UPDATE: Nadal now has lost four straight masters finals to Djokovic. Does this mean Djokovic's success so far this year has affected Nadal the most, compared to Federer and Murray?

2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome
Djokovic 6-4, 6-4
2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Madrid
Djokovic 7-5, 6-4
2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami
Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)
2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells
Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
****************************************************

Nadal - back to back masters final losses to Djokovic.

2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami
Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)

2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells
Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2

Is this the first time Nadal lost back to back finals to the same opponent?
--------------------------------------------------------------

Federer - 3 consecutive (2 semifinals and 1 final) losses to Djokovic.

2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells
Djokovic, Novak 6-3, 3-6, 6-2

2011 Dubai
Djokovic, Novak 6-3, 6-3

2011 Australian Open
Djokovic, Novak 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-4
--------------------------------------------------------------

Murray - crushed by Djokovic in the AO final.

2011 Australian Open
Djokovic, Novak 6-4, 6-2, 6-3

I am voting for Murray's seeing how after his AO beatdown he has just fallen to pieces.

We cant contribute that 1 loss to the fallout though. I think it was the icing on the cake after two former Grand Slam final beatdowns (at the hands of sir Federer).

I agree, everytime he loses a slam final it's gonna beat him up more and more.

Murray - No doubt. It was slam final, and a chance for Murray to play someone who is not called Federer. That match destroyed Murray more than we know.

Sure Federer and Nadal won't be too thrilled either, but it does not compare to the slam final.

I find it significant that three Federer losses can be compared to two Nadal losses can be compared to one Muurya™ loss.

Does this mean that Nole knocked out Andy with one blow, Rafael with a double blow, but he needed three blows to floor Federer?

Certainly Murray`s loss is more significant.Federer or Nadal lost a couple of big matches but they are up there at the final stages of tournaments while Murray looses to someone like Young or Bogomolov.
Even if they would struggle both Federer and Nadal would never loose those kind of matches.Sure they won`t win every tourney but at least they only loose to top players

Roger for sure, it demonstrates Novak's new "You can not pass!!!!" mentality.

Also Roger has to deal with not being able to beat the 2 top players on HC out doors.

Nadal's 2 losses were just payoff for the raincheck that he gave to Djokovic during last year's US Open final.

Before that match, it almost seemed that Djokovic would finally get his long-awaited title at that grand slam, and revenge for losing the 2008 Olympics

Nadal only narrowly lost to Djokovic in Miami so I don't see that as TOO significant. We'll get a better picture of what's truly going on there when they meet in the clay court finals.

Murray has hit rock bottom since losing the AO final. For him,the only way is up.He went into a similar slump last year before recovering in time for Wimbledon and then won two more Masters beating Fed in both in straight sets.
I'm banking on a similar pattern unfolding this time as well.

Federer's three successive drubbings at Djoko's hands followed by another drubbing by Nadal is probably the most significant as it seems to finally signal the end of his former parity with those two (the dominance went some time ago).Knowing Fed I'm not ruling out another recovery like he showed towards the end of last year when he beat Murray,Djoko and Nadal to take his 5th ATP Year End title but I feel the writing really is on the wall for him now in terms of trying to get back to No.1.So I'm voting for Fed!

Murray's was significant only in terms of him. Significant in terms of showing how useless he is at the highest level. Granted, Djokovic would probably have beaten anybody on that day, but also, Murray probably would have lost to just about anyone.

Nadal's were significant in showing that right now Djokovic truly is the number one guy out there. I don't think making the finals back to back and going the distance on both occasions is a bad result at all for Rafa.

I think Federer's are most significant. Not just these three, but also the one at the US Open. He seems to have been well and truly surpassed by Djokovic. Certainly on hard courts it seems beyond dispute. I would hesitate to say that about Rafa yet simply because I have yet to see him be beaten in a Slam by Nole.

Right now, Fed's. Simply because they denied him important ranking points who led to Fed being out of the top 2.

But time will tell. What if Fed wins Wimbledon, Nadal gets beaten by Nole at the FO and Murray is out of the top ten by the end of the year?

G.O.A.T.
I think Fed's because it does seem to signal that he can't keep up with the Big Two, or that he's lacking in motivation. Especially since he declared himself as getting back to No. 1.

Then, Nadal because I'm sure he hated losing not just once, but twice to Djokovic in a short period of time. He probably isn't taking that it's Nole's best surface into the equation.

Lastly, Andy, he's still young, the youngest of the trio and is just going through some growing pains. There's plenty in history to suggest that he may come through, so he just needs to shore up that mental strength and he'll be good to go.

Probably Federer. He had won three consecutive times against Djokovic prior to the AO. But that AO loss especially, showed that he can't even beat Djokovic in a slam anymore (the US Open was extremely close). It used to be very routine for Fed to take out Novak in slam semis. Then, he couldn't exact even one revenge in Dubai...or in IW.

Federer and Nadal are champions with amazing records with tremendous bounce back strength and there is always another match and another surface. Murray on the other hand has no slam and a finals loss on his best surface and the hopes of a country to answer to and nothing but a detereorating record to look at. See also Roddick, Coria, who were greatly affected to a slam loss. It's tough to get back to winning ways.

Murray by far.

Nadal losing two very close finals to Djokovic on hard courts is hardly something to soul search about yet.

And Federer is way past his prime and continues his expected decline which unless he is truly delusional even he has to know is inevitable to only continue.

So I would say Murray. I wouldnt be surprised if that signals the end of his period of being a top player at all. Although that final Murray played so bad he would have lost to anyone in the top 20 who didnt choke so feels funny to say Djokovic inflicted anything in a way (though by contrast Djokovic played so well that Murray probably would have lost even playing at 100%).

Clearly Murray.

Murray is the guy pretty much everyone has been waiting to make a breakthrough since 2008. He's only been consistent at Wimbledon and the Australian Open since then. But after that Australian Open loss, he's been losing to literally EVERYONE; 3 straight opening round losses---2 to people ranked outside the top 100. When was the last time a top 5 player performed this poorly?

If Murray crashes out at Wimbledon then this slump might turn out to be something that has torched his career. Instead of there being 4 major contenders at slams, there are only 3 right now.

He might as well be injured. Murray is on standby.

I'd put Nadal 2nd. Djokovic has clearly asserted himself as the one to beat right now.....and that title most recently belonged to Nadal. And with Djoker's eye on the top spot, Nadal has got to be a little nervous going into the clay season. Yes, the clay tournaments are his homes away from home but Djoker is no slouch on the dirt either.

What has to be a little unsettling for Nadal is that he has a MASSIVE amount of points to defend. He won everything in sight and has to do it all over again.

A Nadal-Djokovic battle on clay is the most anticipated match-up this season. As we've seen in the last two finals, Nadal isn't as mentally tough as we thought he was.....and Djoker will pounce at the slightest bit of hesitation. And if Djokovic beats Nadal on clay, the turning point will have officially begun.

Federer's career has been on the downswing since winning the Australian Open last year. He's been losing more often and now and is being beaten by the top guys more regularly. He's still going to win tournaments and maybe another slam but his losses don't cause the same reverberations that they used to; they're almost expected these days.

Ok first, what else is new? He's had to do that EVERY YEAR, except losing the French in 09. Nothing new here at all. He only won 1 more clay match last year than he usually does. (Madrid final)

2. Are you kidding me? What does his "mental toughness" have to do with losing in a 3rd set tiebreak where he was simply outhit?

He double faulted in a deciding set tiebreaker. THAT'S the mental toughness I'm talking about.

Djokovic had ZERO.

We will realy find out once clay starts, if Roger loses to Novak there also. Then he has two players that he may not be able to win against no matter what.

I think Murray´s loss against Nole.
I mean you seriously need to have some huge mental issues after that loss if you loose against Donald Young and journeyman Bogomolov in straight sets.
There´s no BIG 4 anymore, until Delpo steps up and takes the spot again.

Definitely Nadal. He's the #1 player in his prime, and lost 2 matches on his best surface. Next is Murray, losing to Nole means it will be even tougher for him to win his FIRST slam. Roger is 6 yrs older Nole, past his prime, has accomplished everything a player can dream of.

I'd say Murray (before the clay season), but now (after 4 straight loses, 2 of them on clay) it is definitely Nadal.

Roger 100%, he lost to Novak, Nadal and lost out even earlier to Melzer and then Gasquet.

I am thinking; is this the end of Federer? Is this how it is all going to end for him?

I hope not!

I would say Federer would be the least significant. He's approaching the twilight of his career so it's to be expected that the next generation will start to dominate. He's never had a good run against Nadal and both Murray and Djokovic have been able to get the best of him even before their current forms.

The most significant would probably be Nadal because for the longest time he's been chasing Federer and now that he's overtaken him Djokovic is about to quickly usurp him.

The fact that Nadal's lost to Djokovic four times this year already (and Nadal seems to be without an answer) could be quite damaging.

suprise poll results

Murray losses in major finals has been to players higher ranked and to favorites to win the match.

Federer losses has been only the natural inevitability

King of clay losing 2 strght to someone who has never won on clay is less significant?...It's not only significant it signaled a major powershift in tennis ..voters here dont know what they are tlking about

I think now things are a little different than what I thought it was after Miami.

Back then I thought Murray, because he lost a non-Fed fina pretty badly, and then just dropped off the Earth with terrible performances on the US spring hard courts. But it looks like he has found good form again on clay of all surfaces, he pushed Nadal hard at MC and gave Djoker the toughest clay court fight of this year no doubt about it. He is finding form, and I think he will come bck strong.

Federer is where I kind of expected him to be. His clay season was so-so, but did not have to play Djoker. Sure, being number three means he plays Nadal more earlier but when you are nearly 30, and have done it all, you have to put things into perspective. A great career, but players in their prime should be beating him often now.

I think Nadal is now the one who is heavily hit by the rise of the Djoker. NO ONE saw this coming at the start of the season, and he has grabbed Nadal by the jugular with both hands, and relentlessly pursed him from one side of the US to the other, and then all the way across to clay courts. Novak's convincing wins in Madrid and Rome signalled a big turn in tennis, the clay king is meeting someone who refuses to bow to him, and is taking his scalp as a trophy a little too much this past few weeks. Nadal in his prime is under attack by a ruthless opponent, who it seems relishes Nadal's game, and is enjoying beating Nadal. It was close on the hard courts, but those wins on the clay are certainly a cause for concern for Nadal. Nadal probably still will win RG, but his reign at the top is under severe threat, and Nole does not look like he will stop until he does it. So my answer now is Nadal.

A terrible knock for Nadal: IW and Miami were bad but it was HC, so the hope was still there. The Madrid and Rome defeats spell doom for Rafael. His confidence was shattered on Campo Centrale. After many years of pushing opponents around he now finds himself being bullied on court, reverting to moonballing and desperate slicing at inopportune moments. May he recover, poor lad.

For Federer... the final nail in the coffin: his regaining the number one spot seems more a remote prospect than ever.

For Murray: a temporary setback, but not much of a problem. Murray is on his way up, unlike Federer and Nadal.
