Who is your WTA pick for French Open ?

Given that Serena is vulnerable at FO and given the fact that Azarenka /Sharapova are not a lock for FO, i think this time it will see a winner other than these 3.

I think Kerber, Li Na, Vinci, Bethanie Mattek , Radwanska are my dark horses who will do really well and would not be surprised if they make the finals or win.

Who is your pick ?

Who cares it's women's tennis ;-)..........BTW Mattek are you kidding she is a clown.

Moment of glory waiting for Radwasnka. If she does not, Kerber's game is suited for clay but certainly not the Big 3.

I'd like to see a couple clay tournaments played out before the FO to make a pick, to see who is coming into form. Although it's true Serena hasn't historically performed at her best on clay, she might be out to prove something this year and be circling this one.

At this point I'm picking Sharapova, Li Na, and Serena. Slight edge to Sharapova. Dark horse - Kirilenko

I'd love ARad to take it but not sure she is that good on clay or how much is suits her game, her serve especially is even more attackable on it.

It will probably either be Serena, or someone who hasnt won it before. The last 5 years have had 5 different first time winners, so this will either be the Serena puts it together and does it again, or we will have another new winner, and quite possibly another new slam winner, not just RG, as 3 of the last 5 have been as well.

I could see Na or Azarenka doing it as well I suppose. Azarenka isnt much of a clay courter but amongst the current field that doesnt even matter much. Na could easily win it if she plays well and doesnt choke.

Possibly Azarenka/Na. Certainly not Serena Williams who hasn't won it in over a decade  , though Professor RalphAgassi seems to differ in this regard, interesting.

I pick anyone but Serena. She hasn't done anything in that tournament for more than a decade and her first round match in 2012 was plain riddiculous.

Well since NadalAgassi predicted her to win 25 majors, she has to start collecting them fast cause she ain't 20 anymore.

Curious to know why so many think Azarenka is going to win this year. Has she even won a clay tournament in her entire career? (I'm genuinely asking this question.) Not that I can recall from recent history, at least.

Victoria has never made much impression on clay, let alone RG, and has been MIA since Indian Wells...this isn't the same Azarenka from last year, and even last year she only made it to the fourth round before getting ousted in straight sets by Cibulkova. Sure you could counter that with Serena's 1st round loss to Razzano, but still....I think most would agree that was an anomaly as she dominated the clay season up to that point, defeating both Azarenka and Sharapova easily...

It is hilarious people are dissing anyone who dares picking Serena, yet some of the same ones are picking Azarenka. While given the current womens field I would not discount Azarenka as having an outside shot to win this years French, and wouldnt be shocked if she did, but based on what other than Serena hateorade are her chances objectively better than Serena. Yeah Serena hasnt made it past the French quarters in a long time, often losing to people like Henin and Kuznetsova, the best clay courters of the last decade who are completely done now (either officialy or practically speaking); but Azarenka has NEVER made it past the RG quarters, and only made it there 2 out of 7 appearances, or if you want more recent stats only 1 of the last 3 as well.

Atleast Serena often reaches that stage and keeps losing a tough match to the eventual winner often. Azarenka is almost always going out in the early rounds; and Serena is the one winning Premier titles on clay the last few years, not Azarenka.

When you analyze Serena's French Open losses since 2002 most arent bad at all and easily explainable:

2003- lost super tough 3 setter to eventual winner and best clay couter by far of last 15 years, Justine Henin, and we all know what happened in that match when Serena was up 4-2, 30-0 although on this Serena hating forum I know that will be downplayed.

2004- lost tough 3 setter to Capriati, a former RG and Olympic Clay Champion and better clay courter than anyone still playing decent tennis today (other than maybe Serena herself), and one of Serena's toughest career matchups.

2005-2006- DNP

2007- lost in quarters to Henin. Henin not only dominated clay in the 2000s, but this was her best year ever which she totally dominated in general.

2008- OK a bad and inexplicable loss. The first one really.

2009- lost tough 3 setter to eventual winner Kuznetsova in quarters, squandering 3-1 3rd set lead.

2010- lost extremely tough 3 setter to Sam Stosur in quarters after having match point. Stosur, despite the shock finals loss, was by far the player of this years French, and beat Henin more easily than she had beaten Serena in the previous round, and went on to club Jankovic who was having a great clay season.

2011- DNP

2012- ok the 2nd inexplicable bad loss. This is the one she really dropped the ball I admit. It was totally her French to win, especialy with her pigeon Sharapova winning it in the end.

So of the last 10 years you have 3 DNPs, 3 losses to retired clay greats (Henin, Capriati), 2 losses to players who are on decline and no longer factors (Kuznetsova, Stosur), and only 2 truly bad losses. I could go through Azarenka's French Open history by comparision except it is a total joke for the most part and not even worth the effort. Lets just be kind and note her all time shining efforts at RG are a 3 set loss to Safina, and a 2 set smackdown at the quarterfinal stage by Na in her title year.

Way too early to tell. I need to see how they all do at the clay tune-ups and I need to see the FO draw. Stuttgart will probably be won by Li Na or Sharapova, assuming they both advance to the finals. I would not pick Radwanska to win the FO, there are too many players who can beat her like a drum when on--i.e. Sharapova, Serena, Li Na, Azarenka and Kvitova when she is on her game(which lately has not been often.)

I disagree. I see that loss to Razzano as a consequence of ill scheduling by the organisers who saw fit to play womens fifth seed in the evening so that by the time the match ended after 9 pm, the players were just fumbling around in the dark, hence all the drama on the mps. Doesn't matter if you are the fastest draw in the west or blind as a mole, if it is a shootout at 10 paces in pitch dark. Just some of those suspicious little things the slams pull. eg : the infamous Fed/Djok;Nad/Murray axiom. As for the question, I would like Serena to win it, if only for the enjoyment of seeing Navratilova's sour face get greener each slam Serena wins. If Serena doesn't, please let it be Li, who is really playing solid Big Four tennis these days, and after the total injustice of AO and Jamie/Serena/Li getting hurt one after another.

LOL I think she dominated the Marbella Open a couple of years ago - hardly contender credentials!

It would be funny if Sharapova beat Serena to win this year's title.

Hahahahhahaaaa!!!

Unless Sharapova hires a talented player to stand in for her (and cast spells, etc.), she is not defeating Serena in a majors final, as the fluke holiday of '04 is long gone, sonny.

Yes, of course the usual suspects run in here to post a "no" to Williams, as part of their pointy hood hatred of SW, without so much as a well constructed thought to justify it.

Personally, I would not be surprised to see Azarenka win it, as she only grows stronger with each passing year, is fearless, hungry, and with the most apparent "take no prisoners" court mentality since Serena's debut in pro tennis.

That can mean much when facing the talent-challenged hordes such as the aging Sharapova, angry/strange family relationship Bartoli, TW-overrated Radwanska, frightened / ready-for-the-rubber-room Kvitova, occasional headcase Li, et al. Does it guarantee a win? No, but she has more checks in her boxes overall on the mental and physical list, that it is patently illogical to dismiss her chances as others have.

I knew saying that would wind you and NadalAgassi up.

In all seriousness, though, it's a bit strange to claim that a player who has not won a particular title in more than a decade (i.e. Serena at the FO) is the favourite for the title. Clay is not her best surface by any means. :???:

Favorite for the womens French is no big thing or title, whoever it is. There isnt a single player that has more than a 15% chance of winning. As I said the most likely occurence is probably a 6th straight first time winner there, and the more surprising the player the less surprising it should be.

It's been 9 years already. Get over your bitterness.

I think Clay is her best chance. Maria has been playing well on that stuff for 3 years.....mind boggling. Serena somehow messes up at the French while having huge chances. Maybe the French Curse can ride Sharapova to win over Serena.

Should have beat Kuznetsova, Stosur in the semis and that fluke 2012 loss. Damm....Hope Serena wins against the FO..while gving Sourpova a good frown. Too good to end her career with just one FO.

.But I stand by Julia Georges.......FO the home of one slam wonders.

NadalAgassi and THUNDERVOLLEY - yea whatever, I'll be first to bump your posts when Serena loses in one of the first 4 rounds again. There's a reason why she hasn't done anything at the FO in the last 10 years and luck has nothing to do with it. If she was a serious contender she'd at least reach the final once or twice in the last couple of years but hasn't.

Besides, NadalAgassi as far as I remember you've been picking Serena to do well at the FO since forever so no real surprise you're doing it again. And you're going to be dissapointed yet again.

To give credit to Serena, though, the FO is the only tournament when I'm fairly certain she'll fail to win. Every other tournament including all the Masters on clay she's the favorite in my eyes. Not at the FO, though. It's just not her turf.

Last year before the FO he was hyping Serena and created this thread...
Henin is so lucky THAT Serena didnt show up as often at Roland Garros and vs her

Of course everyone knows what happen to Serena at the FO.

He made wrong predictions like the one in your sig.

I remember where he said Federer has zero chance to win Wimbledon after 2011. Saying he will lose in the QF's all time....that Berdych, Tsonga, Murray, Djokovic and Nadal are better than him on grass.

While Wimbledon being Federer best chance to win a slam...and his game is perfectly suited there compared to the grinders.

Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova or Li Na. Victoria Azarenka dark horse.

Serena Williams is a threat any place, any surface and any tournament in the world, still...

This coming from the individual who spends the other 50% of his life when he isnt orgasming and typing "Federer is GOD, Federer is my hero, I want Federer's babies, Federer is bestest and greatest and specialiest and cutest ever in everything" to endlessly bashing Serena, obviously out of bitterness of years of humiliating smackdowns adminstered to your favorites like Sharapova and Henin. It even got so bad you have been banned from this forum atleast 5 times and had many threads removed due to racist taunts and death wishes posted against Serena and her family. Not to mention your blind hatred of Serena driving you to crazy statements that make you the laughing stock of the forum, like the one in my sig (amongst others).

All true. Painfully true.

I knew saying that would wind you and NadalAgassi up.

Not at all. You had to be joking, as no one would ever believe your post to hold even a grain of truth. :)

To whom are you referring, as I think Azarenka could win this year's FO.

Same goes for those that picked Azarenka. She has never even made it past the quarters at RG so...

I don't think S.Williams will win another RG, because the French don't really warm up to her style of play.
They usually cheer for whoever she's playing against and i think that has just enough of an effect on her to put her off her game.

Here's my pick for the French Open

Clay court tennis and the French Open are definitely in a transitional phase in the WTA. Its wide open since the last great French Open champions have left the sport: Sanchez-Vicario, Seles, Graf and Henin. No one seems to have a stronghold on the surface since.

Anything is possible.
