I started a similar pole with Surprising results . Sampras of (93-98 ) was the leader with Johnny Mac in 2nd - which I beleive was a quite a popular thread - but all the other board members thought that pole was incomplete ( I agree - my mistake ) . I promised I'd post a pole with user suggested Fav's ( Pro's Of YesterYrs ) & here it is .

Intro from the previous pole :

SO , FED is very much running away with the slams - while roddick slums , nadal loses edge , safin loses temper & gonzo chokes after having a break.

I see no other way than to rely on the medical miracle of CLONING . Say , cloning is perfected in yr 2008 - then who'd You clone to stop FED ?

Keep in mind I have great respect for Roger & do wish him the best so that he could win upto 13 slams ( I'm sorry but I'm a terrible person when it comes to Pete Sampras - I think he (Pete ) is a scaled down version of GOD , so although I love Rog , I'm just not gonna wish him on no#14 . )

Personally I'd clone Sampras of 1999 & that'd be enough.
But for the French - I'd like to clone Agassi as well .

Please Vote Guys . Thank You Guys so very much for posting the nominees in my last thread . If you still feel the pole can be improved - please post .

Also , You Can discuss Your Fav's Strength & Weaknesses beating FEDERER. Why would 'HE' be the choice ?

WoW , No replies ? yet ?

I voted sampras - caz I beleive He had the game ( except on Clay ) to not just beat but DESTROY FED . Yeah , Yeah - I know the counter argument - FED beat Sampras at 2001 WIMBY ( Which was plagued by 2 really bad calls in the 1set tie-break ( which belonged to samp ) & also it was a 5-setter where samp played at his 60% - still lost 7-5 in the Fifth - thats no TRUE Sampras - he was unlucky .)

If I can make that match happen again - Sampras would win that . Ohh , Yeah - sure it wasn't the same FED as we see now - bring in the 96 Sampras against 2006/2007 FED - R.I.P=FED . God have mercy on his soul.

A 70% Sampras is Good Enough to Beat ANY Roger Federer or Nadal or ANY_WHOEVA .......

To Hold down Pete - we needed Agassi ( and vice-versa ), those were great times - it's behind us .

1 minute of silence.......

Yes , Great Tennis is behind us - unless roddicks & youznys & Gonzos turn up the heat a little ........
Sigh.....

the way Pete plays would get to federer after a while, that's why I voted for sampras. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a federer fan to, I just think that he has a weakness that no one can exploit well in today's game, and that is his inability to fend off a good volley-er.

to clone someone to stop federer....i'd definitely have to go with sampras....their games are so similar

On clay, Try cloning Nadal. Oh wait, the real thing has done just fine on clay against Fed. On any surface, I'll go with a clone of Laver.

Give Richard Gasquet two more years...

Richard Gasquet has the strokes, the shot-making ability, the athletic ability and movement and the all-court game to make a run at Federer and the #1 spot. Just give him two or three more years to fully mature. By that time Federer will be in his late 20s and on the decline.

Gasquet Rules

Sampras is so bloody overrated. Federer would dominate him anywhere but grass.

Either Borg or McEnroe is the correct answer. Mac by virtue of his lefty serve and unique style. Borg by virtue of his icy cool mental toughness and consistency.

ok... so this is the thingie. you can't really clone any player from the past to stop Federer. there's been nobody like this guy on a tennis court in this world and everyone knows that, even those who say no know that secretly.
I think Federer can and will be stopped but by someone younger. he's set new standards and there are kids who are growing up watching him and it could be someone currently a pro or someone who's a junior right now, but he will be stopped.

...oh, and I think that Nalbandian is to me the hardest guy to Federer. so if we clone a Nalbandian and we make sure he grows up a little thinner, then we might have the guy to stop Federer.

if you cloned federer to beat himself wouldnt it just be a never ending tie break because neither wud be able to lose!!!6-6(6-6.....7-6....7-7....8-7....8-8.....).Lol another record for fed to break...longest ever tie break!...Unless the real fed was having an off day! Also we might bet confused between the real fed and the cloned fed!!!!

Oh, please. We all know Fed chokes in 5-set matches.

He'd easily choke to Fed.

Gasquet! Gasquet!!

Gasquet is looking good at Indian Wells.

He'll be looking even better in a couple days after he sends Roddick packing!

With the big guns already out in the first round, it's a great opportunity for Richard.

It kinda depends on how fast the Indian Wells courts are, but he should go pretty deep into this event. He could win it.

Fed's loss proves he's not superman. In three years Gasquet will be a very tough proposition for Federer.

I would've gone for the federer clone but then i decided that a clone of Roger Federer would be equal to roger federer so either way roger federer would win or not one of them would win.
