To be honest, though, I'd probably still pick Stan regardless, just because of one match in which he displayed his true peak level:

I know, this is just my opinion (although this is a truly subjective debate), but if we're defining peaks as being the best possible level produced by a player, then I really can't find an instance where Murray was able to produce this level of tennis in a single match. There are some really great ones out there (Canada 2010 is a pretty good mention) but I haven't seen anything to change my mind... yet.

If we're splitting it up into events, then Murray evens it out a bit:

AO: Stan >> Murray
RG: Stan >> Murray
W: Murray >>> Stan
USO: Murray > Stan

H2H stands at 11-8 to Murray.
Varies by surface. Murray is 3-0 against Stan on grass, Stan leads 4-1 on clay, its tied 2-2 indoors, but Murray leads 6-3 on outdoor hard. They're also dead even at 3-3 at majors so there's not much difference when these two go head to head. Tbh, Wawrinka scares me more than Murray does when they're both playing at their best level as Wawrinka's weapons can make you feel helpless.

Murray has beaten healthy Djokovic several times, and others from big 3. More than Stan did that.

But Stan has dominated Djokovic in Slams since 2015. Gotta give credit where its due. I didn't think he could do it at US Open but the level he brought against Djokovic took me by surprise. He went for his big shots and didn't miss much. I kept thinking how one can hit this big and not make errors!
There was very little Djokovic could do to him. Just a bad match up for Nole.

On topic, peak Stan vs peak Murray, I'm picking Murray in 4 sets. Andy is probably the best returner ever against the biggest servers. He would frustrate and grind down Stanimal at their respective peaks.

Guys..... stop it. Djokovic was injured and had cakewalk dream draw with retirement too (2016). In 2019 just injured.

I don't think he played bad at US Open 2019 even with the injury. Stan is just very confident against Djokovic. Novak also somehow becomes a bit more defensive when Stan goes for his shots. Stanimal really has been a bad match up for Novak since 2013 in Slams.

I agree with what you said about their approaches, but I would really like to see them play when everything is ok, so someone couldn't come up with any excuse after match is done.

Depends on how long this "peak" must last. If we only talk about one match or maybe one tournament, then it’s Stan.

But if this "peak" must last for let’s say a month or just two tournaments in a row, then easily Murray. And we don’t even need to talk about full seasons.

So Stan seems to be better at 100%, but I think nobody can ever play at 100% even for a full set, so this question can't really find an answer IMO. In the end consistency is everything, to some degree even for winning a single match. And that was clearly Murray's strength. He didn't intend to look spectacular for 5 minutes or one match or a week etc.

I certainly didn't see any signs of injury there, atleast not in terms of ballstriking, serve mph, movement etc...

Murray's p*ss poor performance against Djokovic at RG 2016 final compared to Stan's performance against Djokovic in the RG 2015 final tells you everything. Scurry Murray can't hang! It's Stanimal 2.0 all day every day!!!!

Tired of the "peak" comparison (everytime your favorite player wins he is at his peak, if he loses he is not in his peak). If both Stan and Murray have 3 Majors it means there is no significant difference in their best level.

Murray destroyed Djokovic in the Wimbledon 2013 final. Wawrinka is better on clay and Murray on grass.

I never understood these peak to peak comprisons. They are unverifiable so it’s quite a pointless discussion. The point is two players can play average or even weak but go into an epic 5-seter in a slam final. Some will say it was peak to peak while it wasn’t.
