Problem with Dinos, is they weren't all alive at the same moment in time, so Tyranasaurus never saw an Allosaur, not alive anyways, and the king predators only lasted a few hundred thousand years before going extinct, then a new species of king dyno "ruled" the world.

That's what I've said. Plenty of GOAT candidates in different moments of a very long strong era.

What do we have today? Bears? Gorillas? Zinedine Zidane?

Joke.

So who rules the waters, salt and fresh?

Microsoft.

Who rules the air?

Fortunately, not Microsoft.

They start using Microsoft in airplanes, I'm not getting in. Simple, really.

Then of course, are we rating overall, pound for pound, one vs one, or species vs species.....
Someone mentioned Anthrax virus, but one on one, it might not win, given one each on a level playing field.
And just what IS a level playing field?

Ha ha, voting as recommended by LeeD for the laugh, since I'm a former Californian I have to go for the bear!!! Oh yeah, slayerofkings, we woman can be fairly lethal, I nearly took out my husband at breakfast this morning (I can only blame it on hormones...)

Haha, thanks to this thread I just spend an hour browsing the internet trying to find out what is and what was the most bad ass animal ever....:)
(or to say it with TTW words: the GOAT)

I've come to the following conclusions:

current:

land:
African elephant – the sheer weight of up to 7,5 tons would probably be too much for anyone to take. For instance a Grizzly is powerful but with less than a 10th of the weight the elephant would just run over it.

Water:
I would say killer whale or blue whale.
The killer whale owns the white shark so that one is off the table. The blue whale is not a hunter but due to it's enormous size (<200tons) killer whales (<6,5tons) apparently don't attack a fully grown one (much less alone, they usually hunt in groups).

air:
Going by bigger means better I suppose it's the bald eagle

All time:

land:
Hard to tell since all these dinosaurs are extinct and many things about how they really looked and behaved we don't know many exaclty.
My first guess was T-Rex, Triceratops (those two actually fought and it seemed like a somewhat even match), Allosaurus or Spinosaurus.
But then there is the Argentinosaurus who might not have been a hunter but can bring up to 100 tons to the table. Hard to imagine how a < 7 ton T-Rex could handle that much power.

water:
Has to be either Megalodon or Predator X. Both have an estimated weigh of ~50 tons (great white <3,5t). Megalodon apparently has the strongest bite in history ever with up to 180kN with Predator X being clear second with ~150kN (for comparison: great white: 18kN, T-Rex 31kN) but again there is lots of uncertainty.
The blue whale might still be heavier but I think that wouldn't be enough against that bite force, agility etc. of these hunters

Air:
Again there is not much material on hypothetical air fight but apparently the biggest ever was the Quetzalcoatlus with up to 250kg and 12m wingspan so that would be my bet. (for comparison: a bald eagle weighs just a lousy ~6kg)

I hope this thread brought a smile to PacLefty....
My take....
Land, AlaskanBrown, at 2,500 lbs. An elephant might get mad, and might tend to trample, but he's not a killer.
Sea, Sperm whale. Hardly a contest.
Air, one on one, and eagle is a formidable foe, if the two are on the same page, but falcons are known to disrupt and scare away eagles 3 times their size with sheer speed and attack from unexpected angles. Kinda like the B-36 bomber was huge, but easily tracked and taken down by one Mig17.

I think the most bad-assed and frightening animal would probably have been the North American Short-faced bear(now extinct). Unlike today's omnivorous bears, this was pure carnivore and had long legs and could run 50–70 kilometres per hour, allowing it to hunt by pursuit. This thing was huge, weighing almost 2,000 lbs. and standing 15 feet upright. They must have made the early Asian immigrants to the continent sh*t their loincloths, imagine having one of those going after you. It's believed it died out about 11,000 years ago due to it's food supply of Pleistocene herbivores being hunted out by the Mesolithic spearthrowers.

During the musth period, elephants become HIGHLY aggressive. That means, get out of the way immediately, no matter if you're a 1,800 lbs Kodiac os a 12,000 lbs rhino. Just get out of the way.

I cant coment on other animals.

But Bear has weapons he uses daily to kill stuff. Gorilla can untie a tshirt to get some food. Bear is larger with claws and teeth and has more aggression. Its not a fair fight really.

Air battle I would probably give an edge to the falcons. In air battle speed and agility are way more valuable than size.

And a sperm whale, despite it's blocky head, can swim at 30+ mph, is the length of a humpback whale, retaining almost another half more mass, is an aggressive carnivore, can dive to depth approaching 8,000 feet.

Gorillas are staggeringly strong, quick, and intelligent. I think very few bears would stand a chance against an adult gorilla.

Gorillas are only 1/4 the size of a AlaskanBrown, which hunters have already killed in the 2,300 lbs range, and not nearly the biggest seen. The story was written in G & Ammo mag, rifle .460 Holland and Holland, slug 400 grams, took 4 shots in the front shoulder to stop, not kill, from across a small valley, 150 yard shots, and needed 4 more .44 Mag rounds in the head to kill.
Most big game hunters consider the .460 H & H to be slightly overkill for rhino, african elephants, hippos and water buffalo.

But a gorilla cannot point into the sky and say "Hey look an Eagle" thus distracting the bear that was up to that point pwning the john west guy.

Gorilla (especially silverback) and it's not even close. Easiest question I've answered all day.

I always wondered what it'd be like to fire off a .600 Nitro Express off a side by side single shot rifle. Maybe like a .50 caliber off a hand held 14lbs rifle. I wouldn't know.
Brother liked to shoot his .338 Weatherby at Sacramento's long range site, 400 yards and a solid huge hill backdrop. I flinched, stuck with 30.06.
Then big slugs don't penetrate, but shatter, so not used in lots of dangerous game hunting.
I remember shooting next to a .460 Weatherby. Wow.

Its gotta be a bit bear all day long.

Its going to be the equivalent of anyone on this forum (gorilla) vs the big show (bear) who is also allowed to use Freddy kruegger gloves.

Slight mismatch me thinks.

Not to hijack the, thread but at my last workplace my mate asked the question who would win in a street fight, the big show or Bruce Lee?

I was big show and he was Bruce lee. That debate never got solved lol.

That's where PARAMETERS come into play.
In a mile by mile field, BruceLee.
In a 8' x 8' x 8'x cubicle, BigShow..
Problem here. Bear is faster than a gorilla, can choose rules of engagement.

Grizzly bear would win, easy. It kills things for a living unlike the gorilla. It would be like a 4.0 vs a 7.0.

A 6'4' 600 lbs silverback Gorilla vs. a 10 feet 2,100 lbs Kodiac bear, and you say it's not even close?

Lol I was about to say the same thing. People don't seem to realize how huge bears are.

Also, It is extremely rare for a silverback Gorilla to even clear 6 ft in height. Polar and Brown Bears can easily found in >8ft heights with weights surpassing 1000 lbs.

Depends what kind of bear and what kind of gorilla. If we are taking the largest of each species, the bear would win easily. Even if the bear and gorillas were of the same size I would favor the bear because of claws and teeth.

OTOH if we are talking a fully armed General Ursus from Planet of the Apes, it would be no contest.

What can be more important in life, than gorilla vs bear?
We don't care about much else, this subject is of vital importance to anyone who lives and breathes, poos and pee's.
We care little about sperm whale vs killer whale. We pass on eagle vs falcon, obsess on BrockLesner vs whomever, so it stands to reason GORILLA vs bear is of the utmost importance.

It’s unbearable seeing polar bear populations dwindle. Is this a coincidence? Makes sense.
Hope unbearable makes the Word of the Day thread.
