Should Nadal or Djokovic be more discouraged by the result of the FO?

Nadal was obliterated by his greatest rival and may never lift the coupe again.
But he is still the undisputed clay GOAT.

Djokovic failed yet again when it counted most and may once again drop off at the top if he can't win Wimbledon. I would have Murray as top favorite now.

Djoker is so far ahead in points (4,430) he can't be caught even with a 1R exit at SW19. He has much disappoint from Sunday's match but he has much excite for the rest of the year. Nadal? Not so much.

I'm guessing the guy who hasn't won the FO nine times will probably be feeling slightly more discouraged right now.

Who should be more discouraged? Nadal. Who is more discouraged? Djokovic. Nadal knew he wasn't playing good enough to defend the title. He'd hoped somehow he'd do it again but knew his level wasn't good enough. Djokovic got so close to winning the title yet once again had to leave Paris empty handed.

Both. Nadal is finally coming to terms with the fact that he is FINNISH and Djokovic is finally coming to terms with the fact that RG is for him what the USO was for Borg.

a Runners-up trophy is empty-handed? He defends his points from last year and still takes a sizable chunk of prize money.

I would say Djokovic for sure. Nadal had nothing more to prove, being the completely undisputed all time king of the French Open, and he was also well aware that he's been having a crap season.

Djokovic, on the other hand: this was his shot to grab his first French Open title. Not only did he get Nadal out of the way, which is pretty much the main task, but he himself is in the middle of an epic season and he was perhaps playing the best tennis of his life. Those factors should have added up to the French Open title.

Not blaming Djokovic for losing, of course, given Stan's form, but just saying who should be more discouraged. Novak for sure.

Nadal might feel a little discouraged that 1 more rival has popped up to threaten any plans to extend his epic RG run into double figures but, at the end of the day, he still remains the greatest RG champion in the history of the game!

Djokovic is undoubtedly feeling a lot worse at the moment in that, having finally eliminated the one guy who constantly stood in his way, ANOTHER guy pops up out of nowhere to steal away his expected triumph! Now that has got to be one almighty bummer!!

I don't think discouraged is the right word for what Djokovic would be feeling. He would still be going to Wimbledon expecting to win the tournament, so he'd hardly feel discouraged. He would be feeling extreme disappointment in losing that match, because it cost him a potential CYGS, a victory in all 4 Slams and any real prospect of being regarded as among the very top few players of all time. Nadal might be feeling more discouraged because he looks to not have much to look forward too in terms of winning major tournaments in the future.

Nadal. It is the signal for retirement. Comprehensive beat down on his best surface, by his arch rival.

For Djokovic (and us, fans) it's certainly hart breaking. But, he ran into a plyer that was absolutely on fire, no shame in the loss. All of that after pretty much cruising to the finals. He'll eventually win one.

Usually it is the fanatics lunatics and media who "expect triumph" not Djokovic. He is very grounded and knows what has to be done. Kokkinakkis, Nadal and Murray were brutal enough and then he had to go up against Stan his worst matchup he knew it was not "in the bag".

True. I am more worried about his physical condition than the mental condition. He plays too god damn much IMO during the clay season. he should play IW Miami and Rome and not put so much pressure on himself to play the French Open. He gets taken out in the 4th round o well. Move on to Grass. I would prefer him to defend a Wimbledon title over winning the French Open.

Not so sure about this "he'll (Djokovic) eventually win one" sentiment. I think more likely it's next year or never.

Nadal probably should, but honestly he has looked more relaxed both on and off court the past months than I have seen him in a long time. TO me this could signal 2 things:

1) He knows why he is currently not playing well (e.g. still not great symbiosis with his racquet) and is fully confident he can come back to his best self.
2) He has accepted that his slam-winning days are over and thus feels like he can allow himself to simply enjoy the remainder of his career without the stress of being favorite, being expected to win slams.

ALthough I'm definitely not ruling out 1), I think it's more likely 2).

Agreed I think he is done there. I think 2011 started the ball rolling down hill. Maybe next year but that is it. If he could get a Puerta, Hewitt, Roddick, or Baghdadis type player in the final then he might have a shot of bagging the title. If not I do not see it. Once the ball starts rolling downhill it is hard to stop it.

Clearly Novak feels worse at the moment having come so close to CGS.

Nadal should (and surely does) feel worse about the long haul and career prospects going forward in general.

Nadal doesn't really seem bothered at all tbh :)

Probably because he saw what he'd have faced in the final had he somehow got past Djokovic.
I very much doubt there's a pro on the tour who'd have thought they'd have a chance at beating Stanimal on sunday.
