RG - Nadal d Djokovic

Wimbledon - Nadal d Murray

USO - Murray d Nadal/Djokovic

(Obviously, these guys have to fall on opp. sides of the draw, but I think these will be the main matchups)

Unfortunately, I don't think Fed will go past the semis at RG or Wimby. He has a chance at the USO.

I think Murray will definitely win his first major at the USO this year. He loves NY and his already great year will culminate in a victory there. Somehow I also think he will do well at Wimby despite his defensive game.

Djokovic is the best competitor currently to Nadal on natural surfaces. I think he will definitely get to the semis at Wimby if not further.

Nadal obviously is the favorite for RG and Wimby as well. I think this year he will try to make a concerted effort to reach the USO finals. We'll see how his body holds up when the hard court season resumes.

Who knows where Roger is and where he will be in a few months! I doubt he will be able to make a dent in his trophy count this year. Yeah, he's better in 5 sets and he generally does well at the majors, but he's lost mental ground to the top 3.

Year end rankings -
Nadal
Murray
Djokovic
Federer

What do you think?

Seeing how they plowed through everyone last year at Wimby, it will be Federer vs Nadal in the final. I hope Fed's back & serving can go back to normal by then, though.

That's the thing isn't it? Federer needs to get his serve back in order. He was doing decently at Rome, so I hope it improves to at least last year's level by the time Wimbledon rolls around.

At least? Last year was Federer's BEST serving EVER. The rest of his game IMO was at times worse than it currently is. He's better in '09 from the baseline than in '08. Obviously, like any player, so much is reliant on the serve. That's the reason, IMO, he didn't win AO '09.

I'd love to see Murray win the USO but something is telling me that if Nadal wins the next two slams (which he surely has a high chance of doing) then we may be on the verge of seeing something very, very special...

RG - Nadal/Djokovic

Wimbledon - Federer/Nadal

US Open - Federer/Murray

Don't know who will win it (hopefully Fed) but these will be the finalists me thinks.

I didn't say he served horribly at Wimbledon. In all the early matches, it was pretty fantastic and it also saved him at times during the final. But he has to have it at least at that level to win this year or make it to the final as his forehand and foot speed are not as good as they were last year. I think there's more than one reason he didn't win AO. Not just the serve. But the serve was better in Rome, so I hope it's a good sign.

Either Roger or Rafa winning the remaining three is good with me. (I know I'm in lonely company there. :) )

RG: Nadal d Djokovic 6-4, 6-0, 6-4
W: Nadal d Federer 6-0, 7-6(3), 6-0
USO: Nadal d Murray 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5
(semis: Nadal d Federer 6-4, 6-1, 7-5)

This is indeed a key question and let's see how he hurt his back (since he refered to his back problem after his loss to Djokovic last week). He initially quoted just a stiff back last year but it seems to have become a nagging injury.

This is just before quarter-final against James Blake at Paris Open in 2008(October),
"Due to a stiff back, I have decided to pull out of my match against James Blake tonight," Federer said in a statement on his official website. "My back has been stiff for the last couple of days and I woke up this morning and it did not respond to the treatment I had last night.

Before Dubai/Davis Cup in 2009(Feb/March):

“After injuring my back last fall, I did not have enough time to strengthen it completely,” Federer said in a statement posted on his Web site. “As a precautionary measure, I will use the next few weeks to make sure the back injury is fully rehabilitated.”

After his loss to Djokovic at Rome 2009 (April, a few days ago):

“I have the feeling that maybe since I had the back problem, my serve is just not working there where I want it to be. That’s something I have to make sure I can fix for Paris.”

I'm predicting Fed isn't winning any slams this year. This is a bizzarre year for him with the impending fatherhood and other stuff and he won't win any slams in 2009. He will win a slam in 2010. But ZERO slams for Fed in 2009. 2009 will be for Fed what 2001 was for Pete. And remember I predicted on this forum in late 2007 that Fed would only win 1 slam in 2008 and lots of people laughed.. since they were predicting the Golden Slam for Fed in 2008, but I saw something else coming for him.....

Anyways

I predict Rafa will defend his channel slam that is he will win RG and Wimbledon this year to the shock of many who think Rafa will never win Wimbledon again, well they are wrong.

I predict Nole will win the USO, I see it coming for him this year.

FO: Nadal
Wimbledon: Nadal
USO: Nole

Murray will win the WTF formerly known as TMC.

His serve was good in Halle and the first 6 matches at Wimby - was very bad at most other tournaments. He's not breaking as well as before so it's very important for him to serve well.

RG: Nadal
Wimby: Fed
USO: Fed

Hope springs eternal...

Having said that, I would like to see a calendar Slam in my lifetime - and Rafa obviously has a very good chance to do that.

Fed did GREAT in AO against Nadal from the baseline and at the net. If you told me that Fed could make it to the 5th set against Nadal if he was serving at < 40%, and he was missing all first serves on important points, I would not believe you. But it happened, so obviously the rest of his game was alright.

Its entirely possible. RG is a lock for him. If he plays at Wimby like he did last year, he definitely has a very good chance there and seeing that he doesn't have a credible challenger yet (who can consistently win against him), you can call him a favorite there as well. That only leaves the USO as his final challenge to overcome.

If he can schedule better this year and stay physically intact, I say he has a higher than average chance of a calendar slam.

If he does that, then he will have 9 slams with 2 wins at Wimby, 2 hard court major titles, a calendar slam and that awesome clay record all at 22 yrs old. Well on the way to the GOAThood conversation at that point I would say.

RG: Rafa - Djoko 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
W: Fed - Rafa 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-1 (best set ever by one player) 7-6 (13)( best set ever in a tennis match)
US: Fed - Murray 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

Funny how everyone write Federer off as far as the US Open goes, totally ignoring the fact that he IS defending champion there. Murray and Djokovic couldn't beat him there before, and yet they are favorites to win there more than he is. Nadal has never made a USO final, and yet he is a favorite to win there.

Just a reminder, Federer came to the USO last year with the lowest confidence ever, after losing to Simon, Karlovic and Blake, and yet he managed to win it, conviningly. Federer may be in a slump, but one should never, ever, write him off.

I still think Nadal and Fed will be the top players in the slams.

RG - Nadal def. Federer/Djokovic
Wimbly - Nadal def.Federer
USO - Federer def. Murray/Djokovic

Not exactly. He did come to the USO having won gold medal in doubles. I think the winning it gave him some confidence going into the USO.

I don't think everybody is writing him off either. But yeah, his confidence besides the Olympic Doubles Gold was pretty low. Especially after that exhausting Wimbledon loss. In my eyes, he's the favorite to win the USO. Everybody is secondary.

Maybe, but as far as singles matches go, he was on the floor. Losing 2nd round in Canada, 3rd round in Cincy, and in the Olympics to Blake. Add to that a tough match with Andreev, and you've got yourself a disaster in the making. And yet, he still won.

I felt like Murray was too exhausted with the 2 day Nadal match to give Fed a lot of problems last year. The US Open Series ball is the worst for Nadal's game but it still won't stop him from winning it eventually.

What I find even more funny is how people are writing off Nadal and Federer (yes, the last 3 Wimbledon finalists!) saying it's a tossup between Djokovic, Murray and Nadal, lol. When did Murray and Djokovic become as good as Nadal and Federer on grass? Maybe I missed something?

I would love for him to win his 6th conscutive US Open. Even more than Wimbeldon.

Exactly. Not to take anything of Murray and Djokovic. Both are super talented and great players, but Murray is yet to show consistency in the slams, and Djokovic too (despite winning one). I would love for them to step it up and make Wimbly more competitive, but last year Djokovic lost to Safin in straight sets, while Murray got crushed by Nadal.

I'm still hoping he wins wimbledon, but 6th consecutive US open would be nice as well. Actually both would be great but I'm not expecting too much this year.

I think Fed will reach the Wimbly final, but it'll depend on who his opponent is. If it's Nadal (most likely), than I say Federer will lose again (he just can't stay with Nadal mentally). Against anyone else he will win.

As a Fed fan, I'd really love for somebody to beat Nadal before the final and have Roger win the 14th at Roland Garros. You think he cried a lot in the Australian, if he did that the guy won't be able to talk for a month! :)

This should be broken down into, one, who you want to win, and two, who you would pick to win if you were forced to bet your house on the winner.

1. Rafa, Rafa, Rafa
2. Rafa, Rafa, Fed

Although, if Rafa gets #2 & #3, you will have to pound a stake through his heart to take him out at the USO.

I have strong feeling that Fed is not gonna get USO this year, Nadal too (probably because hes too tired by then), so I think Novak/Murray wins it this year.

GUYS, what about the women? Sheesh, youd sewar tennis was only played by males. be fair.

They need to get some hotter babes on that tour if they want me to watch. Ever tried to look at Carla Suarez Navarro for an entire match without turning the channel?
