Chileans or Greeks?
The chileans were crazy during Gonzalez's match yesterday (and im not even gonna mention the Gasquet match last year....they threw fireworks from the stands), but the atmosphere in Baghdatis's match impressed me, the greeks really do know how to be loud when it matters
so
what do you think?

The Greeks easily they are the most intense tennis fans I have ever seen, but they aren't that disrespectful either (unlike the French fans they always get out of hand)

Croatians have been getting out of hand the latest years, hope now with the success of their compatriots, they will learn to behave better.

Obviously I'm not impartial in this.Only thing I will say is sometimes,it's good the other audience/commentators don't understand greek.:p

Off topic. I started the club, it was my idea and that's the end of it

There's nothing on topic to discuss my dear.If you doubt the greek-ness of Cypriots all you have to do is make a simple google search.Greek is nationality,Cypriots are greeks who live in the island of Cyprus.Cyprus was invaded only back in 1975 (thanx to Britain a lot too).

oh,don't worry I will give you full credit for the idea.;)

Cypriots may be Greek in some Hellenistic/general sense but they are still Cypriots. Different nation, different nationality.

Perhaps, but I don't think Greece is traditionally associated with Balkan culture. At least not in my book.

balkans are not only slavs.
There are turks, albanians, bulgarians, rumanians!all the good ppl!
hey,We didn't have 2 balkan wars for nothing!!
but yes balkans in popular culture nowadays are more associated with yugoslavs. That's why croatians and slovenians prefer to be referred as central europeans nowadays.

Can I just ad something that I posted in another thread.. Although I am all for being proud of your heritage. And most of the fans do have fun. I want to talk about the trouble that always spoils it each year...

As an Aussie that has a Norwegian Father, and Danish Mother, I get angry at seeing the trouble that is started by kids that are second, third, even fourth generation something, born and raised in Australia. And then when a sporting event comes around. These bored kids don the flags of their forefathers, and decide to start trouble for no apparent reason, because their fathers, uncles, grandfathers have carried on with the grudges from their own homeland, and filled these kids head's with sh1t that they simply can't let go of from the homeland...

What these kids should be doing is draping the Australian flag around them and support their local stars, and not carry on in this manner... Otherwise. I suggest they go back to where they come from, and get an effing clue...

They make the rest of Australia look bad...

As I said. I was born in Australia, and I am a proud Australian. I don't go to events draped in the Norwegian or Danish flags because that is where my parents are from. I am an Aussie, and proud of it!!

I wish these kids would take more pride in their birth place and nation....

Gonzalez definitely. Those chileans are noisy as hell. When Gonzalez plays it feels like a Davis Cup match. Someone should tell them to calm down a little.

a gonzalez vs baghdatis 5-set epic at AO would be awesome, there would probably be deaths in that match....
and Rod Lavr Arena would probably be burnt to the ground

on second thought, it would not be a good idea

I have no problem if they moved to Australia or are simply tourists. But most Greeks in Australia are 2nd 3rd, 4th generation Australians..

They are Australians....

The Chilean fans were very involved.
The Greek fans were very enthusiastic.
The Croation fans were....pretty loud and annoying. The ones who cheered for Berdych.

Not so cut and dry, it is not just about citizenship, it is also about ethnicity and culture.

If you moved to China and had a child would you than consider your child Chinese?

Actually I have two children born in Japan to my Japanese wife.. I expect them to respect both cultures. But when we are in Australia, and we go to a sporting event, they are very proud Aussies. As they are here in Japan when Japan plays..

When Japan plays soccer here in Japan, I encourage them to make their own decision. And not to cause trouble in the process..

So please don't use that as a way to get me on the wrong foot, as I have a lot of practice in this subject...

It is part of heritage and the Greek communities are very close knit regardless of what country they are living in, the heritage will not simply disappear in a few generations.

I don't condone any fans causing trouble, but everyone should have the right to support who they wish regardless of their citizenship or ethnic background. IMO.

I agree, but they don't have the right to start trouble, fights, and set flares off in stadiums...

I never saw Pete Sampras draped in a Greek flag.. He was proud of the country he was born and raised, yet still enjoyed his families culture...

Why can't kids in Australia be the same? They are not Greek. They are Australians with Greek parents, grand parents, great grand parents??

My father is Norwegian, my mother is Danish.. But I was born and raised in Australia, and so I am a proud Aussie!

I don't condone the actions you describe, but a lot of that is political in nature and not really about the sporting event, it is simply used as a venue to deliver a message.

About 200,000 Greeks lost their homes when Cyprus was invaded and it is not easily forgotten even by the second generation.

Some of the chants you will hear there have nothing to do with sports at all,
and if most knew what they were chanting they probably wouldn't like the message very much.

That's lovely.. But keep your phucking problems to yourselves..

What has anything in Cyprus got to do with the Australian Open?

I mean seriously.... Get a life!

Sadly, politics and religious differences find their way into a lot of the places they should not be in this world.

Well take them to Wimbledon, the French or the US Open..

See how long you last......

Don't come to Australia, and sh1t on the very foundation that our forefathers fought to maintain!
