who is the worst player to win a slam

ppl are asking who the best player not to win a slam is, so i thought to make a thread completely opposite.

i know everyone who wins a slam are excellent, im not knocking them. im picking thomas johansson at the AO 2002.

Michael Chang and Andy Roddick are probably the best players to win a single slam. Worst is Gaston Gaudio and 2nd worst Thomas Johanson

I've got to go with Brian Teacher, 1980 Australian Open.

Here were the seeds that year.

1. Guillermo Vilas
2. Ivan Lendl
3. Jose-Luis Clerc
4. Vitas Gerulaitis
5. Brian Gottfried
6. John Sadri
7. Victor Amaya
8. Brian Teacher
9. Yannick Noah
10. Bill Scanlon
11. Victor Pecci, Sr.
12. Paul McNamee
13. Peter Fleming
14. Kim Warwick
15. Peter McNamara

Here were the year-end rankings for 1980:

1. Bjorn Borg
2. John McEnroe
3. Jimmy Connors
4. Gene Meyer
5. Guillermo Vilas
6. Ivan Lendl
7. Harold Solomon
8. Jose-Luis Clerc
9. Vitas Gerulaitis
10. Eliot Teltscher

One guy in the top 5 (Vilas) showed up. To his credit, he made the semis.

Of the other 3 guys in the top 10 who bothered making the trip, Lendl and Clerc lost in the second round and Gerulaitis lost in the first round.

Teacher won 8 singles titles in his career, and his best showing at any other slam was the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 1982.

The field he faced in winning the Aussie Open is why I give Teacher the nod over guys like Gaudio and Johansson. (And at least Edmondson beat Newcombe in the finals).

Whoever voted Michael Chang and Roddick must be serious haters. Those two have at least followed their slam wins with deep runs in slam finals, semis and masters series shields. There are worse 1 slam players.

how about Cash, who also only won 7 or 8 titles in his career, but he was in the 88 AO final though

Richard Krajicek.

He looked unbeatable when he won Wimbledon 1996 but apart from that he has looked quite ordinary.

I'm not sure what that means, sewers.

They're saying Chang was the worse to win a slam when Gaudio was actually much worse. I was watching Best of 5 chokes last night, and even former pros acknowledge the fact that Gaudio had no business being in a GS final, let alone winning one.

They're asking worst players, not least consistent players. I greatly preferred Gaudio's game to Chang's. Either way there are worse players I guess.

Chang went toe to toe with Sampras and Agassi. Aside from the clay, what makes you think that Gaudio could do the same?

Chang's game is miles better that Gaudio. Chang could probably beat Gaudio on clay. All the other surface would definetely favour Chang.

If what you mean by ordinary is an incredible serve and superb attacking/net game that gave many players a lot of trouble, including wins over Pete Sampras, I guess youre right.

I disagree. Gaudio beat quality players to get to the '04 FO final. He beat Andreev (the last guy to beat Nadal on clay before his streak) in the 4th round, Hewitt in the quarters, and Nalbandian in the semis, ALL in straight sets. In fact, he destroyed Hewitt 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, and he bageled Nalbandian. He also took out Canas in the 1st round.

I can give you Nalbandian, but how good was Hewitt on clay? Did he ever make a whole lot of noise on the surface (didn't really follow Hewitt). And did Andreev has as big of a forehand back then as he did now?

I think Hewitt lost to Rafa last year or the year before in the QF's in three very tough sets, if I am not mistaken.

Then I find myself corrected. But I still think Chang was a better player than Gaudio.

Chang was WAY better overall. And I never read the entire thread....so I did not know where you were going with it.

It's cool. I agree with you and BP. Looking back, I didn't follow tennis all that much back then, and I didn't realize that Gaudio went through some tough players to get to his final.

Andreev (and??), Canas(so). the Hewitt (never anything special on clay) and Nalbandian. I recall Chang beating Lendl and Edberg to win his french.

That's....
-2 HOF's on Chang's victim list to ZERO for Gaudio's
-14 slams (16 finals) for Chang's victims to 2 slams (3 finals) for Gaudio's.
-400 weeks at #1 (6 yr end #1) for Chang's victims, to about 100 (2 yr end #1) for Gaudio.

Honestly how is this even a comparison?? Chang beat the likes of Agassi (straight setted him twice) , Henman, Rios, Bruguera (#7 on clay), Stich, Forget, I mean who the hell has Gaudio beaten??? He made 3 other slam finals, and won 7 masters... Gaudio???

Chang>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gaudio....... ALL DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since when was I comparing Chang to Gaudio????

Did you see the names "Chang" or "Gaudio" on my list of worst GS winners?

I was disagreeing that Gaudio shouldn't have been in a GS final.

In any case, I'd hardly call Edberg one of the greatest on red clay, and I'm pretty sure Hewitt will indeed get into the Hall of Fame (5 years after he retires). He's still playing, remember?

And, yes, Andreev on clay. How many people can say they've ever beaten Nadal on clay? After Andreev beat Nadal on clay, no one else was able to beat Nadal on clay for the next 81 straight matches. So, yes, Andreev on clay.

You are a fanboy masquerading as a half-objective poster. Stich and Henman were players who had most of their success at Wimbledon. Sure, Stich made a RG final, but he and Chang played in an era when Boris Becker was making clay court finals. Bringing up Henman in an argument regarding the strength of the clay court field only reveals how biased towards the 90s you truly are, and that you will never view the modern game with even a hint of objectivity.

Cash beat a much better field and, during his prime, was a much better player.

He also lost in 2 AO Open Finals (1987 to Edberg and 1988 to Wilander).

Why are some putting Roddick in this conversation? He has been near the top of the game for years. And he has been a finalist in two wimbledons and a USO.

Anyway- Thomas Johansson or Gaudio

My pick will be Lleyton Hewitt.

If you were actually serious about this, you should know that he won 2 majors, each on a different surface. Moreover, he finished both '02 and '03 as the world #1 ranked player.
