Turkish weightlifting team says aloha. Or was that Bulgarian ?

It's painful how suspended athletes can come back and win a medal. Gatlin, for example.

I have my doubts on the Jamaican sprinters as well. Asafa has already failed what once or twice ??

Nice sig Senti!

I just hope ''the lightning bolt'' isn't one of them.

You know what? Why not punish these speed freaks [especially the 100 metres specialists] ''ONLY'' if they can't break the 9 seconds barrier?:|

Playing poker and fishing are not enhanced by what Dick will reveal one day.

Andre Agassi's revelation didn't cost him his eight slam.

Coria, however, had to [after two years suspension] had to retire. Poor ''El Mago'' (though imo he isn't really that good ala Kuerten)!

Federer by far. He is the first athlete whom I have supported and have followed him for many years now. The way he plays tennis and the excitement he brings to tournaments and the tour in general is amazing.

Then my second favourite is Ovechkin from the NHL. I love how Alex plays hockey with his enthusiasm, beautiful highlight goals, unbelievable snipes from the ice and how consistently he scores goals. I hope he improves his all-around play this season now that his engagement is off. I wish he wins an Olympics gold or a Stanley Cup but those are not looking likely. I will still support him though and I love the Capitals in general as well but I miss Alex Semin.

After Roger Federer it is Frank Lampard for me. Such a classy and phenomanal sportsmen. I don't even support Chelsea but Lampard is the best goalscoring midfielder of his generation. His strike rate is absolutely insane and eh has been consistently amazing. He is Chelsea's all time leading goalscorer without playing striker; says enough right there.

Fat Frank has scored a lot of penalties. Just saying ;)

Back in the day, around 80-84, my faves were Seb Coe, and Alberto Salazar.
I suspect Lasse Viren (78 Olympics) had his part to play in my taking up running, but i now suspect he was blood-doping.

From the Eastern Bloc, one great runner I remember was Tatyana Kazankina.

Darn !!! ...

Her career came to an abrupt end in September 1984 when she was suspended for 18 months for refusing to undertake a drugs test after winning a 1,500m race in 3:58.63 in Paris.

Nice sig Senti!

At your service, Sir

Of the golfers -- no, of the sportsmen -- despite never seeing him live in his pomp, I'm a huge fan of Gary Player, based on the vast amount of interviews with him that I've seen. The guy is extremely magnetising and compelling.

Bjorn Borg in tennis and overall. Hakeem Olajuwon in basketball. Roger Staubach when the Cowboys had Tom Landry. Jack Nicklaus was my favorite golfer. Michael Phelps in swimming.

No love for Mick Doohan?

Certainly have tons of respect for Mick. If not for the accident which nearly ended his career he'd probably have won 7 championships taking 2 away from Rainey. He had a huge points lead at the time and came back but was too injured still.

I thought about putting him on my list but Rossi just has so much more personality and charisma. There is a reason he's universally loved. Even the Spaniards couldn't hold a grudge against him when he bounced Gibernau into the gravel.

I don't suppose any of you have heard of the great Sergei Bubka, or Elena Isinbayeva, or ... Edwin Moses ..

Of course. Too young for Bubka and Moses but know about them.

Do you think Kiriani James can break MJ's 400 record?

Bubka's world record got broken much sooner than I thought it would. Železný's javelin WR might still stand for another 50 years or so.

He has a personal best of 43.74 and is only 21 years of age. Johnson's 400m record (43.18 ) will be under serious threat soon enough.

Lavillenie just suddenly took that it seemed.

Just checked Jan Železný out. Wow.

Nobody has come close to him since and he has the top 5 and 7 of the best 10 throws in history for the current javelin specification. He was so supremely explosive and dynamic and simply awesome to watch.

Of the shot-putters, Adam Nelson:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjkg1XF1qrw

He had a curious lag in his rotation which allowed him to really yank through the shot in an extraordinarily dynamic and forceful manner, and when he got it right was capable of some monster puts. Basically, he has a hitch about 2/3rds of the way through his rotational technique where he pulls against the momentum that his body is spinning as though to offer a longer plain of leverage for the actual put through and it's something that was uniquely idiosyncratic to Mr.Nelson.

As for true favourite, for me, it would have to be Mark Spitz, 7 golds in 7 (swimming) events with his patented moustache minus the ''super suits'' swimmers don in '04 and '08 Olympics.
