Just one correction. Open means both professional and amateur players can play in the tournament. That wasn't the case until 1968.

Yeah, that's true. It was the US Championship at Forest Hills, an amateur event. Hoad turned pro in 1957 after winning another Wimbledon, so he might have won a few more majors after that, but we'll never know.
