Thiem : 2 F and 2 SF at RG, 0 Masters titles.
Zverev : 2 QF at RG, 3 Masters titles.

Discuss/Disgust.

Murray made 11 grand slam finals yet people still say he is comparable to Wawrinka because they won the same ammount. Titles are what matter. Zverev is the answer.

Based on what they've been doing recently, I'd put my money more on Zverev than Thiem to beat Nadal at RG. That should be all that matters, but on paper, you'd have to think Thiem is the bigger threat, seeing that he can actually get through Djokovic to face Nadal if he lands on that side of the bracket. I don't even know how the seeds work this year. Anyways, this is a good question, because it is hard to answer. I think you'd have to say Zverev is more accomplished, but Thiem the bigger threat at RG. Except, with Thiem's recent slump, I'd take Zverev for both of those scenarios. Dang, I already put down Thiem. Hopefully I can change my answer.

Edit: I changed my answer to Zverev

Not only has Zverev not made it past QFs at Roland Garros, he's 0-6 in sets in his two QF matches there. I can't put somebody who's never won a set after the 4th round at the biggest clay tournament ahead of somebody who's been to SFs or better 4 times in 5 years (losing to Nadal or Djokovic each time).

But tbh, even with just one SF appearance at Roland Garros (and a reasonable performance in that match) I'd probably put him ahead of Thiem, given the gap in M1000s.

Like Thiem more but at this point Zverev has accomplished more on clay than Thiem. Thiem has got to win RG if he wants to be the more accomplished clay court player of the two.

Nah. It's just that Stan's Slam titles are more impressive.
Peak Djokovic/peak Nadal
Peak Federer/Peak Djokovic
Peak Nishikori/drunk Djokovic

vs

Peak Djokovic
Prime Djokovic
Peak Raonic

Wawrinka slightly more impressive but he had the worse career as he wasn’t consistent.

Fixed.

Thiem had potential once upon a time.

That time is past. Among those his age and younger, he's barely a top ten threat. Just a coulda been playing out the string.

Zed also has a Rome title.

And well, not Zed's problem Thiem can't win in Madrid.

I forgot about Rome. Oh yes beat Djokovic. In 2017. Still I think Thiem is more of a pedigree on Clay. The RG finals and his wins over Nadal.

The clay is proper, it is still clay under their feet. You speak about the altitude and thinner air.

It will only be proper clay for me when Rublev wins on it because bias. Zed winning on it makes it unproper Clay.

All of Nadal's wins are just overrated then it seems, since he has zero wins over the clay GOAT. :D

Tut! You make a basic mistake of underestimating the Nadal's ability to win in a way that is impossible for any other mortal. Just as, as @vive le beau jeu ! pointed out recently, an event not being held is no reason why Nadal can't win it, so Nadal not being able to play himself is no reason why he cannot beat himself. Nadal thus has an infinite number of wins against the clay GOAT.

In many (if not most) ways, being worse at clay makes you the better tennis player and the better person

Unfortunately for both of them they seem to have missed the boat and take the surface with a modicum of seriousness which could be a sign of mental problems

Based on current form, Zverev. Based on overall form, Thiem. I still think Thiem will recover from his slump before RG.

Clay-court tennis is not real tennis. Zverev's win yesterday and Tsitsi's Monte Carlo title confirms that.

Hard not to go with Zverev even though I greatly prefer Thiem. The young German has 3 Masters titles on clay and has beaten every top player on clay en route to a big title

Thiem is obviously much better at RG and I think he’s the “better” clay courter but it’s getting harder to argue that when the biggest title he’s won on clay is still a 500 at Barcelona in 2019.

Not to mention, Thiem is 4 years older than Zverev

People are forgetting one important thing RG final is better than master win, you have to win 6 best of five matches. Thiem has two finals
But yeah Thiem not winning master on clay is really surprising

Thiem has a higher game peak on clay, but Zverev has a better career. The question of thread is not who is a better clay courter, but who is more successful and that is Sascha. Clay Masters titles > lost RG finals.

highly trained or skilled in a particular activity.
"an accomplished pianist" - Thiem

achieve or complete successfully.
"the planes accomplished their mission" - Zverev

Close but I'm going with Thiem. He still has 10 clay titles to Zverev's 6, along with 2 RG finals and 2 SFs. He doesn't have a clay Masters which is shocking tbh but has multiple victories over Djokovic and Nadal, and beat them at least 3 times each on clay.

But Zverev has beaten Djokovic, Nadal and Thiem x 2 for all three of his masters titles. He won Madrid in 2018 without even facing a break point. I mean the fact that Thiem lost to Zverev twice in masters matches after there was no Nadal left in the draw is a telling stat.

His 2018 Madrid run was very very impressive, no doubt. I do think Thiem should have done better in that 2018 final. Right now, he's struggling so I don't weigh this past loss as highly but hard for me to overlook that Thiem has been better at the biggest clay tournament though and has taken Djokovic and Nadal to the cleaner 7 times on clay. I give him the slight edge.
