I didn't say it was his fault. Of course it isn't. He is just doing his best and playing, like anyone else, and I don't blame him for setting the #1 ranking as a goal when it is within reach.
This also isn't bias against Federer on my part for a few of the oversensitive Federer fanboys. Since while I freely admit I am not a Federer fan, I immensely dislike Djokovic, and so of the two prefer Federer 100 times over.
I never approve a slamless #1, ever. Either in the mens or womens game. Personally I think there should be a rule in place that no player without a slam in the last 12 months should ever be allowed at #1. I am a Serena Williams fan but did you realize she would have still been ranked #1 after the U.S Open even if she lost in the round of 16. Do you know what that means? She could have had 0 slam quarterfinals (forget titles, quarterfinals) on her resume and been still ranked #1 at that point, although she might have lost it in the interim (not even sure on that, if all else remained the same). How preposterous is that, and a sign of the badly flawed rankings system of today. While I know the ATP differs somewhat from the WTA they still have many of the same ridiculous things- slams worth only double the points of a tier 1 or Masters (please), losing a final getting more than half the points of the winner (again nonsense), getting to throw out some poor results in smaller events, and so on. I make note of the womens game as I am a regular follower of the womens game and this has become a common epidemic in the womens game. Those of us who post on the womens tennis forum once regularly induldged in Wozniacki bashing for almost 2 years steady, so this is not a new phenomen just because it is Federer involved this time.
Furthermore I don't even see how Federer's year is significantly (or any) better than Djokovic's even outside of his failure to win a slam title vs Djokovic winning one. Perhaps someone could point out how it is, as I dont see it. Making the idea Federer could end ahead even more baffling and a sign of the poor ranking system. To put into perspective again an ATP 500 and ATP 250 combined is worth almost the same # of points as the gap between winning and losing a slam final (800 points). How f-ed up is that. That is exactly how Federer could even still be in contention with Djokovic, despite not winning a slam title while Djokovic did, and seemingly not having any better a year in any other meaningful way to compensate.
Although as I already said too if anyone would deserve that to happen to them it would be Djokovic after his bogus ITF POY award last year. Even if he would be getting screwed out of something 20 times more important (YE#1, probably ATP Player of Year, all the important Player of Year awards) than the menial ITF award, I still would find it fitting karma of sorts. Sometimes big punishments are fitting even more minor crimes, and they often keep such offenses from being repeated again. So that said despite that I would disagree with it, I wouldn't complain about it either, just because of who else is involved.
