Had Federer not squandered those 2 MP on serve at 5-3? Federer obviously would have been full of confidence after beating Djokovic but Nadal still had Federer's no in Grand slams.
Would have been an incredible final I think... sad that Fedal never got to face each other at USO after all those near misses.

2008 USO final would’ve been more interesting. Although Fed would’ve probably gone into that match with a defeatist mindset

Federer was in better form. And he played first match vs Djokovic in 11 SF, therefore more rested.
But you never know, at that time Fed still had mental block vs Nadal. However, if he beat Djoker in SF his confidence would be huge.

Federer in 4 tight sets.

Federer was threatening to go 2-1 up in RG. He was much more in competition in rallies against Djokovic than Nadal in final.

Even on AO slower courts, he had the control of the match till half of it in 2012 SF.

BUT match ups matter. I don't know who would win. Federer based on Form, Nadal based on history.

50-50 tbh.

Federer had 40-15 and failed to serve out the match against Nole (who he had beaten at RG). No way would he have beaten nemesis Nadal had they met in the final.

Nadal owned Federer on outdoor HC back then. He wsa 4-1 at that point, and led 8-2 after the 2014 AO when his terminal decline set in.

Nadal was sooo much better in 2010 I think he would've straight setted Roger there. 2011 is hard to tell. Fed was playing very well through the whole tournament and was one point away from beating Peakovic for a second time at a Slam that year, which is incredible.

So long story short, he had the game to beat Nadal in 4 sets. Whether he would've been up to it mentally, and whether he could get across the finish line in a Slam final against Rafa, especially in 2011 when he lost so many matches from winning positions.. That's a different question. Untestable, therefore... :p

Nadal would have worked that backhand out lol

Btw....just need opinion on the 2011 potential match up. We know Nadal wasn't going to lose in 2010 considering the way he was serving

Federer would have won 4 sets because towards the end of the year Federer was in good touch in both 2010 and in 2011, he won the ATP final matches vs Nadal in both years. Fed even bageled Nadal in the tour finals in 2011.

On top of that both Federer and Djokovic were playing at a higher level than Nadal in 2011, maybe Djoker was a slight above or it was 50-50, there is no way that Nadal could have won vs Roger in 2011 USO if they clashed, problem is Djokovic happened and took the slam.

Fed always gets the benefit of the doubt in these hypothetical matchups despite evidence to the contrary
Well put. Federer will get to enjoy all of his hypothetical achievements once he retires. Those the ones he will get to keep and no one on earth can take them for him.

Yep, but Slams is a different kettle altogether. We all know Federer had the talent, but did he have the guts?

To this day, '17 AO F remains Federer's only non-grass Slam win over Nadal. I don't think Federer would've beaten Nadal at '11. But if they had met at USO anytime in '15-19, the period of Federer's dominance in that rivalry, Federer would've won.

Too bad that during '15-19, they only met twice at majors outside of clay ('17 AO and '19 Wim).

It was not because of the serve given that Nadal was not serving like Pete or something in 2010 it's just that Nadal had his best USO run that year, while Federer was not convincing at all and it would have meant that he would have overachieved by simply being in the final.

Rafa deserves the benefit of the doubt. I just can't trust Fed in that era, too much mental scarring. I know it's not the same thing but Fed had everything going for him on paper for their RG match that year and he totally botched that one too, and that would've been very fresh in his mind by September.

In 2011 the match-up disadvantage was as large as ever. It was bad enough when it was early 20s Nadal against Federer, but now it's post-peak Fed against prime Rafa. The physical and mental advantage had shifted far too much towards the Bull's direction.

Fed was absolutely clinical for most of USO 2011, unpopular opinion but I think he would have blitzed Nadal in that final. His serve + 1 was on fire, he exorcised his Tsonga demons and gave a well-playing Djoko all he could handle. Nadal’s serve was too iffy and he’d have given up too many breaks, sometimes the discrepancy in level is enough to override mental scars and this would have been another example of that IMO.

Logically Fed should win, but he lost most real like matches vs Nadal in that time period.

Nadal won their only other matches on the USO surface (Dubai 06, Cincy 13)

Fed played a better tournament overall than Nadal but the topspin to the backhand being what it is...
Who knows really? I'm not giving this one to Nadal because he played way too poorly in the final. Had never played this poor against Fed in a slam when he beat him.

Nadal would have won. Federer didn't figure out how to beat Nadal on hard court until 2017.

Because he didn't get to play him on a HC that actually suited his game.
I always thought that a HC slam match between them before Wimbledon 2008 would have done wonders for Fed's confidence, especially on the lower bouncing courts in NY.They met after Wimbledon 2008 after the damage was already done.Matches in 2006-2007 would have been perfect :)

Nadal. Federer still hadn't got round to sorting out the whole match up thing. Only took him 13 years lol

Federer played some of his best hard court Tennis in AO 12 - yet he was defeated convincingly by Nadal just few months after USO. Of course surface would matter but I don't think Federer had mental strength to beat Nadal in bo5 back then.

Ned was way better, though.
