I remember watching tennis in late seventies when WOJTEK FIBAK competed with the best of them and played in the final of Masters Year End Event.Unfortunatelly to this day he remains the only Polish tennis player who has ever been ranked in the top 10.

Pete Sampras and Roger Federer. I know it's cliche and I jumped on the bandwagon, but those two really remind you what tennis is all about. Whoever gets the last ball in the other person's court is the winner. They always have that idea in their head with whatever they did, and that goal orientation made their tennis great.

Agassi made me want to watch and want to play. Then I saw Sampras, and realized an all court game was the way to go. Mind you, this was the early Sampras, the one that played the baseline much more than his later years.

Edberg and Stich (for some reason, I never liked Becker)
though I'm not really a serve&volley player ;)
I really like Borg, but I was way to young to see him play live :(

Tennis Inspiration

Boris Becker was the reason I started playing tennis. When I saw him diving around the grass at Wimbledon, it made me want to play tennis like him.

Connors, Borg and mostly McEnroe. They played at their best when I was growing up in HS and college. Never thought about it until now, maybe the comination of all three of their playing styles accounts for my all-court game I play today.

Who IS my inspiration - Agassi! I'm 52 and everytime I have to play league matches against these guys in their 20's and 30's I think of the fact Agassi hasn't given up and I should keep fighting. BTW - my record against the younger guys isn't all that bad.

When I first started... Sampras was the man. I also idolized Kafelnikov and Rafter.

But then Goran entered my life. Totally blew my conception of tennis ;)
Viva Goran!! :D

Same for me, those three pretty much cover all that is possible in tennis.

I may be biased but it was a golden age for a kid growing up in tennis.

Borg, for his uncanny consistancy, and cool temper. I was about 20 when he at his peak in the late 70's/early 80's.

btw, why is Davydenko, the toughest competitor in the circuit, not sponsered by a major apparel company?

It's such a pity to see lowly ranked players such as Phillisousis and Mardy Fish are sponsered, but Davydenko is not.

Michael Chang. Mainly because he was just a nice guy to boot. I always rooted for him out of the big 4 US Players at the time (Sampra, Agassi, Chang and Courier). Just a shame he couldn't win another slam.

Plus, he was on Sesame Street with Big Bird and bounced a ball 40 times. That's what made me want to start playing tennis. Never forgot that.

By the way,I am looking for tennis matches featuring Wojtek Fibak.I know that it sounds little obscure but I think that I have the best chance to find them on this board .

Wasn't he Lendl's mentor when he first came on tour? Didn't they play doubles together?

I started to play tennis just because, I wasn't inspired by anyone. But I've definetly tried to play like Agassi more than anyone.

One day when I was about ten years old, I turned on the TV on a Saturday morning to watch Bugs Bunny. But it wasn't on. Instead I watched Johnny Mac on "Breakfast at Wimbledon." Ever since then I've dreamed one day smashing my racquet and behaving like an *** (as well as hitting beautiful volleys) one the lawns of Centre Court. Instead I will go to my club tonight in frozen suburban Minneapolis, volley like Roddick, dump many into the net, get passed a lot, double fault, and hit a few winners that no one will see. With any luck, I can still behave like an ***. The dream lives on.

I couldn't hope to say it any better, so all I will say is ditto :p

I would have to say Jimmy Conners was the most influential on my getting into tennis. But Yannick Noah was the player I most looked forward to watching.

Sampras.

I remember a couple matches in particular - this was in one of the summer Masters Series that he beat Nicolas Lapentti in one round (something like 6-4 6-2 or 7-6 6-2) and then lost to Alberto Martin 6-4 6-4. That was when I discovered how exciting serve and volley tennis could be, and when I decided that I needed to learn to serve and volley, and that's when I got really into the game.

The first couple matches I saw when I first started were all Roddick's match. After watching him play I started to like tennis more.

Pancho Gonzalez. not only could he play, but he had a great personality..and his name...Pancho...even I sensed it was something unusual for a professional tennis tennis player.

Tilden, Kramer, and Gonzales. Tilden had the grace and movement of a God, Kramer was Mr. Efficiency, and Gonzales played like a cat with its tale on fire.

You *saw* some Tilden matches????

I only saw film of Pancho. Who I *could have* put first on my list ... but he really inspired my older brother (who used to wax poetic about him).

Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras.

Borg's the one that got me interested in tennis in the late 70's. Unfortunately, by the time I took tennis lessons in college (took tennis as a PE requirement), he had already retired. Pete Sampras, even to this day, is the one I emulate the most. IMO, his movements are the most perfect of all, especially his serve.
