Federer. His body and mental focus are both holding up well.

Can't say the same for Serena.
While I can’t defend her choke against Pliskova , her three slam losses since her pregnancy return have been to all former #1s or slam champ opponents but the same can’t be said for Federer losing to Anderson at Wimbledon in the QF, Millman in the 4R of the USO and Tsitsipas in the 4R of the Aus Open...

Bo3 vs Bo5 for 37 year olds ROFLMAO. Might as well let IW/Miami count for Fed then

If Fed was in Serenas physical shape relative to the field hed be rolling out of the top 20 by now

Gotta give this one to Serena.

While Fed is looking good in Miami this week while Serena retired, she plays differently at slams. Slam final, slam final, slam QF in her last three. Fed has been slam QF, slam 4R, slam 4R.

He now has to fight an in form Nadal and Djokovic for his slams unlike two years ago. Serena has some serious competition but nothing like ATG’s Nadal and Novak.

Probably Serena but shes been having a habit of getting found out ag the latter stages of events so maybe shes done. Who knows. Probably still got a slam or 2 in her though

Dont think any of them will but id go with Fed. If Djoker should slip he is still at least 50/50 vs anyone at 3/4 surfaces.

Federer

1. He is a lot more fit than Serena. Which provides him with a top 4 ranking, the same cant be said for Willams
2. He has more advantage over the field and only one roadblock in Djokovic. Serena reached two finals in 2017 but both of those were extremely open draws with first timers in the SF + she was completely outplayed by Kerber, Osaka.
3. Federer is motivated by the joy for the game, Serena is motivated by glory and ego

Serena has played very good tennis since her return from childbirth, especially in the majors. She was very, very good at Indian Wells until the sickness. Problem is she's more mentally fragile than she used to be and isn't as tough in the latter rounds of majors as she once was. Still, she's focused and working hard and that's usually enough to get her into the winner's circle eventually. Federer has a better chance of winning another major than I thought at the beginning of the year, but it's still less likely than Serena winning again.

You actually believe this and think it makes a difference. Amazing.

Probably Serena. She's been more consistent at the slams of late than Federer plus she has much weaker competition. Fed will still have to contend with a decent playing Djokovic and Nadal.

There's a good chance that neither of them wins a slam but I suspect that if it's going to be one of them, it's Serena

I believe it makes. When you play for mostly joy, its more easily to give your best and its less likely the fear of losing to block your game. Perfect example for Serena, the Osaka match. She met an opponent who clearly wouldnt fold and for whom she needed to raise her game, her energy went totally allow, blaming the umpire and not focusing on improving.
Also when you love the game - practice, December camps are easier and not something you are forced to do. Serena clearly doesnt want to put the work anymore and this is the reason she is often unfit, plays small amount of tournaments and retires so often.
So bottom line, the energy that drives Federer is to be the best version of himself. The energy that drives Serena is to be the best player out there. Tell me, which would last longer ?

Stupid point.

She was ranked in like the 400's around this time last year. Federer wasn't. She's now in the top 10.

4R, F, F, QF vs NA, QF, 4R, 4R in the past 4 slam's. Do the maths.

Serena, for the reason(s) already stated by many in this thread. She simply has it much easier with the BO3 format and no Nadal/Djokovic equivalents.

You sure you know how math works? Not to mention that Serena received protected ranking at Wimbledon while she had to be unseeded. Doesnt change the fact that being top 4 gives you better draws in the long run than being number 10 .. by a lot.

Protected ranking and what was she ranked as? 1 like Federer?:-D

The point was he was in the same position a year ago, she wasn't and worked her way up. Won't take long for her to hit top 5.

4R, F, F, QF still better than NA, QF, 4R, 4R.

Why? Because of the depth and strength of the field is weaker in the WTA ?

Probably. Also 5 set matches tougher than 3 for older players. Serena still bullies quite a few players on tour while Fed is stumbling against decent players at slams these days.

Before AO 17 - Nadal was 1st, 3rd, DNP, 4th in Majors. Did those results somehow suggest what would come after that.
Serena reached the Wimbledon final meeting just one seeded player, Goerges at number 13. At Us Open she met one top 10 player, number 8 Pliskova. After that she had Sevastova in the SF. Those type of draws would happen very rarely. IF Serena dont improve her ranking , she would have to beat three top 8 players to win a Major.

I would vote for Serena Williams.
With the WTA, non Serena Williams players seem to be less consitent and lose more often than Nadal/Djokovic types.

I only set my clocks ahead an hour. Apparently I was supposed to move them up an entire week ;)

Serena by a country mile. I would probably change my answer if the WTA switched to a best of 5 setup, which makes a huge difference at age 37.

Wow a thread discussing Serena without the usual trash responses/posters (so far). I'll have to remember to include Fed in the title next time I make a thread about Serena on this site!

No real competition in the WTA

No upgraded difficulty in slams

It should be a 100% to Serena yet its not

Having competition or not, you can't compete if you aren't fit to play. Serena is out of shape and can't finish matches in a Premier events.
