It’s a totally pointless event, but it’s popular because we get to see the likes of Federer, Nadal, and Murygoat play with each other in a relaxed atmosphere. When they all shuffle off in to retirement I can’t see it continuing. Who would pay to watch an exho where the likes of Tsitsipas and Zverev are constantly giving each other high fives?

That’s a good point. May stagger on for a few years but can’t see it being a success without the old hands.

I liked it although the fakeness did get to me at times. The fun talks during the sit downs and seeing legendary players team up for doubles more than made up for it. But I don’t see it continuing without Fed as a player. It was his thing, he held it together.

Can't you see how wasteful is this? Many members of the team were just standing there looking bored, doing nothing, standing around, looking around, empty face expression... Just look at Tsitsipas and Murray here... They looked so lost and not sure what to do, how to act .. lol What's their aim really? Just killing time, waste money? Win the Laver Cup??? Lol they've won every single Laver Cup... It's really pointless!!!

And what are the captains doing??? Sitting around, clapping. They don't know the player that well except the player's current coach! It's their current coach that needs to tell the player what to do, not some strangers from Sweden.

It's a glorified WWE Event.

However, the money Director makes surely covers the expenses accordingly.

Like others have stated, I see Federer being back next Year and either takes over Berdych or Borg as Team Captain as he will continue being a popular figure at this event.

This thread reminds me of @babbette 's thread long ago denouncing the WTF as a glorified exo.
Not really. At least the WTF has all the top ranked players there and have a humongous prize money so there is a tangible incentive to win. Also, significant ATP points are involved. This Laver cup just have some random players who are kinda popular. The players all look serious at WTF.

Next year is Vancouver and me and my buddy are going (we travel to a lot of tennis events together)

So next year or Berlin can be the last. I think it will end sooner than later though.

I've genuinely enjoyed the Laver Cup every year. But admittedly a huge part of the appeal was getting to see 2 or 3 of the greatest players of all time actually team up for a change after spending 10-15 years as fierce rivals. That was the novelty factor that made it extra fun. I can't see being as invested without them.

Being a player and teacher, I know scores can be choreographed, but this seemed as real as it could except for Djokovic going down to FAA so easily! He just wasn't there!
I didn't get a chance to see it. You don't think the wrist was a significant factor in that result? Or Novak's lack of practice / play this year?

It doesn't actually worry me that much either way but it's not going away any time soon that's for sure, Federer, Borg, McEnroe, Laver are too heavily invested in it now for it to just disappear...

I heard that, but thought it was a good ploy to keep The World "in it" with a possibility to win! It's an absolute joke that with all the top 10 Euro's, they actually lost to The World! I couldn't fathom it really even with the weak play of Federer and Murray! Rafa didn't seem interested and is usually done after the USO! Huge choke by Tsitsipas!

In its current form, the LC will not survive without RF's heavy involvement and his ability to promote the event and get the biggest names to participate. And even if names like Alcaraz, Zverev, Medvedev all play, I'm not sure there will be enough interest.

Don't think Rafa was interested? He did have other pressing matters weighing on him -- ab injury & first born on the way. He certainly seemed emotionally invested

Boring, artificial, so many fake emotions that makes even a hardcore tennis fan to close his eyes and hope it will pass soon.
Guess it goes well with that old fart Laver who has too much undeserved publicity.

Laver has done more for tennis than 98% of the players in the Laver Cup.

Take him away and you have no McEnroe. Maybe no Federer (at least not the way that we know him.)

Laver was a tremendous influence for the players that came after him.

Mohammed Ali is considered to be one of the all-time greatest boxers.

Nobody s**** on him.

Why should Laver be treated any differently?

"Old fart Laver... "! No sense or appreciation of tennis history? Tennis before the Big 3? Are you really in your 40s?
i may be wrong but i like to think there might be a right balance between showing genuine appreciation for tennis history and exhibiting uncontrolled drooling or weeping about a circus exo
(also: liking a post doesn't necessarily mean i agree with all its content... as evidenced right here) ;)

What would soon be to you? All of the above guys can do other things and sad to say but Laver could pass at any moment and very likely within a decade.

Tennis simply doesn't lend itself to the team format like golf.

Yeah I think the Day 1-3 point aspect should be redone for obvious reasons. The way the sessions are made, again Day 3 having the possibility to get 4 for the price of 2 is neat but you can't structure a tournament that way. This year it was fortunate the matches ended 6-5 for World and even at 6-6 had Tsitsipas won and Fritz followed it would be okay but the possibility a winning team could be 4-8 in total matches won and get the title is ludicrous. I think easiest way to deal is to cut down the 3 days to 2. Because with 3 days it really is hard to make it value all around.

Instead of 12 matches have 11 so there is no opportunity for a draw and have 5 scheduled Day 1 and a possible 6 scheduled for Day 2 where you need 8 points to win and Day 2 matches are worth 2 points. That guarantees at least 2 matches for Day 2 but realistically should be at least 4 unless one team is absolutely garbage bin in which case does it need to be drawn out?

Day 1 could also have 4 singles and 1 doubles while Day 2 has 4 and 2.

With a 2 day event and 10 matches you could also have different structure for the player selection. Have the old 1 singles max for 1 player a day and max 3 participation overall which I think is kind of the case now. Cap teams at 6 players, if there's an injury issue on a day then an exception is made where a player can do more than 1 singles.

So now if I'm not mistaken the extreme scenario would be if one team goes 5-0 for Day 1 and the other team goes 4-0 to start Day 2 and winning the title or winning the title despite 4-6 in matches won but going in you know matches are double for Day 2 so adjust accordingly. Plus the only way the tournament even goes to that 10th match is if it's 3-2 day 1 and 2-2 on day 2.

I've enjoyed reading people bash Jack Sock all weekend (who won 2 doubles matches and almost beat Casper Ruud) and the conspiracy theory types claiming the matches are "rigged."

I watched more of the Laver Cup than I ever have previously, and the Tiafoe/Tsitsipas match was fantastic. Not sure why tennis fans dont like seeing the best players in the world playing each other in a unique format. If you dont like it, you can go watch Alexander Bublik lose a 3rd set break point after hitting a ball with his racquet handle. There were plenty of other tournaments on as well.

It's also great to see some North American cities that don't have a premier event get to host an indoor tournament with big players.

Most people don't understand doubles here. I'm hoping Pospisil gets a spot for that very reason in Vancouver. And you're absolutely right on venues, I'm sure Berlin will be excited too. I think that's more the point of the tournament in taking place in the Fall in cities without major tournaments. And they're big cities, except Geneva being smaller and having a 250 tournament but I think that was due to Roger and early days. Boston, Chicago, Vancouver are fantastic locations for this.

10 years maybe, anyone's guess whether it will still be around in 20 years. If there's a lack of stars, it may be hard for it to remain a viable event

Good lord some of you are hopeless. This is a very popular event. New Stars will rise. Its not going anywhere.

Might end up being a huge event years down the line, but for now it has growing pains! It jumped from a nice little exhibition early on to "life, death, & war" at the end with Tiafoe's head-hunting Fedal in doubles! Shriver actually had to apologize for Tiafoes profane rant coming off the court while defeating Tsitsipas! Still not my type of event regardless even though I enjoyed Novak's match over Frances! ;) :cautious::p:-D:unsure:

I keep flip flopping on this one. Agree with many of the points for it and the points against it.
After Fed and Nadal lost, I felt they need to put this thing down. But the Tiafoe stole the show and I was happy by the conclusion.

It's great that it hits different cities especially when it hits big cities that don't have major tennis events.
Having the Big 3 involved over the years has been crucial and may be problematic even with just Federer out of the mix.
Great to see top players playing dubs.
I've seen exos in person, LC in person and ATP matches in person. LC feels somewhere between ATP tennis and the goofiness of exos. But it does have some odd moments.

Maybe this could be billed as a fan based all star event.
Then at each slam the fans start voting for players and then the team captains draft based on the top 20 voted in players?
Even consider on day 1 having less matches, but having some hitting/serving competitions between the two teams. Whoever wins that competition gets some advantage in the upcoming matches.
Possible events: Fastest Serve, Serve Targets hit in a time limit, ground stroke targets,

The “too cool for school” crowd here just wants to crap on everything. Great event, loved it.
