which is way out east.

My more general point is that when people say Asian they think Chinese or thereabouts, so the whole term is a bit useless in the tennis context.

Chang is an American and won his titles as an American so why he needs to be seen as an 'Asian great' is a mystery to me.
The "Mystery" is solved...

The US Census Bureau classifies people as Asian if they have origins or ancestry in East, South, or Southeast Asia. The Census Bureau revised its definition of Asian in 2020 to include Central Asians, such as Afghans, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tajiks, Turkmen, and Uzbeks. However, people from West Asia, such as Iranians, and Southwest Asia, such as those from Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, are still coded as White.

The 2020 revision seems more accurate.
