Novak is as close to a certainty for year end number 1 as it's possible to be, ditto Rafa for number 2.

Murray and Roger are pretty close at this point; Roger is on 9230 but is defending 5170 between now and year end (4060) and Murray is on 6855 but only defends 2775 (4080).

So who will take the year end 3rd spot?

Roger's been very consistent on hard courts since last years Wimbledon, I've yet to see anything to make me think otherwise.

He's defending a lot of points, but Murray is also defending 2 Masters series shields.

I still see Federer finishing in the top 3.

Either way, it's going to be very close. If Murray doesn't nail down the no3 spot by the end of the year (like he has done the no4 spot this last year or so) then it'll likely happen early next year.

Also a lot will depend on whether he can sort himself out mentally and actually grab one of the next two hardcourt slams, if he does then it makes it academic since I don't see Fed getting many more big point hauls again. But even if the maiden GS doesn't happen, Andy will still be doing better than Fed anyway I think from now on.

Del Potro's one to watch out for over the next 18 months in terms of someone possibly overtaking Murray from below, assuming both stay reasonably fit over that period.

Federer even today is still a better player than Murray IMO. I dont see Murray neccessarily even winning a Masters this year. And I dont see him doing better than Federer at the U.S Open or WTF unless he gets an easier draw.

I think Federer.

Defending points does not matter for year end #1. At the end of the year, the Race and Rankings (almost, because of Davis Cup) match up.

Right now, Fed is ahead of Murray by 460 points. If Murray outscores Fed by 460 points over the rest of the year, he will be #3. It's definitely possible. But I would put my money on Federer.

Nadal. He's lose his points, Roger will win everything, and then next year Djoker will suffer an upset early in AO, allowing Fed to win and (eventually) overtake him for #1.

Duh.

Murray will finish no. 3. C'mon the Murrrrrrray.

After showing promise in summer US hardcourt season, he will deliver shock maiden US Open win, taking out Djokovic and Nadal in SF and F en route.

Then once he gets that first slam, confidence floods within him for once and he goes on a streak rivaling Djokovic's own, taking Shanghai, Paris, WTF and 2012 AO in the process.

He will then cool off, and not quite take over no. 1 ranking, but after that spell he will become a legitimate contender for every GS, the top 4 will be reinvigorated and he will no longer be universally mocked and despised on the talk tennis forums!!

Just you wait...

Order will be restored.

Fed -1

Nadal -2

Djokovic -3

Murray -4

Nalbandian -5

Safin -6

Hewitt -7

Roddick -8

Actually Fed is currently on 9230 points,Murray is on 6855,a difference of 2375 points. How well each of them do in the upcoming North American swing will be crucial to whether there will be any rankings movement between them.Murray has Montreal to defend,Fed has Cincy to defend but also has to defend USO semi-final points whereas Murray only has measly 3rd round points to defend there. Both need to maintain form.

She means in The Race.

The rankings are misleading to YE #1 because points that were won during last year's US summer hardcourt and fall seasons count towards the rankings but will not count at the end of the year. It is better to look at the Race because ALL the points won so far will count at the end of the year, in addition to the points won during the remainder of the year.

Federer has outscored Murray by 460 so far this year. Murray has top make that up in the remaining 5 months of the tennis year.
