Both men and women. The men pretty much follow the exact rankings every year for me, and probably for most people, so it really is the women that I am interested to see what the various opinions on will be. First the men:

1997- Sampras
1998- Rafter (Sampras ended #1)
1999- Agassi (even if Sampras was really still the better player at this point)
2000- Kuerten or Safin (Kuerten ended #1)
2001- Hewitt or Agassi (Hewitt ended #1)
2002- Hewitt
2003- anyone of Roddick, Ferrero, Federer really (Roddick ended #1)
2004- Federer
2005- Federer
2006- Federer
2007- Federer
2008- Nadal
2009- Federer
2010- Nadal
2011- Djokovic
2012- Djokovic
2013- Nadal
2014- Djokovic
2015- Djokovic
2016- Murray or Djokovic (Murray ended #1)

Pretty straightforward to the rankings as I said. Now for the women which probably gets a lot more complicated.

1998- Hingis (Davenport ended #1)
1999- Davenport (Hingis ended #1)
2000- Venus, with Davenport a close 2nd (Hingis ended #1, Davenport #2, Venus #3)
2001- Venus, with Capriati a close 2nd (Davenport ended #1, Capriati #2, Venus #4)
2002- Serena
2003- Serena or Henin (Henin ended at #1)
2004- meh could be any of like 12 women, Henin or Sharapova is my top choice though (Davenport ended #1)
2005- Clijsters (Davenport ended at #1)
2006- Henin or Mauresmo (Henin ended at #1, Sharapova #2, Mauresmo #3)
2007- Henin
2008- Venus, with Serena a close 2nd (Jankovic ended at #1)
2009- Serena
2010- Clijsters or Serena, probably Clijsters (Wozniacki ended at #1)
2011- Kvitova by far (Wozniacki ended at #1, biggest joke ever, even topping Davenport 2001)
2012- Serena (Azarenka ended at #1)
2013- Serena
2014- Serena
2015- Serena
2016- Kerber

Funny how Davenport has four YE#1s, and the only year I have her as the rightful #1 is a year she wasnt YE#1- 1999. I see a case for her in both 98 and 2005 though, 2001 and 2004 are both comical.

The players that were number 1!!! This is getting silly. I mean it's not hard. Tennis players get points for winning matches. Matches at certain tournaments are worth more than others. Done.

It depends.
If your favourite player is number 1 then everything is ok.

If you're favourite isn't number 1 then the system is flawed.
